The day before Game 1 of the World Series, the Los Angeles Dodgers announced that left-handed reliever Alex Vesia would be away from the team, as he and his wife dealt with a “deeply personal family matter.” More news: Dodgers’ Dave Roberts Sends Message to Shohei Ohtani Ahead of Game 7 In response to the troubling news, the Dodgers bullpen has honored Vesia by writing No. 51 on their hats. During Game 6 of the World Series on Friday night, the Toronto Blue Jays bullpen was seen doing the same thing in what has been an incredible act that is bigger than baseball. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Dodgers Nation (@dodgersnation) Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke on what the act meant to him and his team, especially ahead of the most important game of the season as Toronto had an opportunity to win the World Series on Friday night. “It’s everything,” Roberts said. “I didn’t learn that until after the game last night, and I think it really speaks to the brotherhood of athletes, Major League Baseball players. They’ll all say that ‘baseball is what we do but its not who we are,’ and for these guys to recognize Alex, and what he and Kayla have gone through, heartbreaking is not even a good enough descriptor. “But for them to acknowledge that, it just speaks to how much respect and love that they have for one another. It’s a huge, huge tribute to Alex.” LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – MARCH 31: Dave Roberts #30 of the Los Angeles Dodgers takes the ball from Alex Vesia #51, trailing 2-1, during the eighth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Dodger Stadium on March 31, 2023 in Los Angeles, California. Regardless of what happens tonight, we appreciate what they did.” More news: Blue Jays Manager Sends Max Scherzer Warning Ahead of World Series Game 7 For all the latest MLB news and rumors, head over to Newsweek Sports.
