Wike drops bombshell on becoming Nnamdi Kanu's witness

President Bola Tinubu's Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, has expressed his readiness to stand as a witness in Nnamdi Kanu's terrorism trialHowever, the minister, in an interview on Friday, October 24, gave a condition before he could appear as a witness in the ongoing trialNnamdi Kanu has earlier mentioned Wike, Minister of Works David Umahi, two APC governors and several others as his witnesses in the terrorism charges against him Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has responded to the call to appear as a witness in the terrorism trial involving the embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. Wike, a former governor of Rivers, said he would not appear in court to be Nnamdi Kanu's witness because the detained IPOB leader mentioned his name, but he would appear if he was summoned by the court. Wike responds to Nnamdi Kanu The minister explained that if he were formally summoned by the court to provide or summon, he would not hesitate to comply. He added that nobody has served him with any court summons while speaking during a media chat on Friday, October 24. His statement reads in part: “You don’t become a witness by reading the newspaper. Nobody has served me any process; nobody has subpoenaed me.” The minister further disclosed that he was not aware of the reason why the IPOB leader listed him as a witness in the ongoing terror charges against him, but promised to make himself available if he was summoned by the court. See the video of his interview here: Nnamdi Kanu speaks on his trial Nnamdi Kanu recently mentioned Wike and one other President Bola Tinubu's minister and those who worked with late President Muhammadu Buhari as witnesses in his ongoing terrorism trial. The detained Nnamdi Kanu also mentioned two sitting governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the southeast and southwest, and several top security chiefs from the Buhari administration were also mentioned. Kanu told the court that his plan was to present witnesses totalling 23. However, they would be divided into two. The first set would be referred to as “ordinary but material witnesses,” while the second category would be tagged as “vital and compellable”, who shall be “summoned under Section 232 of the Evidence Act, 2011.” Among those prominent under "compellable witnesses" are two ministers of President Tinubu, who are Wike and David Umahi, the Minister of Works. Also among them are two APC governors, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos and Hope Uzodimma of Imo. Former AGF Abubakar Malami is also included. Kanu has been in detention since the administration of Buhari and has been facing terrorism charges over the activities of IPOB in the southeast. Rivers: Tension as Supreme Court makes major move on Tinubu's declaration of emergency rule

The Supreme Court has received the submission of the federal government and the national assembly on the emergency rules declared in RiversJustice Inyang Okoro, who led the seven-man panel of the apex court, adjourned the case following the adoption of the processes by the parties10 states in Nigeria are challenging the federal government's decision to declare a state of emergency in Rivers The Supreme Court has reserved its judgment on the suit challenging President Bola Tinubu's declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State in March this year. Justice Inyang Okoro, who led the seven-man panel of the apex court, adjourned the case following the adoption of the processes by the parties on Tuesday, October 21. Who are those challenging Tinubu in court? The attorneys general of 10 states are the plaintiffs in the suit, while the Federal Government and the national assembly are the defendants. Channels Television reported that during the proceedings on Tuesday, Delta State, which was the fifth plaintiff, withdrew from the case and its decision was not objected to by the federal government's counsel, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN). During the adoption of the process, Eyotayo Jegede, the counsel to the plaintiff, explained that their case was not to deny the power of the president to declare a state of emergency but to challenge the effect on the office of the governor, deputy governor, and the state house of assembly. In his defence to the question of the court concerning a possible threat in the process of the proclamation, Lateef Fagbemi, the counsel to the federal government and attorney general of the federation, explained that there was no threat and that the plaintiffs did not have any evidence to prove it. FG's defence of Rivers' emergency rule He further explained that Rivers state was in a serious crisis, which involved the governor and legislature, which led to the action of President Tinubu in March. The AGF also explained that Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu and members of the State House of Assembly were only suspended and not removed. He noted that the development was part of the extraordinary measures by the president to bring decorum to the state. Finally, Fagbemi stated that the only choice left with the president was to declare a state of emergency in the state. He then urged the Supreme Court to dismiss the suit in its entirety. Charles Yohila, counsel to the national assembly, aligned with the submission of Fagbemi. Following the submissions of the parties in the suit, the Supreme Court reserved its judgment, and the date would be communicated to the parties in the suit. Osinbajo faults the Supreme Court Legit.ng earlier reported that former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has alleged that Nigeria's court system operates more on technicalities than on the delivery of justice. Osinbajo said the primary purpose of any justice system is to serve the people, unlike that of Nigeria, which, according to him, glorifies procedural formalities. The former vice president made the comment while speaking at the second Prof. Yusuf Ali’s Annual Lecture at the Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, on Thursday, October 9. Source: Legit.ng

Ajadi kicks against proposed bill to move 2027 elections to 2026

A South-West stalwart of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi, has urged the National Assembly not to move the 2027 general elections to 2026, warning that such a move would disrupt adequate preparations by political parties, candidates, and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). It would be recalled that the National Assembly recently proposed conducting Nigeria’s next presidential and governorship elections in November 2026 instead of the usual February/March 2027. The proposal, contained in the Electoral Act (Amendment) Bill 2025, recommends that all election petitions be concluded before the May 29, 2027 handover date. It states that: “Elections into the office of the President and Governor of a State shall be held not later than 185 days before the expiration of the term of office of the last holder of the office.” Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, Hon. Adebayo Balogun had explained that the amendment seeks to “ensure that all manner of election litigations are dispensed with before the swearing-in of winners.” However, in a statement on Thursday, Ajadi condemned the proposed shift, describing it as unnecessary and counterproductive. He cautioned the National Assembly against putting undue pressure on INEC, political parties, and candidates by rushing the electoral process. Ajadi, who was the NNPP governorship candidate in Ogun State during the 2023 general elections, reminded lawmakers that elections are serious national exercises that require proper planning and sufficient timelines for all stakeholders. He argued that the justification for the proposed amendment — to conclude petitions before the handover date — “does not hold water.” According to him, it is the responsibility of the judiciary and petitioners to ensure timely resolution of electoral disputes, not to truncate the established electoral calendar. “Shifting the election to 2026 will further weaken political institutions and plunge the country into prolonged politicking at the expense of governance,” Ajadi warned. He stressed that elections should not be rushed, emphasizing that adequate preparation by INEC, parties, and candidates is vital to credible polls. “Election requires proper and adequate planning. Political parties need time and resources to recruit credible candidates, while candidates also need time to prepare. The National Assembly should instead appeal to the judiciary to give priority to election petitions and ensure they are concluded on time,” he stated. Ajadi further cautioned that moving the polls forward could cripple governance, disrupt ongoing reforms, and distract public officials from developmental duties. “We can not be in a perpetual election period. Governance is essential for national progress. The National Assembly should be cautious of the severe negative implications of bringing the 2027 elections forward to 2026,” he appealed.
