‘Good Boy’ review: An astonishing dog is the hero and star of horror thriller

The horror film Good Boy has such a blindingly simple, obvious story that you wonder why the film hasn’t been made before. The answer is apparent in the opening minutes. For a movie like Good Boy to exist, you need a staggering talent like Indy. The retriever with red tints on his coat emotes. He expresses love, concern and fear. He dreams. His moist nose, floppy ears and curious eyes detect supernatural beings that the human eye cannot see. All those legends about the sixth sense of dogs come true under Ben Leonberg’s clever direction. Indy – which is also the canine performer’s real name – moves with his ailing owner Todd (Shane Jensen) to the family’s ancestral house on the edge of a remote forest. Indy senses trouble as soon as his paws hit the creaking wooden floor. Something is out there that can potentially harm Todd, visible only to his loyal pet. A suitably eerie score by Sam Boase-Miller accompanies Indy as he investigates the house’s underlit corners, the basement and the woods beyond. Leonberg’s debut feature, starring his own pet, is possibly one of the finest explorations of the relationship between humans and dogs. Co-written with Alex Cannon, Good Boy is a crisp, efficient and effective thriller with ample creepiness and a mesmerising four-legged hero. Doubling up as cinematographer and editor, Leonberg never once anthropomorphises Indy while also showing exactly how a dog might behave when confronted with strange events. Leonberg often crouches down to peer over Indy’s shiny coat as he patters about the house. We also see Indy using his hunting skills to sniff out the malevolent presence – tense, frightened and yet dauntless. The perspective entirely belongs to Indy. Even the few humans are seen as Indy might see them. Todd himself is a tall, most faceless shape, defined by endearments, hugs and the occasional scolding. Good Boy has the good sense to restrict itself to 73 minutes, almost entirely devoted to a pure, innocent and heartbreakingly dedicated beast. Indy’s performance leaves Messi from Anatomy of a Fall (2023) behind. Above all else, the movie is perfectly titled.

Maharashtra: Sub-inspector accused of raping Satara doctor who allegedly died by suicide arrested

Two persons, including a police sub-inspector, have been arrested in connection with the alleged death by suicide of a 29-year-old doctor from Satara district in Maharashtra, the Hindustan Times reported. The doctor, who had been posted at the Phaltan Sub-District Hospital for the last two years, was found dead in a hotel room on Thursday. According to police, she had checked into the hotel late the previous evening and her rented accommodation was located far from the hospital, The Times of India reported. In a purported suicide note scribbled on her hand, she accused Prashant Bankar, the son of her landlord, of mental harassment, and Sub-Inspector Gopal Badane of rape, the Hindustan Times reported. Bankar, a software engineer, was arrested from a farmhouse near Pune on Friday night. Badane was taken into custody after he surrendered at the Phaltan Rural Police Station, Satara Superintendent of Police Tushar Doshi was quoted as saying by the newspaper. The sub-inspector has also been suspended from service after his name surfaced during the investigation. Meanwhile, the doctor’s cousin alleged that she faced pressure from police and politicians to falsify post-mortem reports, The Hindu reported. “There was a lot of police and political pressure on her to make wrong post-mortem reports,” the cousin told The Hindu. “She had complained about it multiple times, but it was not taken seriously.” The incident has triggered a political row in the state. Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray) leader Anand Dubey described the case as “heart-wrenching”. “We request Devendra Fadnavis to question his ministers after the deteriorating state of law and order,” Dubey told ANI. “Such incidents should not take place in future.” Mumbai Congress President Varsha Gaikwad accused the Maharashtra government of failing to protect women. “A doctor died by suicide in Satara and named a policeman as having harassed her,” Gaikwad said in a social media post. “If women cannot trust law enforcement officials, what hope is left?” On Friday, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the home portfolio, described the death as “deeply tragic”. “Whoever is responsible will face the strictest punishment,” Fadnavis was quoted as saying in Mumbai. “The concerned police officers have already been suspended. I urge the opposition not to politicise this sensitive matter.”

Bihar polls: NDA under CM Nitish Kumar’s leadership set for ‘record-breaking’ win, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday said the National Democratic alliance under the leadership of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar will script a “record-breaking” victory in the upcoming Assembly elections in the state. This was the first time that the prime minister endorsed the Janata Dal (United) chief as the alliance’s chief ministerial candidate. “In the last assembly polls in Gujarat, where the party has been in power for 30 years, all previous records were broken,” Modi said at a rally in Samastipur. “Similar was the case in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Haryana. I am confident that in Bihar, too, under Nitish Kumar, the NDA will break all previous records.” The NDA in Bihar comprises the JD(U), the BJP, Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party, Jitan Ram Manjhi’s Hindustani Awam Morcha and Upendra Kushwaha’s Rashtriya Lok Morcha. The Opposition Mahagathbandhan alliance comprises the Rashtriya Janata Dal, the Congress, Pashupati Kumar Paras’ Rashtriya Lok Janshakti Party, the Vikassheel Insaan Party, the Indian Inclusive Party and three Left parties – Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist). The Assembly polls are due to be held in two phases on November 6 and November 11, while the votes will be counted on November 14. Earlier in the day, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav alleged that Union Home Minister Amit Shah and the BJP did not want to make Kumar the chief minister again, ANI reported. The RJD leader was referring to Shah’s October 17 statement when he said that while the NDA was contesting the elections under Kumar’s leadership, the decision about the next chief minister would be taken after the polls. Yadav was named as the Mahagathbandan’s chief ministerial candidate on Thursday. ‘Top leaders of RJD, Congress out on bail’ Modi on Friday also said that Bihar will not repose its trust in the RJD or the Congress as most of their top leaders are out on bail in alleged corruption cases. Alluding to the Yadav family in Bihar, the prime minister said: “The RJD family is the most corrupt one in Bihar. Most of its members are out on bail.” Similarly, alluding to the Gandhi family in the Congress, Modi said that it is the “most corrupt family in the country”. “Most of the members of this family too are on bail,” the prime minister said at another rally in Begusarai. “Bihar does not trust such people.” Modi also took a swipe at the uncertainty surrounding the Mahagathbandhan’s seat-sharing agreement. He alleged that the RJD, despite not winning any election the past two decades, ditched the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and the Congress. In the 2020 Assembly polls, the NDA and the Mahagathbandhan ended up with an identical vote share at 37.2%. However, the NDA returned to power in Bihar with a slender majority, winning 125 seats in the 243-member state Assembly. The Opposition bagged 110 seats. The RJD, led by Lalu Prasad Yadav, emerged as the single-largest party with 75 seats but still lost the election. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, which the Mahagathbandhan fought together, the RJD won four of the total 40 parliamentary constituencies, while the Congress clinched three and the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) managed to bag two seats. The NDA had won 30 seats.

US: Undocumented Indian immigrant kills three while allegedly driving under influence of drugs

A 21-year-old truck driver of Indian origin has been arrested in the United States’ California for allegedly killing three persons and injuring four others while driving a semitruck under the influence of drugs, reported AP. After Jashanpreet Singh was arrested for the accident, the Department of Homeland Security stated that he was an undocumented migrant in the US. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement lodged an arrest detainer for Singh. Singh was jailed after Tuesday night’s crash under charges of vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and driving under the influence causing injury. Dash camera footage of the accident showed the semitruck he was driving moving at a high speed and crashing into slow-moving traffic. This triggered a chain reaction-crash that affected eight cars. In August, another Indian truck driver who had illegally immigrated to the US killed three persons after he made an illegal U-turn in Florida. The Department of Homeland Security flagged another incident from earlier this month in Indiana, where an illegal immigrant from Serbia swerved into oncoming traffic and killed another driver. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday that the accidents follow a “disturbing pattern of these criminal illegal aliens being issued commercial vehicle licenses”. “And so yes, the Department of Transportation is absolutely cracking down on that,” she added. The Department of Homeland Security stated that the accidents directly threaten public safety. President Donald Trump, Homeland Security and the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement are “working day-in and day-out to make America’s roads safe again”, the statement added.
