Brit tourist, 25, faces jail in Thailand after cops find more than 1kg of cocaine worth £68,000 in his Bangkok hotel room

A 25-year-old British tourist is facing prison in Thailand after he was allegedly caught with more than a kilogram of cocaine worth £68,000 in his hotel room in Bangkok. Thai narcotics officers arrested the man in a sting operation after tracing a suspicious parcel that had been sent into the country through international mail. Authorities say the Brit had arranged for the drugs to be delivered to a luxury condominium in the heart of the capital. Staff at the property reportedly refused to accept the delivery because of an incomplete address, prompting the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB) to step in. When the suspect later arrived to collect the package, undercover officers immediately moved in and arrested him. A search of his room uncovered an additional quantity of marijuana, police said. Police Lieutenant Colonel Suriya Lekathikan, Secretary-General of the ONCB, said: 'Right now, our officers are conducting an in-depth investigation into this drug trafficking network involving foreign nationals. 'For this reason, we are not able to disclose the suspect's personal information or further details at this stage. 'Anyone else connected to him, who has been involved in the smuggling network, should be fearful. We are closing in on them.' The seized drugs are believed to have been destined for tourists and expats in Bangkok's party venues and bars. In a separate statement, the ONCB said: 'This cocaine seizure demonstrates the efforts of transnational networks to import club drugs, which are highly potent and popular in entertainment venues, into the country. 'These drugs include ecstasy, happy water, ketamine (K), Five-Five, and even laughing gas. All of these are illegal and deadly. 'All agencies have been instructed to strictly monitor and suppress these drugs to protect our society and youth from all forms of drug threats.' The Briton has been charged with importing Category II narcotics with the intent to sell. Under Thai law, cocaine falls into this category, and offenders can face decades behind bars or even life imprisonment depending on the quantity involved. The arrest comes just weeks after another British tourist, George Wilson, 23, was detained for allegedly attempting to smuggle more than nine kilograms of crystal meth hidden in foil tea bags out of Bangkok. Wilson was arrested at the Le Fenix Hotel, located in one of the city's red-light districts, after police traced the drugs to a British courier known as 'Snoopy.' He now faces the death penalty for trafficking Category I substances, which under Thai law include heroin, methamphetamine, and other synthetic drugs.
