Schools Closed Tomorrow For Chhath Puja 2025: Know State-Wise Closures on October 27

As people in North India began celebrations for Chhath Puja 2025, several state governments have announced school holidays for October 27 (Monday). The Chhath Puja is being celebrated across several states such as Delhi, Bihar, and West Bengal, and many of these states have announced school closures to facilitate celebrations. Chhath Puja is a major Hindu festival dedicated to the Sun God (Surya) and his consort Usha (Chhathi Maiya). It is mainly celebrated in the Indian states of Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh, and in Nepal’s Terai region, though devotees across India and abroad also observe it. Check where schools and colleges will remain closed on Monday: Delhi As per an announcement made by the Delhi Chief Minister (CM) Rekha Gupta, schools across Delhi will remain closed on October 27 in observance of the Chhath Puja festival. According to the notification released by the General Administration Department (GAD), the holiday has received formal approval from the Lieutenant Governor (LG) of Delhi. Bihar Since Chhath Puja is the main festival of the state of Bihar, all educational institutions in Bihar will stay shut until October 29 to mark Chhath Puja. The holiday period began on October 18, covering both Diwali and Chhath celebrations. Students have been given this weeks long holiday to ensure that they can enjoy the festival season without having to worry about attending classes. Uttar Pradesh All schools in Uttar Pradesh (UP) are expected to stay closed for Chhath Puja. Although the Uttar Pradesh state government is yet to release an official notification, schools in districts known for prominent Chhath Puja celebrations — such as Varanasi and Gorakhpur — are expected to observe holidays to celebrate the festival. A formal announcement from the government is awaited. West Bengal While West Bengal does not celebrate the festival of Chhath Puja on that scale, the East India state does celebrate Jagadhatri Puja around the same time. Jagadhatri Puja is a Hindu festival that celebrates Goddess Jagadhatri, a form of Goddess Durga symbolising divine power, protection, and patience. It falls on the Shukla Paksha Navami (ninth day of the bright fortnight) in the Bengali month of Kartik, usually in October or November, about a month after Durga Puja. It is especially grand in Chandannagar, Krishnanagar, and Murshidabad in West Bengal. Schools in the state will be closed on October 31 for the occasion. Additionally, closures are in effect on October 27 and 28 for Chhath Puja. Chhath Puja begins on the sixth day of the Kartik month, generally in October-November. Some people celebrate it in the month of Chaitra also (in April), which is called the Chaiti Chhath.
