Schools in Tamil Nadu were scheduled to reopen on October 22 following a four-day Diwali break. However, due to heavy rainfall, schools in 19 districts have been declared closed. As the downpour is expected to continue for another day or two, schools are likely to remain closed on October 23 as well. Let us take a look at which districts may announce a school holiday. According to the Meteorological Department, the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal was likely to intensify into a low-pressure area over the southwest and adjoining central west Bay of Bengal on October 22. It was expected to move west-northwest towards the coastal regions of northern Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and southern Andhra Pradesh within 24 hours, gaining further strength. Due to the low-pressure system, a red alert has been issued for Villupuram, Chengalpattu, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai districts and Puducherry, indicating the likelihood of extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has also forecast very heavy rain for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Ariyalur, Perambalur, Thanjavur, Thiruvarur, and Nagapattinam districts, as well as the Karaikal region. Salem, Trichy, Vellore, Tirupattur, Dharmapuri and Pudukkottai districts are expected to experience heavy rain. On October 23, very heavy rainfall is likely in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram and Ranipet districts, while heavy rain is expected in Vellore, Tirupattur, Tiruvannamalai, Villupuram, Kallakurichi, Cuddalore districts and Puducherry. Accordingly, district collectors are expected to decide on declaring school holidays based on the intensity of the rainfall.
