Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease explained as Nashville 9-1-1 star dies aged 23

Nashville 9-1-1 star Isabelle Tate has died at the age of 23, her agency has confirmed. The actress, who wanted to 'change the world,' died on Sunday, October 19, from a 'rare form' of Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease. Her talent agent, The McCray Agency, shared their 'complete heartbreak' over her death in an Instagram post. The agency stated: "I’ve known Izzy since she was a teenager, and she recently returned to acting. "She booked the first series she auditioned for, 9-1-1 Nashville. She had a wonderful time." Tate played a bachelorette party guest involved in an accident in the ABC show's pilot episode, which aired on October 9. Also a Middle Tennessee State University graduate in business, she 'never once' made excuses for her disability, an obituary shared by her family read. The tribute went on to describe Tate as 'full of fire' and 'a fighter,' adding: "Isabelle loved volunteering her time to all things, particularly animals - her idea of a fun outing was visiting an animal shelter and doling out lots of love." "She was also quite musically inclined, often spending hours writing and recording songs with friends and even publishing a few," it continued. "What she loved the most, though, was spending time with family and friends, always the life of the party. "Her sister was her best friend and her mom was her shining beacon of light." What is Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease? According to the Charcot-Marie-Tooth Association (CMTA), CMT is a group of 'multisystem, multiorgan diseases' caused by mutations in more than 130 genes. It impacts the peripheral nerves that connect the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body, responsible for movement, sensation, hearing and organ function. Symptoms can include weakness and the wasting away of muscles in the arms and legs; spinal deformities; hip dysplasia; hearing loss; and breathing difficulties. It could also manifest as chronic pain, muscle weakness, difficulty walking, balance problems or numbness. Symptoms are lifelong and get progressively worse. More than three million people are affected by CMT worldwide. The disease is named after the three doctors who first identified the disease in 1886, Jean-Martin Charcot, Pierre Marie and Howard Henry Tooth. Isabelle Tate's experience with CMT In a 2022 Instagram post, Tate opened up about her experience with CMT since being diagnosed at just 13-years-old. CMT impacted her leg muscles, and over the years, she noticed 'little things' would get more difficult. But in 2022, the disease progressed to the point of her needing to use a wheelchair. She said having to 'accept and surrender' to the condition's progression 'has been extremely hard.' "I don’t know why these were the cards I was dealt in life, but I can’t change it, so I’m choosing to embrace it and not let it define me," she added. "This has really changed my perspective on life, and if I’ve learnt anything from this, it’s to appreciate the little things that are easily taken for granted." In lieu of flowers, Tate's family has requested donations in her name at the CMTA.

Emman Atienza, TikTok star and the daughter of TV host Kim Atienza, has died at the age of 19. Her family took to Instagram to share the heartbreaking news of her 'unexpected' passing. She was known for speaking openly about mental health online, racking up more than 856,000 TikTok followers and nearly 50 million likes. Emman was the daughter of Filipino TV presenter and weather man, Kim, and his wife, entrepreneur Felicia Hung. Her grandfather was former Manila mayor Lito Atienza. Posting a collection of photos to Felicia's Instagram, the family said: "It’s with deep sadness that we share the unexpected passing of our daughter and sister, Emman. "She brought so much joy, laughter, and love into our lives and into the lives of everyone who knew her. "Emman had a way of making people feel seen and heard, and she wasn’t afraid to share her own journey with mental health. Her authenticity helped so many feel less alone." They added: "To honor Emman’s memory, we hope you carry forward the qualities she lived by: compassion, courage, and a little extra kindness in your everyday life." The statement was signed off by Kim and Felicia and their children, Jose and Eliana. Tributes soon began flooding in for the late social media star. "Thank you for sharing your life with us. Rest in power, Emman." Medical records from Los Angeles County say Emman died at an LA home on Wednesday, October 23. She had moved to the city in August, reports the GMA Network. Two days before her death, Emman appeared in high spirits as she took to TikTok for a life update. The compilation video saw her dancing with friends, rollerskating, skateboarding and rock climbing. "Life lately... does this go hard?" she wrote in the caption.

Netflix subscribers in tears over ‘disturbing’ 100% film storming most-watched charts

Netflix subscribers have broken down in tears over a 'harrowing' new documentary with a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score. The streamer is renowned for its true crime coverage, whether an in-depth, three-part documentary series like Amy Bradley is Missing, or a feature-length movie like The High School Catfish. And now, Emmy-winning filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir is behind the platform's latest offering, which is dominating the Netflix charts. Having released on Friday (October 17), the doc is currently the second most-watched movie worldwide on the platform, and the number one in the US. Running for an hour and 37 minutes, it's been hailed one of 'the best and most important films of the year'. Using bodycam footage, 911 calls and police interview footage, it retells the killing of 35-year-old Ajike 'AJ' Owens in Ocala, Florida. The mom-of-four was shot by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, while outside Lorincz' locked front door in June 2023. She was struck in the chest by a single bullet, while her young son stood beside her. AJ was rushed to hospital where she was later pronounced dead. Tensions between the neighbors had been building for nearly two years, with Lorincz frequently complaining about Owens’ children playing outside. She also directed racial slurs at AJ's young children. As the conflict unfolds, the documentary explores how fear, racial bias, and gun culture intertwine with the law, raising questions about Florida’s controversial 'Stand Your Ground' legislation. Gandbhir, a close friend of AJ, told Netflix Tudum: "This shocking crime left my family and me engulfed in grief and confusion. "Ajike’s community was tight-knit, rooted in mutual support and trust. It was heartbreaking to witness how such a close environment could unravel so catastrophically." The documentary in question is The Perfect Neighbor, which is streaming now on Netflix. Critics have awarded The Perfect Neighbor a 100 percent score over on Rotten Tomatoes. Mac the Movie Guy's John Stark described it as 'powerful, emotionally draining, and one of the best and most important films of the year'. LeisureByte.com's Archi Sengupta agreed it was a 'harrowing reminder of how power and prejudice can destroy so many innocent lives'. "Rarely have I seen a documentary that is so gripping and intense... It will stay with you forever," one viewer said. The discussion continued over on X, where viewers admitted to sobbing over certain gut-wrenching scenes in the film. "You won’t see a more horrifying film this year than #ThePerfectNeighbor... Cried tears of rage and sadness watching. This is what evil looks like," one wrote. A second said it was a 'devastating watch,' adding: "The level of entitlement, racism and pure evil from that lady [Lorincz] was shocking but the grace that the police gave her was truly too disturbing to watch." The Perfect Neighbor is streaming now on Netflix.
