NWC distances itself from sewage overflow in downtown Kingston

The National Water Commission (NWC) is distancing itself from the presence of raw sewage in a section of downtown Kingston. The NWC says the affected blocked drains are not a part of its network infrastructure. The Gleaner report on Friday that vendors at the intersections of Rose Lane, Spanish Town Road, and Upper Oxford Street complained about an overflow of raw sewage in the area, which they say has been present for weeks. They called for the intervention of the authorities. In its report, The Gleaner did not name the NWC as being responsible for the drain. The NWC, in a media release on Friday, said a team from the company visited the area and noted that the drainage infrastructure in the affected area is not part of the NWC’s sewage network. The company did not say whose responsible for the drain in question. But, the NWC noted that all its wastewater systems in the area remain stable and fully functional. “The NWC also confirms that its sewage conveyance pipelines and the nearby pumping station have experienced no operational issues since the passage of Hurricane Melissa,” the NWC said. “According to the team’s assessment, the affected drains typically convey grey water, which can become stagnant once flow is impeded. These drains fall outside of the NWC’s operational responsibility,” it added. Follow The Gleaner on X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram @JamaicaGleaner and on Facebook @GleanerJamaica.
