Playback singer Chinmayi recognised as ‘Icon of the Month’

“Chennai is home, but sometimes, home is where you get hurt as much as you are loved. The place has brought me to a mentally equanimous state,” said playback singer Chinmayi Sripada on receiving the ‘Icon of the Month’ from Super Chennai, a not-for-profit initiative here on Friday. “We have systematically failed to bring some of our greatest achievements to the fore. Villupattu is our own, but it is rarely celebrated. The same goes for several folk art, music and dance forms, which we need to celebrate as much as the annual Carnatic music season,” she said regarding the things that Chennaiites need to celebrate more. ‘Some not recognised’ “People from certain strata of society are not being given the recognition or sponsorship they deserve, to put our city on the map, and that is a shame on us. There are so many kabaddi players like Karthika out there, who need to be brought to the front. Moreover, many athletes like Santhi Soundarajan have been denied what they rightfully deserve,” she said. She added: “My biggest wish is to see the end of manual scavenging, and let’s begin it with our city.” Ms. Chinmayi also said that she was grateful for the support of the Gen Z demographic of Chennai. “The way they support me through reels, content, comments, it means a lot. They follow their heart and try to be authentic.” ‘Global impact’ Navin Kumar of Super Chennai said that this particular initiative was to tell the world that people from Chennai have consistently made a mark on the global front.
