We worked so hard to get back into the game and then conceded a very sloppy second goal. That’s the disappointing part. If you look at the game overall we were far too rushed, making rash decisions at times, and we were too open when we lost the ball.
We still created many opportunities to score and win the game. But the reality is that we lost. It’s an interesting time now and we have to stick together – not only us as players, but together with our fans and everyone who wants us to win.
[What do Liverpool need to do to get back on track?] First and foremost stay humble, keep working and try to keep your confidence as high as possible. It’s about staying very calm. We’re coming off a season when everything was positive and we became champions; when things get tough it’s important to keep that mentality of being there for each other. It’s still a long season.
It’s easy to get dragged into a negative spiral. You have to put things in perspective – we’re in October. But the reality is we want to turn it round asap.

It’s been a long time coming, picking up three points at this ground. It’s the old cliche – ‘it’s only three points’ – but it’s definitely not: it means a lot more than that to the club, to the fans and to the boys. It’s for the fans, I hope they have a great night tonight.
[Is Anfield the best place to win for a Man Utd player?] Yeah definitely, without a doubt. We saw the build-up all week: Juan Mata’s goals (in 2015), Wayne’s winning goal (Rooney, in 2016) and I’m sure in a few years they’ll be looking back at my header.
Listen, football’s all about creating memories. We’ll all go home happy but we won’t get carried away – we’re not in a position to get carried away. We need to use this motivation to reach the levels they’ve reached in recent years, because that’s where this club should be at.
The lads have gotta remain calm-headed and make sure we’re ready for Brighton next week. We showed a lot of fight and spirit – we can be better with the ball, we know that – and we need to show that in every game.

Eventually Amad flicked an inviting pass back towards Fernandes, who was charging onto the scene as if world peace depended on it. Fernandes slammed a first-time shot from 15 yards that clipped the outside of the post and flew wide. For a player of his quality, that’s a glorious chance.

A thrilling break from Liverpool almost leads to the equaliser. Szoboszlai feeds a pass into the centre circle for the unmarked Salah, who turns and curls an excellent pass to Gakpo in the inside-left channel. Gakpo veers to the right, uses the last United defender as a screen and flashes a curling shot towards goal from 20 yards. It beats Lammens and bounces off the face of the right-hand post. That would have been a lovely goal.

In our club the next game is always the most important, the one that can change the mindset of everyone. But if we think one game is important than another [because it’s Liverpool], that is a big mistake.

Preamble
Most of the time, rivalries peak when the two parties are fighting for the biggest prizes. Think Coe and Ovett, Benn and Eubank, Corrigan and Usborne. But their battles can be equally compelling when one or both are struggling and the stakes are not as high; ask anybody who watched, for example, the unforgettable 3-3 draw between a shambolic Liverpool and a rampant Manchester United at Anfield in January 1994.
The current, contrasting struggles of Liverpool and Manchester United have been the main source of fascination – and hype – ahead of today’s game. Liverpool are a) the defending champions and b) on a run of three straight defeats. United are a) in the bottom half of the table again and b) playing slightly better than their results would suggest.
This fixture could be the perfect palate cleanser for Liverpool and especially Mo Salah, who has a spectacular record against United. But United will take heart from last season’s 2-2 draw, when they produced their best performance under Ruben Amorim; today they’re hoping to win consecutive league games under him for the first time. A minor landmark, sure, but every developing side needs those.
One thing’s for sure: whatever the result, there will be narrative.
