Cyclone Montha crossed coast near Narasapuram between Machilipatnam and Kakinada

Amaravati: Cyclone Montha crossed the coast near Narasapuram, between Machilipatnam and Kakinada, at around midnight between 11:32 PM and 12:30 AM, and has since moved northwestward, said Dr Karuna Sagar, a scientist at the Meteorological Department in Amaravati. According to Dr. Karuna Sagar, it weakened into a cyclonic storm by 2:30 a.m. today. It will continue moving north-northwestward and enter the state of Telangana. “The severe cyclonic storm over central Bengal moved west-northwestwards and it crossed yesterday over Andhra Pradesh coast, especially south of the Kakinada, near to the Narsapur, So it crossed around midnight, 11.30 to 12.30, and further it moved northwestwards and it weakened into the cyclonic storm by 2.30 a.m. of today. So it will continue towards moving the north-northwestwards, and it will enter into the Telangana region also, we are expecting like that,” Sagar told ANI. Speaking at the IMD’s Amaravati office, the scientist stated that severe weather is anticipated, including extreme rainfall. A significant amount of rainfall is expected to continue through the afternoon. “We can expect today also very severe weather, especially the winds and rainfall may continue. Particularly we can see here, today we can expect extreme rainfall. Of course, there is a lot of rainfall activity from yesterday night onwards, so it will continue even today, till the afternoon,” said Sagar. The IMD scientist indicated that a red warning has been issued for several districts, including Nellore, Nandyal, Prakasham, Palnadu, NTR, and Guntur. Neighbouring districts such as Bapatla, Krishna, Eluru, and West Godavari are also expected to receive heavy to very heavy rainfall. Hence, an orange warning has been issued for the neighbouring districts. For Rayalseema district, a heavy rainfall is expected. “Since already heavy rainfall happened, extremely heavy rainfall happened, even today, small amount of rainfall also caused a lot of damage. So that’s why we are giving red warning to these districts, Nellore, Nandyal, Prakasham, Palnadu, NTR, and Guntur districts. The neighbouring districts like Bapatla, Krishna, Ellore, West Godavari, we are expecting heavy to very heavy rainfall. So that’s why we are giving orange warning. The remaining northern districts, we are expecting one or two places heavy rainfall. Even in the southern districts, like Rayalseema, the completely southern districts, we can expect heavy rainfall,” added Sagar. Additionally, very strong winds with speeds of 60 to 90 km/h are predicted in districts such as Bapatla, NTR, and Ellore, including some portions of Alur-Setharam and Rajanthi districts, and will extend to Konaseema and Kakinada. “Also, tomorrow, there is a small possibility for getting heavy rainfall, especially in the north coastal districts, like Ellore and Alur-Setharam, Rajanthi. Today, very strong winds we can expect, especially in the core, along the cyclone track, so the core districts, like right from the Bapatla to NTR, and Ellore, even some portion of the Alur-Setharam, Rajanthi districts, and till Konaseema, Kakinada. We can expect very strong winds, almost like 60 to 90 kmph,” mentioned Sagar. Meanwhile, in the Guntur district, strong winds uprooted trees. Officials from the Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) and the police promptly removed the fallen trees and cleared the roads, ensuring smooth traffic flow. Additionally, boats remain anchored at Visakhapatnam fishing harbour on october 29 as heavy rainfall lashed the city amid high tidal waves as Cyclone Montha gained in strength. In addition to Andhra Pradesh, Odisha is also experiencing the effects of Cyclone Montha. Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced on October 28 that 11,396 people had been evacuated. To address the Severe Cyclonic Storm (SCS) ‘Montha’, 30 teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRF) and five teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed as part of the emergency response measures. The Union Health Ministry reviewed preparedness measures for Cyclone Montha with senior officials of the eastern coastal States, including Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and Tamil Nadu, an official statement said. Skipper Shubman Gill praises partnership of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for Sydney win

Sydney (Australia): Indian skipper Shubman Gill has praised the veteran batting duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, saying that watching the ball “fly off their bats” reflected how great a touch they are in. Rohit, Virat rolled back the clock after shaking off some rustiness and a lack of rhythm, as they put on an unbeaten 168-run partnership in India’s successful chase of 237 runs in the Sydney ODI. India won by nine wickets. Both batters unleashed some of their trademark shots in what could be their final outing in Australia, considering that the ODI team is not scheduled for another Aussie tour on the road to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. “It’s a treat to watch both of them, especially when they are batting like that and seeing the ball fly off their bats and just hearing the sound that comes off their bat is something that tells you how good of a nick they are both in,” Gill said in a the post match presentation. “Watching them from outside, having that partnership for them and taking the team through is something that we often talk about in team meetings, that whoever is set…even in the last match we spoke about, we got two-three good partnerships, but none of the batsmen could really play a longer inning, so I think they both spoke about whoever is set they should take the team through and they are walking the talk, so it is a great bonus for us,” he added. Following this series, Team India will play a three-match ODI series against South Africa from November 30. Another home ODI series against New Zealand will take place in January. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting from December 24 onwards, could give them some extra game time between these two ODI series. “I think till now there is no talk about this, but I think after the South Africa series, there will be a gap, there will be a gap till the New Zealand series, so I think then we will see how to keep the players in touch, so then I think a decision will be taken,” Gill said, when asked about keeping the two superstar batters in touch and complete rhythm. Coming to the match, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. A 61-run stand between skipper Mitchell Marsh (41 in 50 balls, with five fours and a six) and Travis Head (29 in 25 balls, with six fours) started off things for Australia. Matt Short contributed a knock of 30 in 41 balls, with two fours, and a 59-run stand between Matt Renshaw (56 in 58 balls, with two fours) and Alex Carey (24 in 37 balls, with a four) took the Aussies to 183/3. But from there, Aussies collapsed to 236 all out in 46.4 overs, with Harshit Rana (4/39 in 8.4 overs), Washington Sundar (2/44) being the pick of the bowlers and Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav getting one each.In the 237 run-chase, India was off to a solid start with a 69-run opening stand between Shubman Gill (24 in 26 balls, with two fours and a six). From there, something happened that fans had waited for all series, as Rohit Sharma (121* in 125 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes) and Virat Kohli (74* in 81 balls, with seven fours) put on an unbeaten 168-run partnership and achieved several milestones, winning the match with nine wickets still in hand. Rohit won the ‘Player of the Match’ award and the ‘Player of the Series’ award as well for top-scoring in the series with 202 runs, including a century and a fifty each. Social media has been flooded with daily updates, fan theories, and nostalgic throwbacks from the world of Shanti Niketan since then. It gave me more than commercial success; it gave me a connection with millions of homes, a place in the emotional fabric of a generation.” “In the 25 years since, I’ve straddled two powerful platforms–media and public policy–each with its own impact, each demanding a different kind of commitment. Today, I stand at a crossroads where experience meets emotion and creativity meets conviction. I return not just as an actor but as someone who believes in the power of storytelling to spark change, preserve culture, and build empathy. In contributing to this next chapter, I hope to honour the legacy of Kyunki–and help shape a future where India’s creative industries aren’t just celebrated, but truly empowered,” she added. The show, which began airing in 2000, quickly became a household name. It ran for eight long years and ruled the TRP charts for most of the time. Indian Stock markets open with rally, Sensex near all-time high

Mumbai: Indian stock markets opened with a strong rally on Thursday, driven by positive investor sentiment ahead of a likely US-India trade deal. The Nifty 50 index crossed the 26,000 mark for the first time after September 2024, opening at 26,057.20, up 188.60 points or 0.73 per cent. Its last 52-week high was 26,277.35. The BSE Sensex also surged, opening at 85,154.15, a gain of 727.81 points or 0.86 per cent, close to its all-time high of 85,478.25 recorded on September 27, 2024. Experts attributed the rally to reports of an imminent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with expectations of a US-India trade deal. Ajay Bagga, Banking and Market Expert, told ANI, “Indian markets are showing a positive gap-up open as per the futures positioning. There are reports of an imminent Trump-Modi meeting and an announcement of a US-India trade deal that cuts tariffs from 50 per cent to 15 per cent for Indian exports to the US. India could pledge more US energy, defence, and agri exports and a glide path to reducing Russian oil purchases. Indian markets are moving up in this anticipation”. He further added “We feel the announcement will be calibrated given the Bihar elections in early November, to avoid any opposition accusations of ‘selling’ out Indian energy and farm interests. Overall negative global sentiments but positive Indian sentiments are in a fight.” In the broad market indices on NSE, Nifty 100 surged 0.48 per cent, Nifty Midcap 100 up by 0.11 per cent, Nifty Small cap 100 lost 0.20 per cent in the opening session. In the sectoral indices on NSE, except Nifty Pharma all other sectors opened with gains. Nifty IT surged 1.87 per cent, Nifty Private Bank 0.52 per cent, Nifty FMCG 0.56 per cent and Nifty Auto surge 0.20 per cent. Among corporate results today, key companies reporting include Hindustan Unilever, Colgate-Palmolive (India), Laurus Labs, Vardhman Textiles, Tata Teleservices (Maharashtra), Sagar Cements, and PTC India Financial Services. Globally, markets remain cautious. US markets have lost momentum, with safe-haven assets such as gold and silver seeing continued declines, despite earnings upgrades for the S&P 500 hitting the highest levels since 2021. Ongoing trade tensions, a 22-day long US government shutdown, concerns over overextension in AI and capital expenditure, and US-China tariff rhetoric have contributed to subdued market performance. Oil prices, however, are rising sharply following US sanctions on Russian oil firms. Earlier, plans for a proposed Putin-Trump meeting in Budapest were postponed due to lack of progress on a common negotiation framework. Manav Modi, Analyst for Precious Metals Research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services, noted, “Gold price, after a significant rise, moved into a new phase and continues to be volatile. No major fundamental has changed for such a big fall; however, the market is setting equilibrium as riskier assets witness a surge. Along with a slight surge in the dollar index, panic selling amidst margin calls at elevated levels triggered volatility in the market.” In Asia, markets were largely negative, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 down 1.25 per cent, Taiwan’s weighted index losing 0.4 per cent, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index declining 0.07 per cent, and South Korea’s KOSPI down 0.06 per cent. Sri Lanka follows in second position, marginally ahead of India with a points percentage of 66.67 per cent. Meanwhile, the West Indies remain in sixth position after losing five successive Tests. The series opener lasted for two and a half days in Ahmedabad, with India revelling in a victory by an innings and 140 runs. Unlike the disaster in Ahmedabad, the West Indies put up an unprecedented fight, dragging the game into the fifth day after producing a resilient batting display against a worn-out India attack during the second innings. Despite the gritty effort, India overwhelmed the Caribbean side with a 7-wicket win. After winning the toss, India hammered 518/5 and decided to declare on the second day. In reply, the West Indies players struggled to convert their positive starts into substantial totals and were bowled out for 248. India imposed a follow-on, a move that drew widespread criticism from fans, considering the bowlers were spent after bowling for 81.5 overs. Captain Roston Chase hammered 40 off 72 deliveries before Justin Greaves (50*) and Jayden Seales (32) entertained the spectators with a 79-run partnership for the 10th wicket. The West Indies concluded their second innings with 390, setting a 121-run target for India to hunt. KL Rahul’s elegant 58* off 108 to steer India to a 2-0 series win.
