Construction worker dies after falling into a massive 50ft hole in New York's Hudson Yards
A New York City construction worker died after falling into a 50-foot hole in Manhattan's Hudson Yards neighborhood.
The male employee was working at 605 W 30th Street around 9am when he fell from five stories into a hole from the ground floor, ABC 7 reported.
'It was a foundation wall that was poured yesterday. We don’t know how or why he fell,' FDNY Battalion Chief, Anthony Romano said, according to Gothamist.
'The construction worker was working approximately 50 feet up on the northern wall.'
The man, who worked for the New York Concrete Corporation, was rescued from the hole and was taken to the hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced dead.
Romano told Gothamist that the worker wasn't breathing and had no pulse when he was pulled out of the hole.
Emergency crews attempted to perform CPR while inside the hole before hoisting his body up in a basket, the outlet reported.
The worker, who was not identified, was working on the Gateway Tunnel project, which is a construction of nine miles of passenger rail tunnels in the Hudson River, connecting the Big Apple to New Jersey.
The $16.1billion project is also rehabilitating the existing 115-year-old tunnel, which has been causing chronic delays for thousands of daily riders.
The employee was working on the third section of the Hudson Yards Concrete Casing, which will link Penn Station to the new rail lines, The Daily News reported.
The project, which is key for Amtrak, is expected to be completed by 2035.
All work has been halted on the project while the investigation continues.
'The Gateway Development Commission, Amtrak, and Related Companies extend our profound condolences to the family of the worker,' a joint statement said.
'Our thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.'
Another worker was injured in June at the site. They were hit by heavy machinery while inside the hole.
President Donald Trump has threatened to suspend $18billion in federal funding to the Gateway Tunnel and Second Avenue Subway extension last week.
The threats came as the Republicans continues to attack Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, of New York, amid the government shutdown fight.
'If Donald Trump thinks he can use New Yorkers, New Jerseyites, commuters, small businesses, union construction workers and the first responders as political pawns, it will backfire on him spectacularly,' the congressman said earlier this month.
The Gateway Tunnel supports 11,000 construction jobs and is boosting $4.5billion in economic activity, The New York Times reported.
The project is vital for thousands of commuters each day, as many New Yorkers and those who commute into the city for work rely on the transit system.
President Trump's threats have also spilled into New Jersey politics as governor hopefuls Jack Ciattarelli and Mikie Sherrill have vowed to take on the Trump Administration over the decision.
