Responsible AI Key to India’s Tech Transformation: Google India Head

New Delhi: Responsible and trusted use of artificial intelligence (AI) will be critical to India's technology-led transformation, with the onus on every stakeholder in the ecosystem to ensure safety and accountability, Google India’s country manager Preeti Lobana said on Thursday.“For AI to be really adopted and be in everyday use, there is a lot of onus on all of us as an ecosystem to make sure that it is safe and trusted. AI would serve as a crucial foundation in the journey towards a Viksit Bharat, underlining that trust and safety are prerequisites for widespread adoption,” she said at Google’s ‘Safe and Trusted AI” event here. Citing the country’s diversity, Lobana said that the complexity of India would show the world how technology can scale and drive impact, even to solve the toughest systemic issues with precise, tailored, locally-conceptualised solutions for the many pockets (that exist in India). “AI represents a transformational technology that will unlock human potential, with India leading this revolution in real time,” she added. She also emphasised that while AI promises a major leap forward, progress must be built on a foundation of confidence and collaboration. “It can’t be just a leap of faith. We must take a confident step into solid ground," she said, noting that safety is not a finish line but a continuous, collective responsibility.

Telangana Betters Revenue Collection, Lags in Fiscal Deficit

Hyderabad: Telangana’s revenue deficit has narrowed even as the fiscal deficit widened, according to the latest Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report for October on Thursday. Official sources in the finance department attributed the increased fiscal deficit to higher government borrowings aimed at bridging the gap between expenditure commitments and revenue inflows. The state’s revenue deficit declined from ₹112,452.89 crore in September 2025 to ₹10,113.37 crore in October. In contrast, the fiscal deficit increased sharply from ₹45,139.12 crore to ₹50,541.22 crore during the same period. Loans taken by the government showed a corresponding rise, matching the fiscal deficit figures, reflecting a greater dependence on external borrowing. During the seven-month period from April to October, the state realised 50.95 per cent (₹1,45,124.52 crore) of total budgeted receipts of ₹2,84,837.29 crore, while 50.83 per cent (₹1,33,920.93 crore) of the total expenditure target of ₹2,63,486.74 crore was met. Official sources said, with just five months remaining in the fiscal year, the government must mobilise nearly half of both receipts and expenditure targets to stay aligned with budget estimates. Revenue receipts touched ₹94,555.97 crore, amounting to 41.16 per cent of the budget estimate of ₹2,29,720.62 crore, marginally higher than the 41.06 per cent achieved during the corresponding period of 2024-25. However, collections under stamps and registrations as well as state excise duties showed a downward trend compared to last year. GST collections remained strong at ₹30,569.02 crore, achieving 51.20 per cent of the budget target of ₹59,704.59 crore, slightly higher than the 50.39 per cent realised in 2024–25. Officials said this indicates that the first full month of GST 2.0 reforms did not negatively affect revenue inflows. Collections from stamps and registrations stood at ₹8,606.43 crore, representing 45.09 per cent of the ₹19,087.26 crore target, marginally lower than the 45.86 per cent rate recorded last year. State excise duty collections totalled ₹13,296.75 crore, reaching 48.14 per cent of the estimated ₹27,623.36 crore, compared to 42.63 per cent in the previous fiscal cycle. Borrowings have already reached 93.58 per cent of the full-year projection of ₹54,009.74 crore, with the state securing ₹50,541.22 crore in loans by October, significantly higher than the 71.30 per cent utilisation recorded in the same period of 2024–25. Expenditure obligations continued to rise, with ₹16,529.88 crore spent on interest payments, ₹27,633.13 crore on salaries and wages, ₹10,853.72 crore on pensions, and ₹9,446.95 crore on subsidies.

UK Indo-Pacific Minister Seema Malhotra Begins First India Visit

New Delhi: British minister for the Indo-Pacific, Seema Malhotra, began her visit to India on Thursday, her first since taking office, and is expected to advance the implementation of the recently signed landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the two countries. I’m Glad I Joined When I Did: Tabu Says She Wouldn’t Debut Today

Indian cinema’s most consistent and versatile performer, Tabu, recently turned showstopper for couture maestros Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla—and unsurprisingly, she stole the show. But it was her honest reflection after the event that truly sparked conversation. When asked whether she would consider debuting today as a Gen-Z actor in the current entertainment landscape, Tabu smiled and said, “I don’t think I’ll be entering the movies now. I’m happy I did when I did.” A simple line, but layered with meaning. Known for her acting brilliance as well as her clarity and individuality, Tabu subtly pointed to how drastically the film industry has changed—from the pace of fame to the pressures on newcomers. She hinted that the era she entered allowed actors to grow organically, experiment freely, and discover themselves without the constant scrutiny of social media or the race for instant popularity. The environment back then, she suggested, nurtured depth and long-term evolution—luxuries that many young actors today rarely enjoy. Now, the industry is faster, more competitive, and relentlessly demanding. Visibility often overshadows craft, and virality sometimes outruns talent. Fans appreciated Tabu’s candour, which felt both grounded and refreshing. Throughout her career—from Maachis and Astitva to Haider, Andhadhun, and Drishyam—she has charted her own path, untouched by trends or pressure to conform. Her journey stands as a reminder of a time when storytelling was prioritized over branding. Her comments also resurfaced conversations about the pressures faced by today’s actors—constant online scrutiny, the compulsion to maintain digital presence, and the need to build a “brand” before building a craft. Walking the ramp in Abu Jani–Sandeep Khosla’s exquisite couture, Tabu carried not just elegance but also the wisdom of someone who has navigated the industry entirely on her own terms. Her remark underscored one truth: timing, environment, and personal evolution shape every artist’s journey—and hers, she says, is something she remains deeply grateful for. This article is authored by Sakshi, an intern from ST Joseph's Degree and PG College

Why are True-Crime Shows Internet’s Guilty Pleasure?

From late-night binge sessions to podcast marathons during morning commutes, true crime is the internet's favourite escape. But why do we consume stories that should, by logic, terrify us?The answer lies in human psychology. Humans are wired for curiosity, especially about the dark corners of behaviour. True-crime gives us a safe window into danger without real-world consequences. It tricks the brain into believing it's learning survival skills: red flags, criminal patterns, clues, and motivations.Another factor is Justice -- in a world where many things feel unfair, true crime does often end with closure: the criminal caught, justice served. That emotional satisfaction almost feels therapeutic. But beyond psychology, true-crime taps into the simple truth that people are fascinated by people. Motivations, lies, breakdowns, secrets—these stories explore the extremes of human nature. They answer the unsettling question: "What are people truly capable of?"And let's face it, content is crafted masterfully-Suspenseful music, cliff-hangers, witness interviews, plot twists-it's storytelling that keeps dopamine dancing.Of course, some of us watch it for community: the Reddit threads, WhatsApp discussions, Twitter debates that build up digital tribes of armchair detectives. Is that weird? Not really. That's what makes us human.True-crime is the dark, thrilling rollercoaster we can ride without leaving the couch—and that’s exactly why we can’t stop watching. The article has been authored by Siftpreet kaur, an Intern at Deccan Chronicle.

India Urged to Extradite Sheikh Hasina, Aide

Dhaka: Bangladesh's interim government on Monday urged India to immediately extradite deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, hours after a special tribunal sentenced them to death in absentia for "crimes against humanity"."We urge the Indian government to immediately hand over these two convicted individuals to the Bangladeshi authorities," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement, according to the state-run BSS news agency. It said the existing bilateral extradition agreement between Bangladesh and India marks the transfer of the two convicts as a compulsory responsibility for New Delhi. The ministry also said that granting shelter to individuals convicted of crimes against humanity would be considered an "unfriendly" act and a disregard for justice. The International Crimes Tribunal-Bangladesh (ICT-BD) on Monday sentenced Hasina and Kamal to death in absentia for "crimes against humanity" during last year's student uprising.Hasina has been living in India since she fled Bangladesh on August 5 last year in the face of the massive protests. She was earlier declared a fugitive by the court. Khan is also believed to be in India. In December last year, Bangladesh sent India a note verbale, requesting Hasina's extradition. India confirmed receipt of the formal diplomatic note but did not comment further. The foreign ministry's statement said that handing over the two is "a mandatory obligation for India" as per the extradition treaty between the two countries.Separately, Legal Adviser Asif Nazrul said that the interim government will write a letter to India again to extradite Hasina."If India continues to shelter this mass murderer, then India must understand that it is an act of hostility...," Nazrul was quoted as saying by the Bangla-language daily Prothom Alo.Nazrul described the death sentence to Hasina as the "greatest event of establishing justice on the soil of Bangladesh.""I am not surprised (by the verdict). Given the fresh, irrefutable and strong evidence of crimes against humanity committed by Hasina and her associates, they should be given the maximum punishment if tried in any court in the world," he said.Former premier Khaleda Zia's Bangladesh Nationalist Party criticised India for giving shelter to "fugitive" Hasina."India has given shelter to a fugitive criminal. But the country is giving her the chance to do sabotage against Bangladesh, and this is not a lawful behaviour from India. This is very unfortunate," BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi was quoted as saying by the Daily Star newspaper.Speaking at a press conference, the BNP leader said a country like India, which upholds democracy and has an independent judiciary, should not allow Hasina the space to engage in wrongful activities.Right-wing Jamaat-e-Islami also urged India to extradite Hasina."If one claims to behave as a good neighbour, if one aspires to maintain friendly relations, this is their foremost responsibility," Jamaat Secretary General Mia Golam Porwar said, referring to Hasina's extradition."We demand that she be returned to Bangladesh," he added.National Citizen Party (NCP) Member-Secretary Akhter Hossain said the death sentence given to Hasina represents "appropriate justice".He urged both the Bangladesh government to swiftly enforce the verdict and the Indian government to return her to Dhaka."We call upon the Government of India not to give refuge to Sheikh Hasina. She carried out genocide against the people of Bangladesh and committed crimes against humanity. India must hand her over to Bangladesh's justice system," he said in a video message.

Lakshmi Manchu Opens Up About First Experience of Abuse at 15

Actor Lakshmi Manchu has opened up about a traumatic incident from her teenage years, recalling how an unexpected encounter on public transport left her shaken and confused. In an interview with Hauterrfly, she said she was just 15 and in the tenth grade when she first faced sexual harassment. Lakshmi explained that she grew up in a highly protected environment as the daughter of actor Mohan Babu, always travelling with a driver, a bodyguard and her mother. But during one school activity, students were taken by public transport to collect their hall tickets — a change she had looked forward to. That excitement quickly faded. Lakshmi said she was inappropriately touched by strangers during the journey, leaving her disturbed by a feeling she couldn’t fully comprehend at the time. “The violation I faced… what is this ugly feeling? I was 15. I moved away and didn’t fight back. When I told my girlfriends, they said it happened to them too. It wasn’t something special done to me — it happens to everyone,” she said. She noted that harassment on public transport is so common that if a woman claims she hasn’t experienced it, “she’s lying.” Lakshmi added that she broke down during the MeToo movement because every point highlighted by the Women’s Commission reflected an experience she had lived through. The actor also spoke about the added vulnerability of belonging to a prominent family. She said people often assume those from well-known households will remain silent. “Sometimes people want to mess with you when you’re from a big family because they think we won’t speak out. Even if a theft happens at home, I can’t go public about it. Let the ₹15,000 go — that’s how I was raised. Be careful, but avoid putting your name out unnecessarily,” she said. Lakshmi Manchu was last seen in the film 'Daksha: A Deadly Conspiracy', which hit cinemas on September 20.

No Corruption Case Against Nitish, Only NDA Can Develop Bihar: Rajnath Singh

Haijpur: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Tuesday claimed that there is not a single corruption case against Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, and asserted that only the NDA can make the state 'viksit' (developed).Addressing an election rally in Vaishali district, Singh claimed that INDIA bloc leaders were lying about their poll promise of giving government jobs to one member of every family, if voted to power, and questioned as to where they would get the requisite money."During the UPA regime, the Centre gave only Rs 2 lakh crore to Bihar, whereas the Modi government has released Rs 15 lakh crore to the eastern state in 10 years," Singh claimed. "Only NDA can think of further developing Bihar... Vote for NDA, not for 'jungle raj'," he said. The Indian economy was in the 11th position, but due to steps taken by the Modi government, it is in the fifth position now and will soon take the third spot, he added.

Bandla Ganesh Takes Swipe at Vijay Deverakonda's Gen Z Persona and Director Choices

Bandla Ganesh's mockery of Vijay Deverakonda's offscreen attitude in the presence of actor Kiran Abbavaram has become a talking point. At a K-Ramp event on Monday evening, the producer of Gabbar Singh and Temper struck a controversial note by taking a swipe at Vijay's flamboyant dressing style and Gen Z-friendly attitude he has been known for since Arjun Reddy.Ganesh, in his no-holds-barred style, took a dig at Vijay for wearing loose pants and sporting goggles "at night". He also implied that the actor is particular about associating with star directors. A few years ago, after the success of Rangasthalam, director Sukumar's film with Vijay was announced. It got shelved later, though.Netizens have questioned Ganesh for targeting someone with no background. Film observers feel that the producer couldn't have dared to be overtly critical of someone whose father is a star or has a toxic fan base. "All heroes worth their salt would like to be directed by top-tier filmmakers. It's a natural urge," a movie buff wrote.
