FIA investigates Ex-FBR Chief Shabbar Zaidi Over Rs16 Billion Refund Controversy

KARACHI – Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) filed a case against former Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) Chairman Shabbar Zaidi over allegations of misuse of authority. According to FIA’s Anti-Corruption Circle, Zaidi allegedly unlawfully released Rs16 billion to banks and companies that were his clients during his tenure from May 10, 2019, to January 6, 2020. The case states that he, along with other officials, misused his position by issuing unauthorized refunds to these companies. The investigation will be led by Assistant Director Nand Lal. Zaidi is a Pakistani chartered accountant and former Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (2019–2020). He has held leadership roles in the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Pakistan and the South Asian Federation of Accountants, and served as a partner at PwC Pakistan. He also authored books on Pakistan’s economy and governance and is actively involved in non-profit and educational initiatives, including SIUT and KSBL. He currently appears as an economic analyst on Pakistani television.
