Cycling hero hands over charity funds after solo summer challenge across Ireland

Aran, the 17-year-old student from Jesús Pobre who cycled 2,500 kilometres along Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way this summer, has now officially handed over the funds he raised to the Lynwen Cancer Care Nurses. In an emotional moment at Cancer Care Javea’s charity shop, Aran presented a cheque for €11,005, the total raised through donations and sponsorships, directly supporting the nursing team who provide vital care and equipment to cancer patients on the Costa Blanca. Aran dedicated his entire summer to the challenge, cycling from one end of Ireland’s rugged Atlantic coast to the other. Battling strong winds, relentless rain and steep coastal climbs, he camped in remote areas and repaired his bike along the route—funding the entire journey himself. What began as a modest goal of €5,000 grew far beyond expectations, with Aran raising €7,530 for Cancer Care Javea. In total, combining online donations and sponsorships, his efforts generated €11,005 to help provide equipment and support for patients battling cancer on the Costa Blanca. “This ride is my way of turning something painful into something positive,” Aran told Euro Weekly News. “I want to give back to the people who helped my family when we needed it most.” A journey fuelled by community spirit Aran documented his adventure with video updates that showed not only the breathtaking coastal scenery, but also the physical and emotional highs and lows of long-distance cycling. His determination and genuine love of the outdoors made each update eagerly anticipated by supporters following his journey online. Along the way, local Irish residents offered camping space, spare beds, meals and encouragement—demonstrating true Irish hospitality. A cause close to the heart Cancer has directly affected Aran’s family, making this challenge deeply personal. Back home in Spain, he volunteers with Cancer Care Javea, helping at events and supporting the work of the Lynwen Cancer Care Nurses—a team that previously provided equipment and emotional support to his own grandmother. More than twenty local businesses and individuals became “Pedal Partners”, contributing to the fundraising and cheering him on every kilometre. A hero’s welcome in Jesús Pobre On Monday September 2, Aran was welcomed back during the Jesús Pobre youth fiesta with music, banners reading “Welcome home, Aran”, Irish food and a lively crowd of friends and supporters. The evening included a raffle of Aran’s bicycle, boosting the fundraising total even further. Aran’s achievement represents not only physical endurance, but also generosity of spirit. His courage and commitment have made a tangible impact on cancer patients in the community—and inspired others to get involved.
