Mahama and Macron engage in discussions to enhance maritime security in Ghana

President John Dramani Mahama and French President Emmanuel Macron engaged in comprehensive bilateral discussions at the Élysée Palace on Thursday, October 30, focusing on security collaboration, economic growth, and regional stability during the 2025 Paris Peace Forum. The meeting commenced on a serious note, with President Macron expressing condolences for the recent death of Ghana’s former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman Rawlings. Both leaders commended the Paris Peace Initiative and the enhancement of ties between Ghana and France. A significant aspect of the discussions was Ghana’s appeal for French support in addressing piracy within its territorial waters. President Mahama sought assistance to safeguard Ghana’s maritime integrity against the rising threats of piracy in the Gulf of Guinea. The two leaders also deliberated on a French concessionary loan intended for Ghana’s health sector, which is pending parliamentary approval. President Mahama urged his French counterpart to leverage his influence with the International Monetary Fund to facilitate Ghana’s access to funding from the French Development Bank, highlighting Ghana’s improved debt-to-GDP ratio. In his role as the African Union (AU) Champion of African Financial Institutions, President Mahama advocated for cooperation to renegotiate loan agreements with reduced interest rates for infrastructure initiatives. He underscored Ghana’s position as the host of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) secretariat and the necessity for improved road infrastructure to promote intra-African trade. President Mahama also highlighted Ghana’s ambitious one-million-coders initiative, which has already enrolled 200,000 students. He requested French assistance in training more French language educators to enhance language instruction in Ghanaian schools. President Macron highlighted several forthcoming opportunities for collaboration, including the VivaTech Summit in Nairobi scheduled for May 2026, where Ghana could present its digital innovation capabilities, the African Union-European Union summit in Angola, and the G7 summit in June 2026, during which France would advocate for enhanced support for Ghana. President Mahama brought up the issue of reparations for slavery, a cause that Ghana is currently championing. President Macron expressed his support for this initiative, pointing out that France has criminalized slavery, while also cautioning that the reparations discourse should recognize the involvement of various parties beyond just Western powers. The leaders addressed the worsening security situation in the Sahel region, particularly the terrorist incursions affecting Mali and other nations within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). President Macron praised President Mahama’s leadership in the subregion and acknowledged Ghana’s economic reforms, committing to ongoing French support for Ghana’s development agenda. First-time offenders caught by e-ticketing system can have fines waived after apology: Sindh CM

Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said on Wednesday that first-time offenders caught by the newly implemented traffic e-ticketing system can have their fines waived within 10 days by appearing in person and submitting an apology, according to a press release. The CM inaugurated the Traffic Regulation and Citation System (TRACS), commonly known as the e-ticketing system, at the Central Police Office (CPO) on Monday. He explained that the new system replaces the outdated manual ticketing process with a fully automated e-ticketing mechanism, utilising advanced AI-integrated CCTV cameras to detect violations such as speeding, red-light jumping, and helmet non-compliance. According to the press release, CM Shah received a report from Sindh Inspector General of Police Ghulam Nabi Memon detailing traffic rule violations under the new system, which has issued fines to 35 official vehicles for various infractions. “According to the report, e-challans were issued for offences such as not wearing seatbelts, running red lights, using tinted windows, and operating mobile phones while driving,” the press release stated. The report revealed that a police vehicle was fined for a seatbelt violation on the Lyari Expressway at 1:36pm on Tuesday. Traffic Deputy Inspector General Peer Muhammad Shah informed the chief minister that the vehicle’s driver was twice observed not wearing a seatbelt between Garden and Lyari Expressway, triggering the automated system to issue a Rs10,000 fine, according to the press release. “The CM said that first-time offenders can have their fines waived within 10 days by appearing in person and submitting an apology,” the press release stated. “Even the police must comply with traffic regulations. This system upholds fairness and accountability for all citizens,” CM Shah was quoted as saying. The press release added the provincial chief executive underlined the importance of traffic law compliance for public safety and directed that while first-time offenders can have their challans waived, repeat offenders would pay fines without exception. “All citizens have equal rights under the law — compliance must be ensured across the board,” CM Shah added. On Tuesday, more than 2,650 electronic challans were issued by the Karachi Traffic Police following the inauguration of the new e-ticketing system. According to the Sindh police, 1,535 challans were issued for not wearing a seat belt, 507 challans for riding a motorcycle without a helmet, 419 for speeding, 166 for running a red light, and 32 for using a mobile phone while driving. Additionally, seven challans were issued for putting tints on vehicle windows, five challans each for improper parking and parking in a no-parking zone, four for stop line violation, and three each for lane line violation and driving on the wrong way. In June, the Sindh government decided that e-challans for traffic violations would be delivered to vehicle owners’ registered home addresses. Vehicles with unpaid fines would not be allowed to be sold or transferred. The decision came amid Karachi witnessing a surge in traffic accidents, particularly involving dumpers and water tankers, that killed nearly 500 people and injured 4,879 in 2024, according to hospital data. The spate of deadly incidents triggered protests over citizens’ deaths, prompting the provincial government to ban heavy vehicles during daytime hours and require them to obtain fitness certificates.

Celia Imrie's courageous move on Celebrity Traitors 'could see her win the series'

Celebrity Traitors star Celia Imrie has been branded the as a 'perfect' Miss Marple of the series, following the latest episode where the Faithfuls finally caught out Traitor Jonathan Ross. While Celia previously admitted that she has "a bit of a crush" on Jonathan, she didn’t let that cloud her judgment as she voted for Jonathan on several occasions before her fellow Faithfuls joined together to vote him out for good. Celia was also praised by body language expert Judi James, who labelled the actress the ‘leader of the Faithfuls’ and said she can do something ‘most people lack the courage to do’. Judi told Paddy Power Bingo: “Celia is a delight for so many reasons, notably her one-liners and her apparent lack of deception and her fearlessness. She will front people out and her fronting out of Alan saw him squirming for real, mainly because she does something most people lack the courage to do when confronting others, which is to sustain the scrutiny.” She added: “Celia has become the leader of the Faithfuls, possibly without realising it. She is the perfect Miss Marple on the show, but she has a non-verbal trait that most actors in a role lack, which will help her popularity with the viewers.” Judi added that ‘Celia’s facial muscles and her lines’ pull perfectly into ‘all the personality traits she is showing on this show’. “She has achieved the state of appearing to ‘be herself’ but to still be wildly entertaining, theatrical, and engaging. Her congruence is probably why she should win this competition.” It comes as Jonathan's reign as lead Traitor has ended after he was voted out by not only the Faithfuls but his fellow Traitors, Cat Burns and Alan Carr. Jonathan was a Traitor on the series from the very first episode but it took the Faithfuls quite some time to find him out. The presenter made a shocking exit speech where he tried to convince everyone he was Faithful until the end. However, he then lifted the veil and revealed the real truth. The star didn't hold back when it came to his exit speech, with him branding his fellow contestants as "idiots" before revealing his Traitor status. “I’ve got no idea what everyone’s doing wrong," he told them. "I can’t believe you’ve done it again. I can’t believe that I’m standing here for no good reason I don’t want to be rude, but, you’re idiots! "I’m not judging, because it’s fiendish - I’m not blaming the players, I’m blaming the game. I am now, and have been all through the game, completely Faithful,” he insisted, as heads went into hands around the table, before he added: “To the Traitors !" Everyone cheered that they had finally managed to catch a Traitor after weeks of not being able to. Cat Burns and Alan Carr are the two remaining Traitors in the game. Like this story? Brit arrested in Ukraine accused of spying for Putin's Russia

A British man has been detained in Ukraine accused of spying for Russia and plotting "terrorist attacks". Kyiv prosecutors said the unnamed man passed sensitive information to Russian intelligence while working as a military instructor. He allegedly gathered intel on facilities in Odesa, tried to access military units and discussed "the possibility of using explosive devices". One task reportedly earned him £5,148, according to prosecutors. Ukraine's security service, the SBU, said he had been "preparing to commit terrorist attacks" in a separate statement. The SBU said Russian spies sent him instructions on making an improvised explosive device and gave him the location of a weapons cache, from which he allegedly took a pistol and two loaded magazines. The man is said to have arrived in Ukraine in January 2024 and ran "instructional sessions for military personnel in Mykolaiv", a city near the front line in the south of the country. He then moved to the port city of Odesa in September, where prosecutors say he was in contact with a "representative of the Russian special service" and agreed to sell military information. Evidence suggests that in May he sent the location of Ukrainian units, photos of training areas and personal details of military personnel, according to prosecutors. The SBU also said he had "professional skills in fire and tactical training" and openly advertised on "pro-Kremlin internet groups" that he was willing to spy. The man was detained at his "temporary residence" in Kyiv, the SBU said. He appeared in court this week and was held without bail while a pre-trial investigation took place. Ukrainian security services say he could face up to 12 years in prison. The UK Foreign Office said it was aware of the reports and is "in close contact with the Ukrainian authorities". This appears to be the first publicly reported case of a British national facing espionage charges in Ukraine. It comes as three men, aged 44, 45 and 48, were recently arrested on suspicion of assisting Russia's intelligence service, the Metropolitan Police said. The men were detained by Counter Terrorism Policing at addresses in west and central London last Thursday and remain in police custody under section 3 of the National Security Act, the force added. Commander Dominic Murphy, head of Counter Terrorism Policing London, said: "We’re seeing an increasing number of who we would describe as ‘proxies’ being recruited by foreign intelligence services and these arrests are directly related to our ongoing efforts to disrupt this type of activity. "Anyone who might be contacted by and tempted into carrying out criminal activity on behalf of a foreign state here in the UK should think again. This kind of activity will be investigated and anyone found to be involved can expect to be prosecuted and there are potentially very serious consequences for those who are convicted."

Banished Premier League star could make shock return after being made to train with reserves

Former Brentford star Neal Maupay has been banished from the first team set-up at Marseille. A report has stated that the ex-Brighton forward currently only participates in warm-ups. French publication L'Equipe claims the 29-year-old has been ostracised from first-team training and meetings. Maupay joined Marseille from Everton in the summer of 2024. The striker had two spells with Brentford, from 2019-2019, and then on another, while on loan from the Toffees, in 2023. Maupay made 24 appearances in all competitions last season for Marseille. He scored four goals and bagged four assists. However, Marseille boss Roberto De Zerbi deemed Maupay not up to scratch as he looked to bolster his side with new attackers. Everton confirmed his departure in the summer , however, Maupay has since been dropped and has yet to play a single minute for Marseille this season. The report made damning reading for the Frenchman. "Maupay has rarely been prolific and his lack of stats and the arrival of new forwards in the shape of Amine Gouiri (who joined in January), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, and Igor Paixao was clearly going to further reduce the Frenchman’s game time," the report read. "However, there were no buyers for the former Brentford and Everton centre-forward, and so he remained at OM but very much on the margins. He only participates in the warm-ups and then for the rest of the session, does passes with the assistant manager and laps of the pitch." The report concluded: "Maupay is no longer included in matchday squads and is no longer even summoned to team meetings." After making his name with Brentford, and then Brighton , Everton spent big in order to secure the Frenchman's services in August 2022. However, he only played 32 times across two seasons and later hit out at the club on social media. Speaking on his ill-fated move to Everton, Maupay told Give Me Sport : "I think pretty much everything, to be honest with you. "The club wasn't in the right place in terms of the manager because we changed the manager that season. I think the way we were playing didn't fit my game. "If you try to play long ball football and put crosses into a player like me, that doesn’t match my characteristics, so it won't work. I think sometimes it just doesn't work out. You never know before you join a club or a manager, but it's part of football." Maupay could now be eyeing a return to the Premier League . According to Le 10 Sport Brentford have recently shown an interest in bringing Maupay back to the club, with Trabzonspor and Sassuolo also reportedly registering an interest in signing him. The French outlet claimed over the summer that the Bees had made contact with his club to discuss the terms of a potential transfer, although a move failed to materialise. Should Brentford revive that interest in January, however, it could see Maupay make a shock return to the Premier League. Cowboys may be 'trending toward' making this George Pickens decision before trade deadline

Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens remains the subject of rumors regarding his uncertain future ahead of the NFL trade deadline, which will arrive at 4 p.m. ET this coming Tuesday, Nov. 4. For a mailbag published on Wednesday, NFL insider Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated was asked if the 3-4-1 Cowboys would be willing to trade Pickens if those running the team don't view its current roster as one capable of winning the Super Bowl in February 2026. Albert Breer predicts how Cowboys will handle George Pickens ahead of trade deadline "My guess is they won’t trade Pickens," Breer wrote about the Cowboys. "He’s on pace for 91 catches, 1,456 yards and 13 touchdowns, and, yes, he’s a free agent after this year. I’d say things are trending toward Pickens being (franchise) tagged in March, which would allow Dallas to either work out a long-term deal, trade him or keep him on the roster for another year." As Breer alluded to, Pickens enters Week 9 leading the Cowboys for the season with 63 targets, 685 receiving yards and six touchdown catches (tied for the team lead with tight end Jake Ferguson). Only Ferguson has tallied more total receptions (51) than Pickens (43) since Week 1. That said, a Dallas team that will need to bolster its defense during the offseason previously handed No. 1 receiver CeeDee Lamb a four-year, $136M deal in August 2024. The following month, the Cowboys signed quarterback Dak Prescott to a four-year extension reportedly worth $240M with $231M guaranteed. Thus, it's fair to ask just how much more money the Cowboys can afford to spend on their offense before next season gets underway. Why Cowboys may not be in a rush to trade George Pickens this fall Observers who think the Cowboys are destined to miss the upcoming postseason tournament have suggested Pickens will never be more valuable to the club than he is as a tradable asset this week. Breer indicated that's not necessarily the case. "I don’t think his trade value now is markedly better than it will be in March, for what that’s worth. So, I’m not sure there’s any benefit to acting now on it, either," Breer added about Pickens. There's no indication the Cowboys will trade Pickens before they host the Arizona Cardinals (2-5) for a "Monday Night Football" showdown on Nov. 3. As of Thursday morning, ESPN BET had Dallas as a 2.5-point favorite for that contest. One wonders if the outcome of the prime-time game will determine if Pickens will still be with the Cowboys on the morning of Nov. 5.

Ruben Amorim puts Lisandro Martinez in his place as Man Utd boss singles out three players

Ruben Amorim has revealed why he had to tell Lisandro Martinez 'no' as he spoke ahead of Manchester United's Premier League trip to Nottingham Forest on Saturday. The Reds travel to face Forest, looking to make it four straight wins in the top flight, after beating Sunderland , Liverpool and Brighton . Amorim's side would move up to second in the table - for a matter of hours at least - if they win at The City Ground. In his press conference, Amorim was asked about the club's injury situation, including Martinez's fitness, Forest's start to life since Sean Dyche replaced Ange Postecoglou and how United are going to cope without Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo during AFCON. So, with that in mind, The Mirror has taken a look at the best from the Portuguese's chat with the media on Thursday. Amorim has reminded Martinez who calls the shots after revealing the defender had made it clear that he desperately wanted to play against Nottingham Forest. The Argentine, however, has been told he is going to have to wait for his return to action. Martinez has been sidelined since February after injuring his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) against Crystal Palace , but was back in training with his United teammates earlier this week. Asked for an update on Martinez and whether he could make his return against Forest, Amorim said: "He wants to go to this one [Forest], he isn't going to this one. He's going to need time. "He has started training with us. Slowly, he is going to get better. "It's really good. He gives use that edge in every training session, that is also really good for us. The rest of the guys we have one day. I don't know about Harry Maguire , the rest are fit." Amorim has praised three Nottingham Forest players ahead of Manchester United's trip to the East Midlands. The United head coach singled out England stars Morgan Gibbs-White, Elliot Anderson and Callum Hudson-Odoi as the main dangermen. The United boss also revealed that he has watched Forest closely since Dyche took over the reins. The ex-Burnley and Everton boss has won one and lost one game in charge of Forest since replacing Ange Postecoglou earlier this month, beating Porto in the Europa League and falling to a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth. "I watched against Porto, I watched against Bournemouth , the style of play is similar, with different characteristics," Amorim said. "I watched one game that we didn't pre-season with Sporting, so to try to understand how he played in that game. It's similar, he can change some characteristics of the players with the talent that they have, especially with Gibbs-White, Anderson, Hudson-Odoi, very good players. "So we need to be prepared for a different game against Brighton. We had space to play. We are not going to have that space. You need to understand that we are not being the same team away and at home, so we need to improve the way we control the environment. Every tackle is a big moment for the opponent's fans, so we need to play better away. We are prepared for a very tough match." Amad Diallo and Bryan Mbeumo won't be involved for a period in December and January due to the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) - and Amorim believes the Reds are going to "struggle" without them. The tournament is set to start on Sunday, December 21, before running through Christmas and the New Year , with the final taking place on Sunday, January 18. "We will have time to suffer," Amorim said when asked about Amad and Mbeumo's expected absence. "We are going to struggle a little bit, but we already knew it's going to be an opportunity. "When I watch the training, there are players that should be playing, but it's hard with one game to take some players from the team, because they are doing well also during the training in games. So other players are going to have the opportunity to help us. "They are understanding the way we want to play, so if we are improving on that, the change of characteristics is not going to change the idea or the momentum of the team. But let's use Amad and Bryan in these games and we will see in general." Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football . Legal Team of Abrego Garcia Criticizes Todd Blanche, Labeling Him as Cowardly

Attorneys representing Kilmar Abrego Garcia have sharply criticized the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) extensive attempts to block subpoenas targeting top officials. They described the DOJ’s effort to prevent these officials from appearing in court to discuss their motivations behind the prosecution for “smuggling illegal aliens” as “bizarre,” “untenable,” and even cowardly. Following U.S. District Judge Waverly Crenshaw’s decision to hold an evidentiary hearing on Abrego Garcia’s claim of vindictive prosecution—a ruling that highlighted Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche’s statements on Fox News as potential “direct evidence of vindictiveness”—the defense has been eager to have Blanche testify under oath. The DOJ has argued that there were legitimate, non-vindictive reasons for charging Abrego Garcia, especially after his return to the U.S. from El Salvador seemed imminent. They offered the testimony of acting U.S. Attorney Robert McGuire, the “actual decisionmaker” in the human smuggling case, and labeled the defense’s actions as a “fishing expedition” lacking substance. However, the defense countered, asserting that Blanche could not evade a subpoena through “blanket” privilege claims. Blanche, formerly the criminal defense attorney for President Donald Trump and currently the second-highest official in the DOJ under U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, drew attention with his televised comments. Judge Crenshaw noted that these remarks appeared to connect the prosecution to the fallout from Abrego Garcia’s lawsuit, which reportedly caused “embarrassment” for the government. Judge Crenshaw described Blanche’s statements as “remarkable” and referenced a legal precedent stating that an “actual confession by the prosecutor” is the “clearest” proof of a vindictive prosecution. He suggested that these statements could directly reveal that the motivations for Abrego’s charges were more about retribution for his legal actions against the Executive Official Defendants than a genuine intention to pursue criminal charges. The DOJ contended that requiring Blanche to testify in person, based solely on “speculation,” would not pierce the executive branch’s “presumptively shielded” discussions concerning official decision-making. They argued that this did not justify compelling a high-ranking official like the deputy AG to testify. Abrego Garcia’s legal team answered Wednesday that it is not impressed with DOJ’s opposition, likening it to an argument “that down is up.” “The government characterizes as ‘irrelevant’ testimony that is not just relevant but central to the issues before the Court. It labels as a ‘fishing expedition’ a request for testimony from a person the Court has already identified as a key witness,” the filing said. “It describes as ‘unsupported’ and ‘extraordinarily weak’ a rare, successful prima facie showing of vindictiveness. It describes this as an ordinary case, feigning blindness when it is plain to any fair observer that the government’s own conduct, time and time again, has made this case extraordinary.” Needling high-ranking DOJ officials for being “resolutely unwilling to show up” and not having the “courage to come to Court to defend themselves” and the government’s “motivations” for bringing a criminal case the defense seeks to dismiss, Abrego Garcia called the resistance “bizarre” and “impossible to take seriously.” “[T]he government’s bizarre claim that it is ‘unknown altogether’ what testimony Mr. Blanche might be asked to give is impossible to take seriously,” the filing continued. “Mr. Blanche publicly claimed to know all about the motivations for this case. This Court has held that those motivations are a central issue at the upcoming hearing, and has already made clear that Mr. Blanche’s testimony is relevant.” Notably, Abrego Garcia also subpoenaed Associate Deputy Attorney General Aakash Singh and Blanche counselor James McHenry for testimony. The filing, citing DOJ whistleblower Erez Reuveni, said that McHenry “reportedly supervised” the civil case that the defendant claims he’s being persecuted for bringing and was “apparently involved in supervising plea negotiations in this case.” McHenry “was described in the whistleblower disclosure of Erez Reuveni, the former Acting Deputy Director for the Office of Immigration Litigation who represented the government in the early days of Mr. Abrego’s civil lawsuit, as having ‘directed’ Reuveni, as of April 2 and 3, ‘to stop asking for facts supporting any possible defense of the case, that no ‘asks’ of El Salvador of any sort should be made’ in litigating Mr. Abrego’s civil case—just two weeks before the investigation into Mr. Abrego was reopened,” court documents said. Reuveni, fired after admitting that Abrego Garcia should not have been deported from Maryland to El Salvador, went on to allege that former DOJ higher-up Emil Bove, now a 3rd Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals judge with a lifetime job, had suggested giving the courts an “f— you” if the Trump administration was blocked from carrying out sweeping Alien Enemies Act removals of alleged gang members. The defendant said, given all of that background, the “valid” subpoenas cannot be quashed and “must be enforced.” Days ago, as reports swirled that the DOJ might deport the defendant to Liberia rather than prosecute him, Crenshaw additionally put Bondi and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem “on notice” that sanctions may follow if they or their employees pose “a clear and present danger,” through their words, to Abrego Garcia’s right to a fair trial. As things stand in the criminal human smuggling case, the vindictive prosecution evidentiary hearing is on track for Nov. 4.

Hyderabad, Oct 30 (IANS) Severe cyclonic storm Montha and accompanying heavy damage to crops over 4,47,864 in Telangana, shows the preliminary assessment of losses by the state’s agriculture department. Most of the crop loss occurred in Warangal, Khammam and Nalgonda districts Agriculture Minister Tummala Nageswara Rao said that crop loss may increase in the full-fledged survey and assured that the government will support every affected farmer. The minister revealed that 4,47,864 acres of crops belonging to 2,53,033 farmers in 179 mandals of 12 districts were damaged due to the cyclone, and that the crop loss may increase after a full-scale survey. As per the preliminary details of crop loss, paddy was damaged in 2,82,379 acres and cotton in 1,51,707 acres. The crop damage was mostly in the Warangal district. The crop damage here occurred in 1,30,200 acres, followed by Khammam district with 62,400 acres and Nalgonda district with 52,071 acres, according to the preliminary report. Minister Nageswara Rao assured that every farmer who has suffered losses due to the impact of Cyclone Motha will be supported. He announced that CM Revanth Reddy will tour the flood-affected districts and that the government will stand by the farmers. The Agriculture Minister said that he would discuss with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy how much crop loss compensation should be given per acre. The preliminary report shows that the maize crop was damaged over 4,963 acres, chilli 3,613 acres, pulses 1228 acres and groundnut 2,674 acres. Horticulture and other crops were damaged over 1,300 acres. Expressing serious concern over the plight of the flood-affected farmers during the crop harvesting, the CM said that the government set the target of 80 lakh metric tonnes of paddy procurement and instructed the Civil Supplies Department to take strict measures accordingly. In the wake of the reports that paddy has been soaked in many places and the farmers are worried about their paddy stocks being washed away in some IKP centres, CM Revanth Reddy instructed the collectors to make arrangements to immediately shift paddy from the IKP centres to the nearest godowns and mills. The officials were also ordered to store Paddy in the nearest function halls where mills and godowns are not available. The Collectors were also instructed to appoint an in-charge officer for each procurement centre.

PM Modi flags off 25 new e-buses at Statue of Unity, launches green mobility drive for tourists

Ahmedabad, Oct 30 (IANS) On the eve of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel’s 150th birth anniversary, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday flagged off 25 newly built electric buses worth Rs 30 crore at the Statue of Unity in Kevadia, Narmada district, as part of a major push towards sustainable tourism and eco-friendly transport. With this addition, Ekta Nagar now operates a total of 55 e-buses, providing tourists with a free, comfortable, and environment-friendly means of travel across the area. The Prime Minister’s green transport initiative is aimed at transforming Ekta Nagar into India’s first model “E-City”, reflecting his broader vision of clean mobility and sustainable development. The new 9-metre-long, air-conditioned e-buses can travel up to 180 km on a single charge. They have been designed with a focus on inclusivity, featuring special accessibility systems for differently-abled passengers, including a hydraulic lift for easy boarding and alighting. In addition, four pink seats have been reserved for women to ensure comfort and safety. Speaking on the occasion, PM Modi said: “Ekta Nagar is not just a tourist destination; it is a living example of environmental consciousness and sustainable growth. The addition of e-buses will ensure cleaner air, lower noise pollution, and modern amenities for visitors.” Under the “India’s First E-City” initiative, the Statue of Unity Area Development and Tourism Governance Authority (SOUADTGA) has progressively introduced various electric modes of transport — including e-cars, e-rickshaws, and now e-buses — to promote carbon-neutral tourism and reduce vehicular emissions in the area. First announced by PM Modi on World Environment Day 2021, the project has since transformed Ekta Nagar into a symbol of eco-friendly tourism and technological advancement. With the launch of the new fleet, visitors can now enjoy smart, free, and sustainable mobility while exploring the Statue of Unity complex and surrounding attractions. Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group dismisses Cobrapost report as baseless motivated campaign

Mumbai, Oct 30 (IANS) The Reliance Group on Thursday dismissed the Cobrapost report — which alleged that the Anil Ambani-led company had diverted funds to the tune of over Rs 41,900 crore — as “a malicious, baseless, and motivated campaign” being orchestrated by the news platform at the behest of the group’s corporate rivals. The Reliance Group said in its rebuttal to the report that certain corporate rivals appear to be orchestrating this alleged exercise with the malicious intent to tarnish the reputation of Reliance Infrastructure Limited, Reliance Power Limited, Anil D. Ambani, and one of the largest family of over 55 lakh shareholders aimed at crashing the stock prices, and engineering panic in stock markets to acquire Reliance Group assets at rock bottom stock priced levels. The Reliance Group did not mention who the corporate rivals were, but stated that they wanted to acquire its prime assets, such as Delhi’s power distribution company BSES Ltd, Mumbai Metro and 1,200 MW Rosa power project at throwaway prices. The Reliance Group also said the information being referred to in the Cobrapost report is long available in the public domain and has already been examined by statutory authorities, including the CBI, ED, SEBI, and other competent agencies. “Any suo motu comments or statements on these subjects would amount to contempt of court, and interference with the right to fair trial,” it added. Over the last three months, the combined market capitalisation of Reliance Infrastructure and Reliance Power has declined by over Rs 15,000 crore, driven by rumor-mongering, speculative trading, and orchestrated misinformation. The credibility, intent, and funding of Cobrapost, and its associates therefore merit serious scrutiny, the rebuttal added. Earlier in the day, Cobrapost alleged that the Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group has indulged in “a massive banking fraud amounting to more than Rs. 28,874 crore” since 2006 with impunity. The Cobrapost report alleges that the fraud involves siphoning off funds that were raised through bank loans, IPOs and bonds by listed ADA Group companies In addition, about $1,535 billion raised abroad was routed to India in a fraudulent manner. This includes $750 million a mysterious benefactor company, NexGen Capital, advanced to Emerging Market Investments & Trading Pte (EMITS) of Singapore during a temporary custody arrangement with Reliance Innoventures, the holding company of the ADA Group, Cobrapost further alleged in its investigation report which has been posted on its website. “The value of US$1,535 million thus diverted works out to Rs. 13,047.50 crore in Indian currency and put together, the amounts involved stand at more than Rs. 41,921.57 crore,” the Cobrapost report alleges.

J&K Cabinet’s reservation report to be finalised after L-G’s approval

Srinagar, Oct 30 (IANS) J&K cabinet sub-committee report on reservations has been submitted to the council of ministers and will be finalised after approval from the Lt Governor, the legislative assembly was told on Thursday. The Jammu and Kashmir Government on Thursday disclosed that the cabinet sub–committee on reservation has submitted its report to the council of ministers, and it shall be finalised in due course after obtaining requisite approval from the competent authority. In its reply to a question submitted by Peoples Conference President Sajad Gani Lone and Independent MLA Shabir Kulley, the Minister in charge of the General Administration Department informed the Assembly that the cabinet sub-committee, after due deliberations and consultations with stakeholders, has submitted its report to the Council of Ministers. The report shall be finalised in due course of time after obtaining the requisite approval of the competent authority, the minister said. The Minister said that the existing reservation policy broadly aligns with constitutional provisions and judicial principles, including those laid down in the Indira Sawhney vs. Union of India (1992) judgment. In Indira Sawhney versus Union of India judgment, the Supreme Court has held that reservations should ordinarily not exceed 50 per cent of the available vacancies. “However, it is also clarified that this ceiling is not an absolute rule and may be relaxed in extraordinary circumstances, where exceptional circumstances and peculiar facts of a particular state or region justify such a department,” the minister’s reply reads. The government, however, said that it does not maintain region-wise or district-wise details of selections for junior scale posts in the Jammu and Kashmir Administrative Service, Jammu and Kashmir Police (Gazetted) Service, and Jammu & Kashmir Accounts Service, saying it doesn’t maintain such data. After coming to power in October 2024, the Omar Abdullah-led government had formed a cabinet sub-committee to recommend changes in the existing reservation rules in J&K so that maximum opportunity is given to open merit category candidates in government jobs and professional colleges.

UK's 'most magical street' is real-life Diagon Alley with quirky shops and hidden gems

A street in one of Britain's oldest cities, York, is a captivating spot brimming with unique shops, cosy pubs , and lively bars. The Shambles, as it's affectionately known, is a labyrinth of winding, narrow lanes nestled in the heart of North Yorkshire. It transforms into a magical place when the nights grow longer and the Christmas lights twinkle. At the middle of the area lies a lane actually named the Shambles, renowned as possibly the best-preserved medieval street globally, even earning a mention in the 1086 literary sensation, the Domesday Book. Many of the structures lining the street today trace their origins back to the late 14th century. The name 'Shambles' is believed to have evolved from 'Shammel', an Anglo-Saxon term for the shelves that were once a common sight in the open shopfronts. While the ancient name and buildings persist, the purpose of most shops has evolved over time. The butchers who once busily chopped, skinned, and portioned meat here have long since departed. The only remnants of their trade are the meat hooks they used to display their goods on the shopfronts. Nowadays, the Shambles accommodates a variety of businesses. Still, its medieval overhanging buildings and tight alleyways remain intact, offering visitors a sense of stepping back in time. During my university days, I spent three years in York, witnessing the Shambles transform with the changing seasons and times of day. At Christmas, the streets were bustling with eager shoppers seeking a bargain and a warm pastry to ward off the cold. During this bustling period, it might be wise to head to one of the quieter yet equally enchanting streets on the other side of town until the crowds thin out in the evening. In the summer, the Shambles are filled with the sound of busking students, hen parties, and day-trippers there to sample some of York's pubs. Whether the widely circulated claim that the city has a pub for every day of the year is indeed true takes far longer than a day, a long weekend, or even a three-year degree to verify. This is largely because you'll likely find yourself repeatedly visiting the superb House of Trembling Madness. My favourite time to visit was in the dead of night, after a stop at one of these many pubs or the now sadly closed and much-missed Willow - a delightfully grubby club/Chinese restaurant. In certain sections of the Shambles, you can touch both sides of the street with your arms outstretched. The best time to test your wingspan is once all the other visitors have headed home. In recent years, the narrow lane has become saturated with wizard-themed shops, thanks to its striking resemblance to the fictional Diagon Alley from Harry Potter . When the relentless peddling of magical merchandise becomes overwhelming, visitors can retreat to the shrine of Margaret Clitherow. Step inside this peaceful sanctuary and you'll find respite from the bag-wielding mayhem that's left firmly outside. The shrine welcomes the public throughout the week and holds Mass at 10am each Saturday. A quick walk through one of the Shambles' snickelways (narrow alleyways) brings you to the Shambles Market, an open-air venue selling food and various goods. TikToker That Girl Fleurr, who explores destinations around the UK, recently declared the Shambles 'the most magical street' in Britain in a video. It's a sentiment that's difficult to challenge. Jerry Rebbeck, who runs Wheelwrights York , told the Express: "Many of the buildings in the centre of York are centuries old, and have a spooky charm about them - walking down Micklegate at night feels like walking through a ghostly storybook. "Within the city centre, historic buildings such as 85 Micklegate, a late medieval timber-framed terraced building, loom over the narrow street and look particularly eerie in the moonlight. Walking down the Shambles, famed for its likeness to Harry Potter's Diagon Alley, you can see ghostly-looking old buildings such as 37 The Shambles that cast long shadows and add to the city's paranormal feel. It's these atmospheric streets and striking old buildings that help make York a picturesque backdrop for a Halloween weekend."
