UK's biggest Christmas market will face travel chaos with 'widespread cancellations' and delays

UK's biggest Christmas market will face travel chaos with 'widespread cancellations' and delays READ MORE: Revealed: The town with magical Christmas market and 'cheapest flights' in 2025 By MARTI STELLING, REPORTER Published: 10:41 GMT, 29 October 2025 | Updated: 10:41 GMT, 29 October 2025 With more than 200 stalls spread across nine locations, this city's annual Christmas markets transform the area into a festive wonderland. Since 1999, Manchester has welcomed more than 9 million visitors every year during its six-week festive stint in the city centre. It often tops the charts as the largest festive market in the UK, alongside Birmingham, Edinburgh and Hyde Park Winter Wonderland. Aside from an amusing glitch on the Visit Manchester website, which reads '0 of 0 things to do in Manchester' on TripAdvisor, it is the highlight of the year for many locals and tourists alike. And as the festive season approaches, millions of visitors will be using the city's trams to visit the famous market, which is expected to run from November 7 until December 22. But a union representing tram drivers has warned of tram chaos as drivers are balloted on strikes. Manchester's tram system, Metrolink, is the UK's largest light rail network, connecting numerous areas of Greater Manchester with eight lines and 99 stops. Last year, the tram service recorded 45million journeys. Some 320 Unite members are eligible to vote in the ballot, which ends on 11 November, in a dispute over working conditions. Since 1999, Manchester has welcomed more than 9million visitors every year during its six-week festive stint in the city centre Manchester's tram system, Metrolink, is the UK's largest light rail network, connecting numerous areas of Greater Manchester with eight lines and 99 stops. Last year, the tram service recorded 45million journeys Those affected work for KeolisAmey Metrolink (KAM) at the Warwick Road South and Queens Road depots and operate trams on all routes in Greater Manchester. Currently, the drivers’ shift patterns mean they have to work 450 hours over a 12-week period. This results in some drivers working 50 hours on, followed by just two days off, then back into another 50-hour work pattern. Unite regional officer Colin Hayden said: 'Any strike action will cause a great deal of disruption but it is entirely the fault of Metrolink, which is not taking the issue of driver fatigue seriously. 'It is dangerous for fatigued workers to be driving trams and they should not be put in this situation. We are demanding that Metrolink and Transport for Greater Manchester work with Unite to find a solution to this problem to avoid industrial action.' It comes as Christmas markets across the country, including Manchester, have faced criticism in recent years for the quality of goods on offer and rising prices due to the cost-of-living crisis. Last year, the Daily Mail reported visitors to London's Winter Wonderland could expect to pay £12 for a pint of beer. In the historic city of York with its narrow, cobbled streets, overcrowding is an issue during the festive season. Albert Square in Manchester is pictured during the Christmas Markets season In a Reddit post under the channel r/Manchester, a user claimed that last year, stallholders at Manchester Christmas Markets were calling it the ‘worst one ever’. The top comment, which has been upvoted more than 1,000 times, reads: 'It’s almost like there’s an upper limit to what we will pay for substandard food and drink.' 'It's exactly the same carbon copy market every year, wherever you go. I've eaten from exactly the same German sausage stall in Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle,' wrote another. The Daily Mail has reached out to Manchester City Council for comment. Maha State Manufacturing Mission will be launched on lines of National Manufacturing Mission: CM Fadnavis

Pune, Oct 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday announced that the state government will launch Maharashtra State Manufacturing Mission on the lines of the Centre’s National Manufacturing Mission. He also declared that a world-class ‘Global Frontier Technology Institute’ will be established in the state. He was speaking at the ‘The Road to India AI Impact Summit 2026’ conference organised by NITI Aayog on the topic 'Reimagining Manufacturing: India's Roadmap to Global Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing.’ Fadnavis further stated that Maharashtra will lead the country in the field of advanced manufacturing, for which the state's manufacturing mission will be launched. The state has prepared a Viksit Maharashtra 2047 vision, and transformation in the manufacturing sector is also a part of it. “Advanced manufacturing will be promoted, and due to this, a major transformation will be seen in this sector. While attracting other countries to India, necessary facilities will have to be created for this. By doing so, we can attract those with excellent and creative intelligence. Maharashtra has formed a task force under Ease of Doing Business and has decided to make 100 improvements under it,” he added. The Chief Minister said that Maharashtra has become the data centre capital of the country, adding that Pune is a city of manufacturing and technology. “The state government has decided to create a quantum corridor between Pune and Mumbai. Navi Mumbai is a data centre city, and an innovation city is going to be built between Pune and Mumbai. EduCity is also being established, and 12 best global universities will be included in it, out of which 7 universities have come,” he said. The Chief Minister said that while keeping Maharashtra at the forefront in the manufacturing sector, India will be made a global hub of advanced manufacturing. Thanking the NITI Aayog for publishing a roadmap for the manufacturing sector in Pune, the Chief Minister said that Pune is witnessing advanced technology in this sector. “We will have to move forward with new thinking for the development of the manufacturing sector. Frontier technology is necessary for that. It is necessary to strengthen our position in the global competition with new technology and also face a new revolution,” he said. The Chief Minister added that today, the three pillars of AI, quantum computing and semiconductors have greatly affected every sector. NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subramaniyam said that no country can develop without the manufacturing sector, saying that there are many changes happening in this sector in the world. “Maharashtra is ahead in the country in terms of Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP). However, continuous work is required to remain ahead. Pune has great importance in the manufacturing sector,” he said. Subramaniyam said that in the last annual budget, it was announced to launch the 'National Manufacturing Mission', adding that work is underway in line with that, and it will be launched soon. “The emphasis will be on bringing the same transformation in our country as other advanced countries have brought about in the manufacturing sector,” he added. Subramaniyam said that Pune has a good ecosystem for the manufacturing sector, and Pune is a leader in many sectors, like the automobile industry and, information technology industry. He appealed to the state government to also start the state's manufacturing mission, and for this, Pune should become a centre of frontier technology. He expressed expectations that Frontier Tech Industrial Park and residential complexes for workers should also be set up. Source: IANS

Delhi HC quashes 2008 FIR against activist Prof. Madhu Kishwar

New Delhi, Oct 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) The Delhi High Court has quashed a 17-year-old attempt to murder case lodged against social activist and academic Prof. Madhu Kishwar, observing that the FIR appeared to be a “maliciously motivated counterblast” to an earlier case that had resulted in the complainant’s conviction. Allowing the petition filed by Prof. Kishwar under Section 482 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), a single-judge Bench of Justice Amit Mahajan held that continuing the criminal proceedings registered at K.M. Pur Police Station for offences under Sections 307, 323, 506, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code would amount to “an abuse of the process of the court.” Justice Mahajan observed that the 2008 FIR filed by the complainant was a retaliatory move against an earlier case lodged by Prof. Kishwar, which arose from the same incident on December 31, 2007. “The subject FIR appears to be in the nature of defence and a maliciously motivated counterblast to FIR No. 666/2007 for wreaking vengeance upon the petitioner,” noted the Delhi High Court. It further emphasised that the complainant in the present case had already been convicted in 2019 in connection with the same altercation. The trial court had found that the complainant and her associates had formed an “unlawful assembly” and assaulted Prof. Kishwar and her driver, Sheeshpal, when they were documenting illegal encroachments in the area. It recorded that tangible evidence had been produced showing the complainant’s involvement in violent conduct and said, “There is evidence to show that each of the accused persons, including Respondent No. 4, actively participated in the use of criminal force against the petitioner, with an object to prevent the petitioner from clicking photographs and from obstructing the accused persons’ illegal encroachment.” The trial court had concluded that the accused persons’ acts amounted to rioting and assault, with the medical evidence corroborating the injuries sustained by the victims. In light of the above findings, the Delhi High Court held that reviving or continuing the 2008 proceedings would serve no legitimate legal purpose. “In such a factual background, setting the criminal law machinery in motion only for the reason that the complaint discloses commission of a cognizable offence would be an abuse of the process of the court,” Justice Mahajan observed. He further added: “Even if the allegations of the complainant are taken at the highest, considering the complainant’s conviction in a case arising out of the same incident, the same can at best be considered as self-defence or an altercation at the stage when the complainant has formed an unlawful assembly and caused injuries to the petitioner and another person when they were carrying out certain functions assigned to them.” The Delhi High Court, relying on several landmark Supreme Court judgments, concluded: “In view of the above, the present petition is allowed. Accordingly, FIR 162/2008 and all consequential proceedings arising therefrom are quashed.” Source: IANS

‘If it’s in his fate…’: D.K Suresh on brother Shivakumar’s prospects of becoming Karnataka CM

Bengaluru, Oct 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) Amid the ongoing leadership row in Karnataka's ruling Congress, former Congress MP D.K. Suresh, the younger brother of Deputy Chief Minister and state party President D.K. Shivakumar, on Wednesday said that his brother will become the Chief Minister if that is in his fate. "Even I wish to see my brother Shivakumar as the Chief Minister. If it is written in his fate, he will become the CM. It is not possible to make everyone happy all the time," Suresh told media persons here. Reacting to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s statement in a television interview expressing his desire to lead the party in the next Assembly elections, he said: "Leaders aged 95 years and 98 years are still active in politics. Considering that, there is nothing wrong if Siddaramaiah contests the 2028 election. The next election will be fought under his leadership, and he is our leader." Asked about reports of a “November Revolution” within the ruling Congress, Suresh said: "I have no information about any November Revolution. The Congress party has received a mandate from the people to govern for five years. Including independents, the party currently has the support of 140 MLAs in the state Assembly. What is important now is to fulfil the assurances given to the people." He added that the party and government are functioning unitedly and that there is no confusion in governance. On AHINDA leaders organising conventions and Shivakumar’s busy schedule with party work, Suresh said: "Shivakumar is the state President of the party. It is his duty to take everyone along and treat them equally. He must also ensure that the party’s interests are not harmed in any way, and he is conducting himself accordingly." "Shivakumar will always abide by the decisions of the party," he emphasised. On any power-sharing deal and a possible cabinet reshuffle, Suresh said: "AICC leaders, the Chief Minister, and the Deputy Chief Minister will have to answer that. There is nothing to worry about. If it is in his fate, he (Shivakumar) will become the CM; otherwise, it’s okay.". Responding to a question about efforts to secure the CM’s post for his brother, he clarified: "There are no such efforts. Shivakumar is the party president and also the Deputy Chief Minister. He will always uphold the interests of the party." Asked whether Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is indispensable for the state Congress, Suresh said: "He has all the qualities of a leader. He appears healthy and is travelling across the state, ensuring good administration. It would not be wrong if we face the next election under his leadership." "My statements regarding the leadership issue are irrelevant. The high command and party leadership will take the final decision," he reiterated. Source: IANS

Rain washes out first India-Australia T20I in Canberra

Canberra, Oct 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) Rain had the final say at the Manuka Oval in the Australian Capital Territory of Canberra, forcing the first T20I between India and Australia to be called off after persistent showers interrupted play twice on Wednesday. India had a promising outing with the bat before the weather intervened, racing to 97 for 1 in 9.4 overs when the match was abandoned. Under gloomy skies in the Australian capital, home skipper Mitchell Marsh won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Indian openers, Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill, gave the visitors a solid start, adding 35 runs for the first wicket before Nathan Ellis removed the left-hander. Suryakumar Yadav then walked in and made an immediate impact, beginning his innings with a trademark whip over deep backward square leg — a shot that also brought up his 150th six in T20 internationals. The game was halted for around 40 minutes after five overs due to rain, and play resumed with the contest reduced to 18 overs per side. Once back, both Suryakumar and Gill found their rhythm, stitching together a brisk 62-run stand off 35 balls. The duo struck some crisp boundaries and began accelerating before another spell of rain ended any hopes of further play. At the time of the second interruption, Suryakumar was unbeaten on 39 and Gill on 37, guiding India to 97/1 in 9.4 overs. Despite the limited action, India’s top order looked in fine touch, setting a positive tone before the rain washed it all away. Much like the ODI series, which was also affected by weather, this T20 leg began on a damp note. “At least in Perth, we got a result. No such luck today,” the broadcasters summed up the mood as fans left disappointed. The focus now shifts to the second T20I in Melbourne on Friday — though forecasts there too hint at possible showers. Meanwhile, the BCCI confirmed that all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out of the first three T20Is due to fitness concerns. “Nitish Kumar Reddy has been ruled out for the first three T20Is. The all-rounder, who was recovering from his left quadriceps injury sustained during the second ODI in Adelaide, complained of neck spasms, which have impacted his recovery and mobility. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress,” the board said in an updated statement. Source: IANS

MP: Bajrang Dal activist murder sparks tension, two arrested

Jabalpur, Oct 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) The broad daylight killing of a Bajrang Dal activist, Nilesh Rajak and then the alleged suicide of the father of one of the suspected assailants has sparked tension in Madhya Pradesh's Katni, prompting the administration to issue prohibitory orders to bring the situation under control. 35-year-old Bajrang Dal activist Nilesh Rajak, who was a former ‘Gau Seva Pramukh (Cow Protection Chief) of Katni district, was allegedly shot dead by two unidentified men when he was reportedly standing near a bank in Vijayraghogarh area on Wednesday. Two suspects involved in the alleged murder of Rajak have been arrested following a police encounter early on Wednesday and are being interrogated by senior police officials. Arrested persons have been identified as Akram Khan and Prince Joseph, according to police. In a shocking turn of events, the father of one of the suspects also died by alleged suicide, deepening the mystery of the horrific incident. The Minister in charge of Katni district, Uaday Pratap Singh, who is the School Education Minister in the state, reached Katni and met the senior officials. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav, who was in Bihar, wrote on X that he has directed Katni district administration and police to take tough action against those involved in taking law and order into their hands. "In a meeting held recently, I had given clear instructions that no criminal should be spared. There will be no compromise with the law and order in the state," Chief Minister wrote in X, adding that, "I have instructed Katni district police to take strict action against those involved in the matter." The killing led to panic in the locality. Police teams and senior officers immediately rushed to the spot. Forensic experts collected the spent shells and tyre marks from the scene, while CCTV footage from nearby shops was being scanned to identify the shooters. The murder took place around 10.30 am in the Kaimor police station area in Vijayraghogarh town on Wednesday. The local police station in charge and a head constable were removed from active duty in the wake of the killing. Source: IANS

Hurricane Melissa hits Cuba hours after devastating Jamaica

Hurricane Melissa hits Cuba hours after devastating Jamaica

HAVANA/KINGSTON, (Reuters) – Hurricane Melissa slammed into Cuba early on Wednesday, hours after causing devastation in neighboring Jamaica as the strongest-ever storm on record to hit that Caribbean island nation. Melissa hit the southern coast of eastern Cuba with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph (195 kph), the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC) said. “Life-threatening storm surge, flash flooding and landslides, and damaging hurricane winds are ongoing this morning,” the center said. Around 735,000 people were evacuated from their homes in eastern Cuba as the storm approached, authorities said. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel warned on Tuesday the storm would cause “significant damage” and urged people to heed evacuation orders. Melissa had weakened to a still dangerous Category 3 hurricane after roaring ashore near Jamaica’s southwestern town of New Hope on Tuesday packing sustained winds of up to 185 mph, well above the 157 mph threshold for Category 5, the highest level on the Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale. ‘SOME LOSS OF LIFE EXPECTED,’ JAMAICAN LEADER SAYS In southwestern Jamaica, the parish of St. Elizabeth was left “underwater,” an official said, with more than 500,000 residents without power. “The reports that we have had so far would include damage to hospitals, significant damage to residential property, housing and commercial property as well, and damage to our road infrastructure,” Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness said on CNN after the storm had passed. Holness said the government had not received news of any confirmed deaths from the storm, but given the strength of the hurricane and the extent of the damage, “we are expecting that there would be some loss of life.” As daylight returned to Jamaica early on Wednesday, eyewitness reports and videos on social media showed swaths of downed trees, washed-out roads and roofs tossed about fields and roadways. Video of the airport in Montego Bay showed inundated seating areas, broken glass and collapsed ceilings. Meteorologists at AccuWeather said Melissa ranked as the third most intense hurricane observed in the Caribbean, after Wilma in 2005 and Gilbert in 1988 – the last major storm to make landfall in Jamaica. Scientists say hurricanes are intensifying faster with greater frequency as a result of warming ocean waters caused by greenhouse gas emissions. Many Caribbean leaders have called on wealthy, heavy-polluting nations to provide reparations in the form of aid or debt relief to tropical island countries. Melissa’s winds subsided as the storm drifted past the mountains of Jamaica, lashing highland communities vulnerable to landslides and flooding. Local media reported at least three deaths in Jamaica during storm preparations, and a disaster coordinator suffered a stroke at the onset of the storm and was rushed to hospital. Late on Tuesday, many areas remained cut off. “Our country has been ravaged by Hurricane Melissa but we will rebuild and we will do so even better than before,” Prime Minister Holness said early on Wednesday. In the Bahamas, next after Cuba in Melissa’s path to the northeast, the government ordered evacuations of residents in southern portions of that archipelago. Farther to the east, the island shared by Haiti and the Dominican Republic had faced days of torrential downpours leading to at least four deaths, authorities there said. CUBA BRACES The storm’s center, churning with violent wind gusts over 125 mph and heavy rain, slammed into Guama, a rural, mountainous area 25 miles west of Santiago de Cuba, the island’s second most populous city. Authorities had shut down power to virtually all of eastern Cuba, evacuated vulnerable areas and had asked residents to shelter in place in the provincial capital Santiago, a city of 400,000 people. Scarce videos posted by local media showed torrents of brown rainwater rushing down roads through dark towns at the base of Cuba’s Sierra Maestra mountains not far from the city. Authorities reported widespread flooding of lowland areas early on Wednesday from Santiago to Guantanamo, where upwards of 35% of the population had been evacuated. The timing could not be worse for the communist-run Caribbean island. Cuba is already suffering from food, fuel, electricity and medicine shortages that have complicated life for many, prompting record-breaking migration off the island since 2021. President Diaz-Canel said Cuba had nonetheless mobilized 2,500 electric line workers to begin recovery immediately following the storm’s passage across the island later on Wednesday. The hurricane was not expected to directly affect the capital Havana.

Women’s WC: Shafali can’t afford to think about pressure, she’s to go with mindset of making a difference: Ian Bishop

Navi Mumbai, Oct 29 (SocialNews.XYZ) Former West Indies’ fast bowler Ian Bishop has urged Shafali Varma to seize an unexpected opportunity and make a decisive impact for India in their 2025 Women’s ODI World Cup semi-final against Australia, to be played at the DY Patil Stadium on Thursday. India suffered a big blow when in-form opener Pratika Rawal was ruled out of the semi-final clash against Australia due to ankle and knee injuries suffered while fielding in the league match against Bangladesh, which was eventually washed out due to rain. Pratika’s injury-enforced absence has meant that Shafali, who hasn’t played an ODI in nearly a year, was drafted into the Indian World Cup squad. Shafali is coming off playing Senior Women’s T20 Trophy games for Haryana and had made a brisk 70 off 49 deliveries in a four-wicket win (via DLS method) for India A over New Zealand in a World Cup warm-up match at the BCCI Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru. "That won't be easy. Look, again, it comes down to hoping that she's been working on her game. Obviously, her run of form in recent times internationally hasn't been great. However, it is a one-off game, and she has to come in with this mindset - I've been given an opportunity here that I probably didn't think would happen, or I could not predict it into a semi-final, which, apart from the final, is going to be the highest pressure in or the highest expectation in the World Cup. "She can't afford to think about pressure, though. She has to come in with this mindset. I got this opportunity to make a difference, to make a difference for this team and perhaps for this country. I'll try to remain as relaxed as possible, but I'm going to make the most of this opportunity and fill the void adequately. So that's the mindset, and the execution of course has to be built up in her practice sessions leading into this game," Bishop told reporters during a JioStar Media Day on the eve of the India-Australia semi-final clash. He also acknowledged that replacing Pratika, who scored a hundred in India’s crucial win over New Zealand, represents a significant blow to the hosts’ aiming to win an ODI World Cup for the first time. "Those are never easy questions to fill the void because Pratika, with that hundred in her last performance when she batted, looked in good touch. It was sort of a landmark achievement in many ways, the way that she played. She also bowled a few overs. So that's a significant blow. But within the team, it has to be next player up. "Whether they go with Shafali, whose record against Australia isn't outstanding. I think she has one half-century, but she's been playing some T20 cricket. Do they bank on the fact that she's been scoring runs in that T20 tournament recently? That's a decision that the team will have to make," he added. Bishop insisted India cannot afford to let Pratika's absence dampen the team morale. "So, look, I don't think it's an easy thing, but you cannot dwell on the fact that Pratika is not there and let that be a downer on the team. Next player up, come in and make an impact, because this is a World Cup semi-final and it's all on the line.” “So that's the mindset. It's something that the Australians do very well in that if Alyssa Healy is injured, Georgia Voll comes in. Then someone comes in and steps into that void with a great deal of confidence given to them by the backroom staff,” he said. Bishop also opined that India will be better off having an extra bowling option in their playing eleven against Australia's formidable batting line-up on a red soil Navi Mumbai pitch. "I believe I would like for India to have that extra bowling depth and allow the batters to take responsibility, whoever that combination is. With the bowling and batting depth of Australia, I would want to have that extra bowling combination." He also floated an intriguing tactical suggestion: promoting Harleen Deol to open the batting, which would enable India to field an extra bowler. "That was one of the things that I was playing around in my mind in Harleen going up to the top, and she likes pace on the ball. It will give her a chance, an opportunity to be fluent within that power play and play that extra bowler.” “That's a way to accommodate the extra bowler and allowing Harmanpreet to have options. Because Australia, I'm telling you, you go in with five specialist bowlers and Australia are going to look to target even harder one or two of those to put pressure on India so that Harmanpreet then has to go, whether it's towards herself for some part-time bowling. “So again, that's my thing. I like the comfort of knowing I have an all-rounder who can give me some runs if called upon but who can also give me some specialist bowling," he concluded. From the Negotiation Environment in Turkey

According to credible sources, the negotiations held in Turkey between the delegations of Pakistan and Afghanistan concluded without achieving any tangible outcome. What stood out most was that the Pakistani delegation seemed ill-prepared and unfamiliar with the norms of formal negotiation. Their discussions were often unfocused and, at times, marked by disrespectful conduct and inappropriate language. Even the mediators—representatives from Qatar and Turkey—were reportedly astonished by the Pakistani team’s demeanor, attitude, and lack of diplomatic discipline. In informal exchanges, they confided to the Afghan delegation that “you are indeed dealing with very bad neighbor.” Below are several key points from the proceedings of the Turkey talks, as obtained from reliable and independent sources: • All agenda items had been finalized except for one, which remained under discussion. It was during deliberations on this final point that the Pakistani side, through rude and improper behavior, disrupted and derailed the meeting. • The Pakistani delegation appeared to have completely lost its composure and diplomatic decorum at the negotiating table. Their use of disparaging language and unprofessional tone deeply upset the mediators from Turkey and Qatar. • The head of the Pakistani delegation, who reportedly behaved very poorly, demanded that the Afghan side summon to its territory and assume control over all groups responsible for attacks in Pakistan.” This demand—that Afghanistan should call back and control TTP—astonished the mediators. They questioned how a state could reasonably expect another sovereign government to take responsibility for insurgent groups that are, in fact, its own nationals? The Afghan delegation responded: Those individuals are not affiliated with us; they are citizens of your country. How can we summon your nationals and militant groups into our territory and assume responsibility for them? • Another demand from Pakistan was that if the TTP carries out any attack inside Pakistan, they would take revenge from Afghanistan. The Afghan delegation replied that security incidents inside Pakistan are the responsibility of its own military and law enforcement institutions. Afghanistan, they emphasized, is committed only to ensuring that no attacks are launched against Pakistan from Afghan soil. • The Pakistani side asked for guarantees that Afghanistan would control all groups that organize attacks from Afghan soil into Pakistan. The Afghan delegation agreed in principle, stating: We will not allow anyone to use our soil to attack Pakistan. However, in return, Pakistan must also provide assurances that it will not violate Afghanistan’s airspace, nor permit U.S. drone aircraft to operate from its territory and airspace in violation of Afghan sovereignty. Furthermore, Daesh operating from Pakistani territory must not carry out attacks inside Afghanistan. Initially, the Pakistani delegation accepted this reciprocal arrangement. However, after receiving a phone call during the session, they reversed their position upon returning to the table, claiming that Pakistan could not prevent U.S. drone operations nor provide guarantees regarding Daesh activities. • Another noteworthy moment occurred when the Afghan delegation raised concerns over the use of Pakistani airspace by U.S. drones. The head of the Pakistani delegation, General Shahab Aslam, abruptly interjected, saying, “This issue should not be discussed.” At this point, the Qatari Ambassador to Afghanistan, Mr. Mirdaf—who was present as a mediator—intervened, saying: “General, please allow the discussion to continue. This is a legitimate Afghan concern.” General Shahab responded: The American drones that enter Afghanistan through our airspace take off from your base in Qatar—why don’t you stop them there? The Qatari ambassador calmly replied: We have an agreement with the United States in this regard. General Shahab countered: “So do we,” (implicitly confirming that Pakistan has a similar understanding with the United States allowing drone flights that violate Afghan airspace). For now, the negotiation process has been suspended. Readers may draw their own conclusions from these accounts—determining who is truly responsible for muddying the waters and then attempting to fish in them. DAERA confirms brucellosis compensation rates for November

The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has published the brucellosis compensation rates for Northern Ireland for November 2025. The department said that the compensation payable, for reactors and negative in contacts for which notice of intended slaughter is issued in November 2025 will be either: 75% of the animal’s market value or 75% of £3,504 (75% of £3,804 in the case of pedigree animals) The herdowner will receive whichever is the lesser payment applicable to them. Brucellosis Brucellosis is a highly contagious disease of cattle caused by a bacterium which spreads as result of animals coming into contact with infected female cattle, aborted foetuses or discharged placental tissues and fluids. According to DAERA, the disease can lead to an abortion storm in infected females and if it becomes established can lead to decreased milk yields, infertility, weak calves and serious financial loss. The department added that the disease is particularly dangerous to humans who come into contact with infected animals or material. Over the past 50 years, DAERA has undertaken a programme of compulsory testing of all breeding bovine animals, the removal and slaughter of infected and in-contact animals, the imposition of movement restrictions and follow-up testing on herds thought to be at risk. Female cattle and bulls over 24 months-of-age are eligible for testing at routine brucellosis blood tests. Cattle do not currently require a brucellosis pre-movement test. Farmers are compensated for losses in respect of animals slaughtered under the department's brucellosis prevention and eradication control programme. For both reactors and in contact animals, 75% of the animal’s market value based on an individual valuation or on an average of market prices (whichever is the lesser) is paid. Valuations are carried out by a DAERA livestock valuation officer and, in the case of a disagreement over the DAERA valuation, on a second individual valuation carried out by an independent valuer.

Zamfara PDP Unshaken Regardless Of Defections, Says Chieftain

News Investigators/ The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Zamfara Chapter, says it remains unshaken in spite of defections from the party to All Progressives Congress (APC). This is contained in a statement issued on Wednesday in Gusau by Halliru Andi, the Publicity Secretary of the party. While the PDP is the ruling party in the state, APC holds sway at the federal level. The party was reacting to the defection of Maharazu Faru, representing Maradun II constituency in the State House of Assembly. Mr Faru, who joined the APC together with PDP executives in the five wards among others, hinged his defection on Gov. Dauda Lawal’s inability to meet his campaign promises. “Dauda failed to address challenges ranging from insecurity which is the main reason people voted for him,” the lawmaker said. However, the PDP said it was not perturbed by Faru’s excuses for his action. “The PDP under the able leadership of Dr Jamil Jibo Magayaki has noted the defection of Hon. Marahazu Faru, member representing Maradun II Constituency in the State House of Assembly, to the All Progressives Congress (APC). “While we respect his personal choice, we are not surprised. “History has shown that those who put personal interest above the collective will of the people often find themselves on the wrong side of history. “The PDP remains the only party with genuine commitment to the rescue and rebuilding of Zamfara State,” he said. He said Gov. Dauda Lawal’s leadership was steadily restoring hope, rebuilding institutions, and securing the lives and livelihoods of the Zamfara people. “The ongoing reforms and development initiatives are clear proof that the PDP is the party of progress and compassion. “We are confident that Hon. Faru will soon regret his decision, as the people of Zamfara have already made up their minds to stand firmly with the PDP. “Come the next elections, our party will win overwhelmingly at all levels —from the wards to the national stage because the PDP remains the true party of the masses. “We call on our members and supporters to remain steadfast and proud. No defection can shake our foundation or stop the will of the people. “The PDP remains strong, united, and deeply rooted in the hearts of Zamfara people,” the statement said. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the PDP still maintains majority with 14 members while the APC now has 10 lawmakers in the State House of Assembly.
