New municipal animal shelter in Torrevieja set to open in the first few months of 2026

Torrevieja is preparing to welcome a state-of-the-art municipal animal shelter, set to open in the first quarter of 2026, the City Council has confirmed. The project carries a municipal investment of €1,412,330 (VAT included) and is being built by Construcciones Urdecon S.A. The construction is already around 40% complete, allowing for the relocation of all animals from the current facility into the newly completed habitats. There will be thirty-six for dogs, twenty for cats, and eight isolation units. There will be a capacity for more than thirty-five dogs and one hundred and sixty cats. There will also be a main building with a veterinary clinic, operating room, reception, office space, meeting rooms, storage, as well as a laundry room for the animals. Modern Operations, Year-Round Care Once it’s officially open, the shelter will operate 365 days a year, offering 24-hour animal care, making it extremely convenient for every pet owner. The city is also creating a €642,136 contract for animal care services over the next two years, covering feeding, hygiene, and veterinary needs. Safety, Comfort & Long-Term Commitment City officials are currently obtaining authorisations for asbestos removal in the old kennels to allow for their demolition and pave the way for the new building. Meanwhile, procurement is underway for medical equipment and furniture for the new facility. Mayor Eduardo Dolón has emphasized the importance of modern, pleasant, and safe facilities to ensure the welfare of all animals housed there. He also highlighted the large-scale financial commitment – nearly €2 million including construction and service contracts.
