Mets Must Make $88 Million Franchise-Altering Decision In Free Agency

The New York Mets fell short of the postseason this year, and they’re set to watch a few key players head into free agency this winter. Pete Alonso and Edwin Diaz are among the Mets players who could leave town this offseason. Both are projected to land big contracts, but Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently projected Diaz would sign a massive four-year, $88 million deal, which is almost unheard of for relief pitchers. Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently urged the Mets to do everything in their power to reunite with Diaz this winter. (Photo by Al Bello/Getty Images) “Bit of a toss-up between Díaz and Pete Alonso, and you can easily make the case that they ought to prioritize the first baseman simply because there are so many more closers available this winter,” Miller wrote. “Conversely, the Mets would still have a formidable lineup even without the Polar Bear, while their bullpen situation is looking all sorts of dire if you remove Díaz from the equation. (For what it’s worth, Díaz hasn’t yet officially opted out of the two years left on his deal, so it’s still possible they won’t even need to re-sign him. But we all assume he’s going to opt out.)” Diaz is likely going to land one of the biggest contracts in relief pitcher history, and the Mets are one of the only teams that can afford it. But they’re going to need to beat out teams like the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Dodgers in this free agency sweepstakes. The Mets can’t afford to lose their star closer.
