Why would the Flames pursue Zamula?
Zamula, 25, played his junior hockey career with the Calgary Hitmen of the WHL. He would enter the NHL undrafted, as the Flyers would take a chance on him. Zamula has since recorded 40 points in 158 career NHL games. Last season, he played 63 games with the Flyers, notching 15 points.
As stated in Di Marco’s tweet, the Flames may see Zamula as a player who can help strengthen their mediocre defensive core. If the team moves out a player like Miromanov or Bean, that’s where I can see a potential trade making sense on their end.
Flames beat reporter Wes Gilbertson confirmed Di Marco’s tweet indicating the team’s interest in a left-shot defenceman. With that being said, is it a move that’s really necessary? Unless the Flames are moving out players, it wouldn’t make sense to trade assets for a player like Zamula at this stage. Not to mention Zamula isn’t even slotted as a top-four defender with the Flyers currently. So trading for another bottom-pair defenceman would be redundant, unless the team believes he can tackle a bigger role. Either way, the Flames have been on the hunt for a left-shot defenceman ever since the offseason, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that they’re currently weighing their options.
