West Lothian locals to get new £3m community centre in village

The village of Stoneyburn is to get a new community centre. Councillors on West Lothian’s Executive backed a £3m plan to demolish the existing building and build a new centre as the best value option. Council leader Lawrence Fitzpatrick called it “marvellous news.” The village community education centre was closed in January 2024 after RAAC roofing planks in the building were found to have deteriorated. Since the centre has been closed the majority of community groups and existing users, which utilised the building, have been able to find temporary alternative accommodation within the village. Although some of the large-scale community events have had to stop due to lack of suitable space. In a report to the Executive David Baird the council’s Property Services Manager said demolition and replacement was considered the best option: “The exact replacement design is still to be completed but concept layout plans have been discussed with the Management Committee. “ The designs would provide a large hall capable of hosting community events and be suitable to accommodate ball sports for youth groups. Both designs include an on-site kitchen and a further smaller room for small groups to meet alongside other ancillary accommodation. Local Councillor Craig Meek: “I welcome this report. It is fantastic news for the community of Stoneyburn and it’s a great example of the commitment that this council has to its communities and also to safeguard its community centres. "I want to say a huge thank you to officers for pulling it together and the work you have done so far in terms of liaising with the current management committee and keeping local members up to date. I look forward to seeing it progress.” For the SNP councillor Pauline Stafford said: “ It’s really positive that there’s a solution been found, hopefully so quickly for Stoneyburn. I think supporting community facilities is one of the best ways we have of addressing inequality so I look forward to seeing it come forward.” Councillor Fitzpatrick said “It is marvellous news for Stoneyburn. Can I say it has been really dedicated, in-depth work by our officers, and I think we should thank them so much.” Don't miss the latest news from the West Lothian Courier.
