How will Storm Benjamin affect Scotland as 70mph winds expected down south?

The second storm of the year, Storm Benjamin, has been officially named, the Met Office has announced. But while several yellow wind and rain warnings are in place across much of England today, Scots are also to face some wintery weather, if less severe. Today, Thursday, October 23, sees three yellow warnings for wind and rain across the south of the UK , and dangerous gusts of 70mph are also expected on coastal areas. But how will us Scots fare as Storm Benjamin batters the south? Met Office Meteorologist Clare Nasir says: "We do have weather warnings this morning across much of the southern half of the UK, all courtesy of a deep area of low pressure which is extending across these parts. Now this is Storm Benjamin, being named yesterday [October 22] by the French Met Service, because most of the impacts will be across the near continent ." England is to see heavy 'torrential bursts of rain', high waves and severe gusts, with the public being urged to take care while driving and travelling today. However, no warnings are in place for us Scots as of yet, so it looks like we will be avoiding the worst of the storm at first. But while some of us are in for a dry morning, Benjamin's downpours will catch up to us eventually. The weather expert says: "If you are stepping out first thing [on Thursday], it's drier across the North West Highlands. "A little showery rain here and there across mainland Scotland , but some dry weather, a bit chilly in places." But Scotland isn't fully in the clear, as this afternoon is to see Benjamin bring showers to the east, and later, a separate system of rain will soak the west as well. Clare adds: "Showers file in across the northeast of England, much of eastern Scotland seeing those showers. "Some fine weather actually around lunchtime for Northern Ireland and western parts of Scotland, but an area of low pressure will sink southwards, and that means the winds will pick up across Northern Ireland and western Scotland, and you'll see a rash of showers." Clare explains that the rain 'will eventually clear eastwards, but that it will be a slow process.' While the worst of the storm will be felt in southern areas this morning, tomorrow, Friday October 24 will see Benjamin drift north and travel over the North Sea on the east side of the UK, drenching Scotland again as it does so. The expert says: "The rain returns across eastern counties of Scotland [tomorrow]." And further systems of showers will fall across the west tomorrow as well. Clare adds: "We lose the strength of the wind across England and Wales, but showers will follow on Friday, particularly across the west, and that wind will be coming in from a northerly direction, so very cold across the north as well as the west of Scotland, delivering those showers. "Some wet weather to end the day across eastern Scotland that will then sink down towards northern England."
