The US government shutdown, the longest in the country’s history, could come to an end on Wednesday, US time. Politicians in the House of Representatives are expected to begin voting at around 5pm, DC time, (9am, Thursday, AEDT), to pass the government’s budget. Yet, one of the Democratic party’s senior leaders has said he expects the vast majority of its members to oppose the budget plan as it doesn’t contain extensions to subsidies used by many Americans to lower their healthcare bills. That’s despite a clutch of Democratic senators paving the way for the shutdown to end. Source: News.com.au Wednesday will also see the swearing in of Democrat Congresswoman Adelita Grijalva. That should give the numbers for another issues the White House wishes would go away. Her vote may see more of the Epstein files released. The Democrats have released emails which they claim are from Jeffrey Epstein saying Donald Trump “knew about the girls” he was poaching from Mar-a-Lago and that Mr Trump “spent hours” with a victim. A furious White House has said the Democrats are spinning a “fake narrative”. Meanwhile, Mr Trump has indicated he will sue the BBC for $US1 billion ($1.5bn) after claims it selectively edited his January 6 2021 speech prior to the storming of the US’ Capitol building. That’s despite his lawyers giving the BBC a list of demands to prevent such an outcome occurring. Read on for more updates. Nov 12, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Dems set to vote against US shutdown ending Benedict Brook The US Government could reopen on Wednesday evening local time after a budget bill passed the Senate with the support of some Democrats the day before. Voting could begin in the House of Representatives around 5pm, Washington time, (8am, Thursday, AEDT). However, Democrats in the House are unhappy that the bill to reopen the government doesn’t include extensions for healthcare subsidies. The Republicans have merely said Congress can have a vote on the issue next month. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries has said it is his “strong expectation” that all Democrats will oppose the bill. Nov 12, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Alleged Epstein email states Trump 'knew about the girls' Benedict Brook As the US shutdown looks like it’s nearing an end, normal US government business is resuming – and in 2025 that mean’s the Epstein files are back. The Democrats have released new documents which they claim show Jeffrey Epstein stating Donald Trump “knew about the girls” and that the now US president “spent hours” at Epstein’s house with one of the disgraced financier’s victims. But the White House has said the Democrats have “selectively leaked” emails to create a “fake narrative”. Mr Trump knew Epstein but he has denied any knowledge of Epstein’s illegal behaviour and there is no suggestion Mr Trump did anything illegal or untoward himself. Nov 12, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Vote set to occur on releasing all the Epstein files Benedict Brook The White House may wish the Epstein files would just vanish but a drawback of the US Government reopening is that issue is set to rear its head again. That’s because a new Democrat Congresswoman will be sworn in and she has vowed to get behind a fresh move to release the rest of the documents the government holds on the late disgraced financier. Representative-elect Adelita Grijalva. (AP Photo/J. Scott Applewhite, File) Adelita Grijalva, who represents Arizona, should enable enough votes to prevent the Republican Party leadership from blocking a petition that the rest of the files are made public. There has been anger from many in the Democrats that Ms Grijalva has been prevented from being sworn in during the shutdown. Nov 12, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Trump formally asks Israel to pardon PM Netanyahu Benedict Brook Donald Trump has formally asked Israel’s president to pardon Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu who is being dogged by corruption charges. Mr Netanyahu, known as “Bibi,” has long been under investigation accused of bribery, fraud and breach of trust. He is alleged to have accepted luxury gifts – including cigars and champagne – worth more than $320,000 in exchange for political favours. He has denied all the charges. (Chip Somodevilla/Pool via AP, file) Mr Trump has repeatedly called for the charges be dropped, for instance in speeches and on social media. Nov 12, 2025 Trump: I have an 'obligation' to sue the BBC Benedict Brook The US president has said he has an “obligation” to sue UK broadcaster the BBC over a program which edited his speech before the January 2021 riot on Capitol Hill where a mob tried to overturn the legitimate election result of Joe Biden’s win. The BBC has apologised for the edit on its Panorama program that didn’t make clear that two parts of his speech spliced together were actually spoken much further apart on the day. Mr Trump’s personal lawyers had threatened the BBC with being sued for $US1 billion ($1.5bn) unless it apologised and paid some compensation by Friday. Nov 12, 2025 HIGHLIGHT Obese people could be denied visas to the US Brielle Burns The US State Department has issued a controversial directive instructing embassy and consulate officials to consider denying visas to applicants with chronic health conditions, according to US media. The internal guidance, reviewed by KFF Health News, specifies that conditions including cardiovascular diseases, respiratory illnesses, cancers, diabetes, metabolic disorders, neurological diseases, and mental health conditions could warrant visa denial. Officials are even encouraged to consider obesity as a factor. The directive centres on financial self-sufficiency, asking whether applicants possess adequate resources to cover potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical care throughout their lifespan without requiring public assistance or government-funded institutionalisation. Nov 12, 2025 Trump touts 'big victory' over shutdown Brielle Burns as the government moves closer to ending the nation’s longest-ever shutdown. “Congratulations… on a very big victory,” Mr Trump told Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson during his address at a Veterans Day ceremony in Arlington National Cemetery. “We’re opening up our country. Should have never been closed, should have never been closed.” President Donald Trump speaks during an event to mark Veterans Day at Arlington National Cemetery. Picture: AP/Evan Vucci The comments come after eight Democrats broke ranks and sided with Republicans to pass a bill to fund the government through January 30, in a 60 to 40 vote yesterday. The bill will now go to the House of Representatives, where a vote could be held as early as tomorrow. It will then be sent to Donald Trump’s desk for final approval. Nov 12, 2025 HIGHLIGHT US moves world's largest warship to Latin America Brielle Burns The US has moved the world’s largest warship, the USS Gerald R. Ford, and its strike group to Latin American waters amid escalating tensions with Venezuela. USS Gerald R. Ford, the US’s most advanced aircraft carrier, entered the US Naval Forces Southern Command’s area of responsibility, which encompasses Latin America and the Caribbean, on Tuesday, US time. The deployment of the vessel, which carries over 4,000 sailors and dozens of aircraft, was last month as part of Donald Trump’s campaign against drug trafficking in the region. The USS Gerald R. The Trump administration is conducting a military campaign in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific, deploying naval and air forces for its anti-drugs offensive. US forces have carried out strikes on at least 20 vessels in international waters in the region since early September, killing at least 76 people. Venezuela fears the military build-up in the area, which also includes F-35 stealth warplanes deployed to Puerto Rico and six US Navy ships in the Caribbean, is a regime change plot in disguise. Picture: Jonathan KLEIN / AFP Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, whose last two reelections were dismissed as fraudulent by the US, has accused the Trump administration of “fabricating a war.” On Tuesday, the defence ministry in Venezuela announced a “massive deployment” of land, sea, air, river and missile forces as well as civilian militia to counter “imperial threats.” However, such announcements are common in Venezuela, and have not always led to visible military deployments. Russia also denounced the US strikes on boats from Venezuela – an ally of Moscow – on Tuesday, labelling them illegal and “unacceptable”. “This is how, in general, lawless countries act, as well as those who consider themselves above the law,” Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in televised Read related topics:Donald Trump More related stories US Politics Obese people banned under new visa move People with health issues like obesity may be denied visas to the US under a huge new move from Donald Trump.
