Strictly star Gorka Marquez and fiancée Gemma Atkinson's adorable insight into parenting 'chaos'

After just a short time in their company, it's clear they're very different as people, but work perfectly together. Radio DJ Gemma Atkinson , 40, and pro dancer Gorka Márquez , 35, are an entertaining double act, with Gemma's straight-talking, northern humour and Gorka's quiet, laidback Spanish charm. The couple, who got engaged in 2021, are based in Manchester, but Gorka often travels for work - this year he's regularly in Spain, as a judge on the Spanish version of Strictly . The pair met when Gemma took part in Strictly in 2017. Their relationship was a slow burn, but they fell for each other and are now parents to two children, Mia, six, who was recently diagnosed with epilepsy , and two-year-old Thiago. Elements of navigating their daily lives often get lost in translation (hence the name of their new podcast, Lost In Translation), which makes for some hilarious moments. Here, they open up about working together, their little ones following in their footsteps and the habits that annoy each other... Hi, Gemma and Gorka! Are you glued to Strictly this year? Gemma: Every Saturday. It's the proper countdown to Christmas , for us. It's also a good excuse not have to go out on a Saturday night! Strictly got you two together, didn't it? Gorka: Oh, she really made me work for it, though! Gemma: Nothing good comes easy, as my mum would say. It's always nice to remember how it all started. Since my year on Strictly, I've been to watch the live shows twice, and as soon as I walk into Elstree I get such a warm feeling... Gorka: Where it began, me and you. Gemma: It's lovely. Seeing Aljaž [Škorjanec] and Janette [Manrara] with little Lyra-Rose , Neil Jones has Havana, and Dianne [Buswell] is going to have a little one... Gorka: It's crazy, when I first started on Strictly , Aljaž and Janette were about to get married, Neil joined with me. Dianne, who I also worked with on cruise ships, is about to have a family... Everyone's grown up. We used to go out after a show, now we've got to get home, so the next day we can have breakfast with our babies. Gemma, you almost didn't do Strictly - your life could look very different now... Gemma: Yes! At first, I said no. I was doing radio and it was the first job where I could commute in less than 40 minutes. I was getting to live life how I wanted. About two weeks later, my agent called me and was like, 'Hun, this Strictly thing, can you just think about it?' I was determined it was a no. I was going to Jason Vale's juice retreat and she said do a week there and think about it. So I did. What changed your mind? When I got to my room at the retreat, Oprah' s autobiography was on the side table. I picked it up and it fell open to a page with just one big quote, "If you have a chance to sit it out or dance, I hope you choose to dance." I thought, maybe I'm meant to do this. So I messaged my agent and said yes, I'll do it. Just don't ask me again or I'll change my mind! Wow, a real sliding doors moment then... Gemma: Gorks and I were in the same place at the same time a year earlier, too, but we didn't know it. We were in the Bahamas. I was on holiday and there's a bar, Señor Frog's, that looks out on to the sea. There's a video of me and my friend dancing there, the camera pans around and there's a cruise ship close to shore. Gorka: I was working on that ship, isn't that incredible? Can you tell us about your new podcast? Gemma: From our reality TV show, we had lovely feedback about how normal, mundane tasks and chaotic school runs could turn into something fun and relatable. So Lost In Translation is like an audio version of that. Each week, we each message our producer individually about what's annoyed us about each other and then have a debate about it. You also solve a listener's dilemma each week... Gemma: We do. The first was a listener called Sophie. She'd just moved in with her fella and was giving herself tummy pains as she was scared of doing a poo in the flat! We also have silly games and explore the differences between Spanish and English. How much chaos does that cultural mix bring? Gorka: It happens all the time. I used to say, "I'm wet p****d through," and Gemma would laugh and correct me, "No, Gork, it's I'm p****d wet through." Gemma: It's little things. For me, growing up, it was cheese pie or chippy tea with gravy every Friday. Vinegar on chips. Gorka is absolutely repulsed by this. Gorka: How can you eat a puff pastry pie with cheese?! Gemma: Thiago loves them, too. They're his favourite. Gorka: Gemma doesn't eat red meat, but at Christmas I bring a big Spanish leg of ham home. It's amazing, but Gemma's going, "Get that thing out of the house!" Are the kids learning Spanish? Gemma: Gorka does Spanish reading with Mia. His parents don't speak English, so when we FaceTime, his dad speaks Spanish and I'm there going, "Hola!", trying my hardest. It's different for children. Last time we went to Spain, Gorka's mum looked after the kids, so we could have a day in Madrid. I was worried, but we came back four hours later and they were dancing, laughing... Gorka: Language doesn't matter - they were having the time of their lives. What annoys you about each other? Gorka: I'm a perfectionist, everything has to be in its place, and Gemma's messy. Gemma: I've been folding socks wrong my whole life. I just fold them, done. Gorka likes them next to each other, the bottom to the top, tucked in completely. Do Mia and Thiago show signs of wanting to dance? Gemma: They've got musicality. Mia's obsessed with dancing. Thiago's got a good ear, he sings in tune already. He loves The Greatest Showman and bangs the drum at exactly the right times. Gorka: This morning we were playing music and they were dancing around the kitchen with me, it was so cute. I love those moments. Lost In Translation is available on the Rayo app, Apple,Amazon Music, Spotify or wherever you get your podcasts

Govt Planning Reforms For Print, TV Media Amid Rapid Digitisation: Union Minister Vaishnaw

The government has planned a series of initiatives to protect the conventional media from the disruptions expected due to rapid digitisation, said Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday. Vaishnaw said the government plans to remove the regulatory overhang in the radio industry and Television Rating Point (TRP) reforms. “We are working on multiple levels. The transition from conventional to new forms of media has to be handled carefully,” he told reporters. “It affects people’s livelihoods and the incomes of traditional news houses, whether TV, radio, or print. For example, in the radio industry, there is a significant regulatory burden. Today, it has shrunk to almost a negligible level. The government is working to remove regulatory barriers wherever they exist,” Vaishnaw was quoted as saying by The New Indian Express. He further informed that the ministry is looking into ways to enhance the television rating system to ensure that TV channels receive fair revenue from government advertisements. “TRP guidelines are being formulated. The first round of consultation is complete, feedback has been received, and a second consultation paper will be published soon.” Additionally, the government is also considering an increase in the advertisement rates for print and television media, along with the integration of the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI), Central Bureau of Communication (CBC), and Press Information Bureau (PIB) to improve coordination across media outreach and regulatory functions, said Vaishnaw. The minister said the PIB has intensified its outreach efforts, issuing backgrounders and research-based documents on key topics regularly. A chatbot for fact-checking is being developed for verifying the authenticity of videos and online content. The minister said these initiatives are part of a broader strategy to help traditional media adapt to the rapidly changing information landscape, aiming to maintain a balance between innovation and sustainability across the country’s media sector. Skipper Shubman Gill praises partnership of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for Sydney win

Sydney (Australia): Indian skipper Shubman Gill has praised the veteran batting duo of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, saying that watching the ball “fly off their bats” reflected how great a touch they are in. Rohit, Virat rolled back the clock after shaking off some rustiness and a lack of rhythm, as they put on an unbeaten 168-run partnership in India’s successful chase of 237 runs in the Sydney ODI. India won by nine wickets. Both batters unleashed some of their trademark shots in what could be their final outing in Australia, considering that the ODI team is not scheduled for another Aussie tour on the road to the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup. “It’s a treat to watch both of them, especially when they are batting like that and seeing the ball fly off their bats and just hearing the sound that comes off their bat is something that tells you how good of a nick they are both in,” Gill said in a the post match presentation. “Watching them from outside, having that partnership for them and taking the team through is something that we often talk about in team meetings, that whoever is set…even in the last match we spoke about, we got two-three good partnerships, but none of the batsmen could really play a longer inning, so I think they both spoke about whoever is set they should take the team through and they are walking the talk, so it is a great bonus for us,” he added. Following this series, Team India will play a three-match ODI series against South Africa from November 30. Another home ODI series against New Zealand will take place in January. The Vijay Hazare Trophy, starting from December 24 onwards, could give them some extra game time between these two ODI series. “I think till now there is no talk about this, but I think after the South Africa series, there will be a gap, there will be a gap till the New Zealand series, so I think then we will see how to keep the players in touch, so then I think a decision will be taken,” Gill said, when asked about keeping the two superstar batters in touch and complete rhythm. Coming to the match, Australia won the toss and opted to bat first. A 61-run stand between skipper Mitchell Marsh (41 in 50 balls, with five fours and a six) and Travis Head (29 in 25 balls, with six fours) started off things for Australia. Matt Short contributed a knock of 30 in 41 balls, with two fours, and a 59-run stand between Matt Renshaw (56 in 58 balls, with two fours) and Alex Carey (24 in 37 balls, with a four) took the Aussies to 183/3. But from there, Aussies collapsed to 236 all out in 46.4 overs, with Harshit Rana (4/39 in 8.4 overs), Washington Sundar (2/44) being the pick of the bowlers and Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav getting one each.In the 237 run-chase, India was off to a solid start with a 69-run opening stand between Shubman Gill (24 in 26 balls, with two fours and a six). From there, something happened that fans had waited for all series, as Rohit Sharma (121* in 125 balls, with 13 fours and three sixes) and Virat Kohli (74* in 81 balls, with seven fours) put on an unbeaten 168-run partnership and achieved several milestones, winning the match with nine wickets still in hand. Rohit won the ‘Player of the Match’ award and the ‘Player of the Series’ award as well for top-scoring in the series with 202 runs, including a century and a fifty each. Survey in Dharwad district: Target achieved in rural areas, challenges in urban

The Dharwad district administration has achieved 82% of the target given to it under the Karnataka Social and Educational Survey taken up by the Permanent Backward Classes Commission and data suggests that it has achieved the target in rural areas but has faced challenges in urban areas. According to available data the enumerators have not been able to get information from around 1.5 lakh households and with 3.8 being the size of an average family, an estimated 4.5 lakh people have not been covered under the survey in the district out of the projected number of 22.5 lakh people in the district. Speaking to The Hindu, Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad Divya Prabhu G.R.J. clarified that while 1.5 lakh households that have so far not been covered under the survey and the reasons for the non coverage were multiple. “It is not just reluctance or rejection to participate in the survey. There are other reasons as well. Enumerators have not been able to cover some houses that were locked and then there is the problem of people migrating to city on work but have their houses covered under the survey at their native places,” she said. Urban population She said that another challenge that the district faced was with regard to the highest urban population in the district. “Barring the State capital, Dharwad district has the highest urban population in the State. In most of the districts, the urban population is around 10%. Even Mysuru district has an urban population of 25% but in Dharwad district the urban population amounts to 55% of the total population of the district,” she said. She said because of the high urban population, the enumerators faced several changes because of which the percentage was less compared to rural areas, where they had achieved cent percent target. On reports about the district recording more number of rejections to take part in the survey, she declined to comment saying as authentic data on had not been made available to them yet by the State, it would be inaccurate to comment on it. However, she said that the district administration was carrying out extensive awareness on the mop up round and use of online portal to take part in the survey. The teachers had also been asked to identify school children left out from the survey, she said.

Harish facilitates return of 12 migrants from Jordan

Twelve migrant workers from Telangana, stranded in Jordan after going there for a better livelihood, returned to their native places on Saturday with the efforts of senior Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader T. Harish Rao Before heading to their native places they met Mr. Rao at his residence here and thanked him for helping them to return to the motherland after facing all sorts of troubles in Jordan. Mr. Rao enquired about the problems they faced on the foreign soil. The workers stated that they had made repeated appeals to all political parties in the State and pleaded for help, but it was only BRS that had responded and helped them reach back home. They got emotional while recollecting their ordeal in Jordan and explained that they were not able to have even a square meal on some days. Mr. Rao said the BRS had brought the issue to the notice of the State and Central governments immediately after learning about it and made repeated appeals, but in vain. They were allowed to return to their homeland only after a penalty was paid on their behalf. He stated that a large number of migrants from the State are going to Gulf countries to earn better livelihood and repay the debt made back home but are getting deceived at the hands of agents. He alleged that the Congress government had failed to keep the promises made even to migrant workers to establish a welfare board. Mr. Rao bore the return airfare of all the 12 workers.
