Elderly dad suffers two heart attacks after son's brutal eight-minute attack

A man fuelled by drink and drugs launched a brutal attack on his 79-year-old father, leading to the elderly man suffering two heart attacks. Oliver Fury, 42, lost control and hurled a stool at his father in the early hours of the morning. He then proceeded to punch, kick and stamp on his defenceless dad as he lay on the floor. Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that the savage assault lasted approximately eight minutes before Fury demanded the keys to his father's car. Despite having consumed 10 pints of cider, snorted two lines of cocaine and smoked cannabis, he drove off and 'completely totalled' the vehicle in what seemed to be an attempt to take his own life. He sustained a broken hip and a fractured spine. However, his father suffered extensive swelling and bruising and spent four days in hospital where doctors had to resuscitate him twice after he suffered two cardiac arrests. Fury has now been sentenced to 40 months in prison. Join our Court and Crime WhatsApp group HERE Prosecutor Jillian Newton said that the defendant attacked his dad at their family home in the early hours of August 1 this year. The horrific attack was witnessed by his mother, reports Stoke on Trent Live . Miss Newton said: "He started to punch and kick him several times as hard as he could. The victim remained on the floor telling the defendant to stop. The defendant picked up a stool and hit him with it before throwing it." Fury demanded the key to his dad's car from his mum or he would start on her. She asked him not to take the car. Police arrived at the address at 2am. Mr Fury senior was lying face down and there was blood on the floor. Staffordshire Police were then called to the junction of Mow Lane and Puddle Bank Lane, near Biddulph, where Fury's dad's vehicle had been involved in a single vehicle collision. The Mercedes was a write-off. The defendant was taken to the Royal Stoke University Hospital. He refused to give a sample of blood but he did tell officers he had two lines of cocaine, 10 pints of cider and some cannabis. His dad lost consciousness and attended hospital. He suffered swelling and bruising, multiple wounds to his scalp, left cheek, eyes, right forearm, a potential collapsed lung and suffered two cardiac arrests. In a victim impact statement, the family said they are traumatised by Fury's actions. They said he needs professional support for addiction and depression. The statement said: "We try to give him a comfortable home. We are still in shock as to why this went so horribly wrong. We want him to receive the help. We pray we can reconcile with our son who we love unconditionally." Fury, of Saville Street, Macclesfield , pleaded guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, aggravated vehicle taking, driving without insurance and failing to provide a specimen of blood for analysis. Catherine O'Reilly, mitigating, said it was a 'very sad situation' for the Fury family. She said: "There is a complex relationship between the defendant and his father. "He had been in a long-term relationship. That had broken down acrimoniously. He had moved in with his parents. He was finding that difficult. There is no excuse for his behaviour. "He was under the influence of alcohol. He had taken cocaine and cannabis. He spiralled and hit rock bottom. He is deeply ashamed. He is remorseful. He is particularly remorseful that his mother saw the assault." She said Fury suffered a broken hip, a fractured spine, fracture to his right hand, broken ribs and general bruising. Miss O'Reilly added: "He took the car with the intention of ending his own life. He recognises the drugs and alcohol are not assisting him." Recorder Robert Smith said: "On August 1 you were residing with your parents following the breakdown of your relationship. You had been out drinking that evening. You had, by your own admission, drunk heavily. "At 1am you were sitting outside your parents' property smoking a cannabis joint. Your mother told you to come inside and you were arrogant and cocky. Your father came out while you were arguing with your mother. He grabbed hold of you and pulled you back in the house. You quite simply completely lost your temper and any form of self-control or judgement. "You struck him with a large stool and then began to kick and stamp on him while he was lying on the floor. He was a 79-year-old man completely defenceless on the floor. His injuries looked absolutely horrific. "He suffered two cardiac arrests in hospital. He requires resuscitation twice to save his life. You were moments away from a life sentence for murder. "You demanded the keys to your father's car from your mother. You told her you would turn on her if she did not do as she was told. She was terrified. "You made off in the Mercedes. You were roaring drunk. You crashed the vehicle and completely totalled it. I am told you intended to end your own life. "You told the police on the journey to hospital, 'I have battered my dad. I am not having him tell me what to do'. You said you consumed two lines of cocaine, 10 pints of cider and some cannabis. You refused to provide a sample of blood for analysis. "This was a persistent assault. Your father spent four days in hospital. He nearly died twice as a result of the beating you gave him. "You have shown not one iota of remorse or insight. You blame your victim. You sought to justify what you did. There is no justification for what you did. "I am told you show remorse. There is little evidence of that in the pre-sentence report. I view your actions as being absolutely despicable." Recorder Smith banned Fury from driving for two years which was extended by 20 months to account for the time he will spend in jail.
