Deaf woman survives being hit by plane that crashed into her as she walked dog in California

A deaf woman survived being hit by a small custom-made plane that crashed into her as she walked her dog in a soccer field. Tiffany Harrison was seriously injured in the freak accident in Long Beach, Southern California, on Tuesday, October 21, and had to undergo surgery. Harrison, who is in her 40s, didn’t hear the home-built two-seater aircraft approaching the field as the pilot had to make an emergency landing, her sister, Brittany McFall, told ABC7. “This is very traumatic for her, and she's probably going to have PTSD because a normal person wouldn't just...walk in the park and have this freak accident,” McFall told the outlet. “When we got the phone call that she got hit by an airplane, we couldn’t even believe it because it's something that doesn't happen,” Harrison’s sister added. Harrison suffered a fractured spine, a broken pelvis and required surgery for a large cut on her leg. Her dog survived and was not injured. Her partner, Veronica Barrera, said her “heart dropped” when she saw the plane closing in as she looked on from the parking lot where she was waiting. “That plane hit her so fast,” she told CBS News. The pilot, in his 60s, also survived the crash and is recovering. He said he didn’t think he would make it in a radio message, according to CBS. “I've lost power, declaring an emergency,” the pilot said. “I don't think I'm going to make it, uh, I'm going… I'm going to pick a field here.” He was stopping in Long Beach en route to French Valley in Riverside County when the plane’s engine went out, hangar manager Dennis Lord told ABC7. The experimental aircraft was not illegal or unsanctioned, Lord said. “They are certified by the FAA, there's hundreds of them flying over the Southern California area all the time, and we have a hangar at Compton Airport where we build them,” he added. Long Beach Fire Department crews were called to the scene on Tuesday afternoon, where they worked to remove the pilot from the plane. “When units arrived, they found one small aircraft on its belly with broken landing gears,” the fire department confirmed in a statement. “The plane’s fuselage was intact. When the plane landed, it collided with a pedestrian in the park. Units assisted with removing the pilot, an elderly male, from the airplane and transported him via paramedics to a local area hospital.”

Trump admin is ‘funneling $10 billion through the US Navy’ to ramp up migrant detention center construction

The Trump administration is funneling $10 billion from the Department of Homeland Security through the U.S. Navy to ramp up its construction of migrant detention centers across the country, according to a report. Construction on the facilities, which could hold up to 10,000 migrants each, could begin as soon as next month, sources close to the project told CNN. The DHS is leaning on the Navy to hire companies for the construction and maintenance of the detention facilities, which will reportedly be spread across Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, and Pennsylvania. The construction plans are the latest example of how the Trump administration is wielding the power of the U.S. military to carry out its anti-immigration agenda. The Independent has contacted the Department of Homeland Security and the Navy for comment. Publicly available documents from July show that contractors with the Navy “may be required to provide infrastructure, staffing, services, and/or supplies necessary to provide safe and secure confinement for aliens in the administrative custody” of DHS and ICE. Homeland Security officials have reportedly been trying to quickly secure contracts to build more detention facilities due to the uptick in immigration arrests. It was not immediately clear whether the new facilities would be built on existing Navy installations. CNN reports that the new facilities are likely to be “soft-sided tents,” similar to the ones at the complex at the Fort Bliss Army base in Texas, which became operational in August. Migrants being held at at the complex were recently subject to numerous violations of federal standards, including medical neglect, poor access to legal counsel, and dysfunctional plumbing, according to detainees and federal inspectors. Experts told CNN that it was not surprising the Trump administration was working with the military to quickly turn around the construction project. “The military is good at logistics, and they’ve had to do quick turn construction projects like this overseas,” said Todd Harrison, a senior fellow at the American Enterprise Institute specializing in defense spending. “You’re already dealing with an organization that knows how to do this type of contracting activity, and do it quickly.” Trump’s “One Big, Beautiful, Bill” in July set aside an unprecedented $45 billion for Immigration and Customs Enforcement to boost immigration detention. Federal contracts from ICE have been steadily increasing since Trump’s first term, according to the federal spending database, rising from $137.5 million awarded in 2016 to $463.4 million in 2025 so far. Official data published at the end of September reported that there are currently 59,762 people being held in ICE detention centers. ICE is planning to more than double detention capacity to more than 107,000 by January 2026, according to The Washington Post.

ICE and other federal agents raid NYC’s Canal Street vendors following complaint from MAGA influencer: ‘Check this corner out’

An immigration sweep targeted New York City vendors just days after a conservative influencer tagged Immigration and Customs Enforcement on social media to “check this corner out.” Hundreds of angry New Yorkers clashed with federal agents Tuesday afternoon at the city’s famed Canal Street, an area which for years has been a not-so-underground market for knock-off designer handbags, watches, perfumes and sunglasses as well as phones and other electronics. Protesters attempted to block immigration agents from carrying out the operation when scenes turned ugly. Savanah Hernandez, a right-wing political commentator with Turning Point USA, appeared to take credit for the anti-immigration crackdown after alerting the Department of Homeland Security to activity in the area over the weekend. “It does really seem like the admin is watching and responding to what’s being reported on X,” Hernandez said in response to another user who congratulated her. Hernandez shared a video from the corner of Canal Street and Broadway on October 19. “The entire sidewalk is filled with illegals who state they are from Senegal and I watched as they fled police,” Hernandez said. “Perhaps @ICEgov should go check this corner out.” She followed up with another post Monday. “Day 1 of me asking the @DHSgov to go and clean up Canal street in NYC where hoards of illegals are brazenly selling fake goods in broad daylight,” she posted. Hernandez replied to Customs and Border Patrol’s X account Tuesday morning and told the agency to “go check out Canal St in New York City.” “There are easily 30-40 illegals there daily that are selling fake goods,” Hernandez wrote. “Would be an easy sweep and send a strong message to the sanctuary city of NY.” Federal agents swooped on the area and made a number of arrests Tuesday afternoon. Protesters surrounded masked officers and in one instance, attempted to block their vehicle from driving off as they shouted “ICE out of New York” and other chants. Agents were seen pushing protesters to the ground, and threatening them with pepper spray, before detaining several of them. As more New Yorkers joined the fray, some of the federal agents retreated on foot, followed by jeering protesters and honking vehicles. Additional federal agents, armed in combat gear and carrying long guns, also arrived with a military tactical vehicle known as a BearCat and made additional arrests. A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security said the agents were carrying out an enforcement operation against sellers of “counterfeit goods” when “rioters who were shouting obscenities, became violent and obstructed law enforcement duties including blocking vehicles and assaulting law enforcement.” New York officials condemned the operation while the NYPD clarified it was not involved. “The NYPD had no involvement in the federal operation that took place on Canal Street this afternoon,” the police department posted on X. New York Governor Kathy Hochul called out President Donald Trump as she condemned the use of pepper spray on New Yorkers. “@realDonaldTrump claims he’s targeting the “worst of the worst.” Today his agents used batons and pepper spray on street vendors and bystanders on Canal Street,” Hochul said in a statement. “You don’t make New York safer by attacking New Yorkers.” New York Democratic Mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani said the tactics were “aggressive and reckless.” “Once again, the Trump administration chooses authoritarian theatrics that create fear, not safety,” Mamdani said. “It must stop.” Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams said the city had no involvement in the action and was still gathering details. “Our administration has been clear that undocumented New Yorkers trying to pursue their American Dreams should not be the target of law enforcement, and resources should instead be focused on violent criminals,” he said.
