From tacos to tea, Spanberger spends an afternoon pandering to Latinos and Asians

Spanberger’s campaign listed both venue locations as private, and attendees were told not to carry homemade signs, which were a “prohibited” item that would be confiscated by security, according to invitation instructions. At Soricha Tea & Theater, a Korean cafe in Fairfax County, where Asian Americans are the largest ethnic minority group, Spanberger took part in a tea-pouring and preparation ceremony. There, she also watched with enthusiasm a ceremonial drum performance showcased by Korean school children dressed in traditional hanbok. In the corner, a stand-alone Spanberger campaign banner was wedged between structures holding the buks, or barrel-shaped Korean drums. At the Alexandria location of Los Tios Grill, a local Tex-Mex chain known for its oversized margaritas, Spanberger flexed her multilingual chops. Spanberger, a former CIA operations officer, spoke in fluent Spanish for approximately four minutes, much to the surprise of some in attendance. An expressive Spanberger, at times gesticulating in a Tim Walz-like manner, bantered with Spanish-speaking supporters seated before her, eliciting slight chuckles and approving nods scattered around the eatery. If elected, as Spanberger’s surrogates reminded supporters Thursday, she would be the first female governor in Virginia history, though her Republican competitor would be that too, as well as the first black woman to win the commonwealth’s governorship. In the political Left’s identity hierarchy, Earle-Sears has Spanberger beat. Facing criticism for being too scripted and for declining to take stands on hot-button issues, Spanberger, whose critics view her as an unremarkable white woman without conviction, surrounded herself just days before the election with more racially diverse allies who nonetheless spouted familiar talking points. At the Latino-focused event, the front few rows were lined with Latino supporters, and behind them sat a mix of people. Lauren Lobrano, an Alexandria local, told the Washington Examiner that although she is not Latina, what brought her out to the “Latinos for Spanberger” event was an email from the campaign. “I’ve been volunteering for the Spanberger campaign, knocking on doors in my free time,” Lobrano said. “Got an email and was excited to come out and see her in person and say thank you.” Maria Cardona, who is Latina, said she is a Washington, D.C. resident but knows many Spanberger supporters in Northern Virginia, naming Arlington Public Schools board member Zuraya Tapia-Hadley. “She is a dear friend of mine,” Cardona told the Washington Examiner. “I knew about this [outreach event], and I am close to the people who work with her as well.” Many of those tightly packed into the crowded room, standing around the dozens seated, were campaign staffers, members of the press, and local officials stumping for Spanberger. Spanberger was flanked by local Latino leaders, including Virginia Del. Alfonso Lopez (D-Arlington), who insisted that Spanberger has “detailed plans about how to move Virginia’s education forward,” though she could not articulate a clear stance on school transgender policies during her one-and-only televised debate against GOP Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears. Alexandria City Councilor Canek Aguirre, the son of Mexican immigrants, spoke about mass deportations under the Trump administration. Drawing audible boos from the audience, Aguirre accused Immigration and Customs Enforcement of “snatching” innocents off the street and “terrorizing communities.” Piling on, Spanberger painted frightening imagery of ICE operations, saying that although she is “a law-and-order Democrat,” it is “not law and order to have your citizens, your community members, live in fear.” “Rounding up of people, making children live in fear, ensuring that elderly grandparents aren’t going to church because they are afraid, and then kids are staying home from school because they are afraid their parents may not be home when they get there, that should offend everyone,” Spanberger said, to resounding applause. Spanberger’s time-pressed star guest, Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-AZ), however, jetted off to the U.S. Capitol before he could share his origin story as a Latino child of immigrants making it in America. “He did not do a very good job of telling his story, so I’m going to tell it,” Spanberger said of her headlining speaker. That she did, recounting in great detail how Gallego got into Harvard after cold-calling Hispanic students off the university directory to seek out application advice. While enrolled, Gallego worked as a custodian, Spanberger continued, and learned to navigate the Ivy League’s elitist landscape as a low-income college kid. “When kids who might dream big about what’s possible as they work a job or two in between helping translate for their parents or trying to get used to life in this new place, people can look to Ruben, saying, ‘He did it. I can do it too.’ And that’s what this country is about. I am grateful for his support, his service, in all its forms, particularly at this moment,” Spanberger said. At the end of the event, Spanberger trotted out 95-year-old organizing powerhouse Dolores Huerta, a famous labor figure who co-founded what would become the United Farm Workers alongside celebrated Latino folk hero Cesar Chavez. Huerta, now a nonagenarian, yet still energized as ever, was flown in on a red eye from California and wore a T-shirt spelling out “Protest, Organize, Walkout, Everyone, Rise Up,” acronymed “P.O.W.E.R.” Standing next to Spanberger, a microphoned Huerta led the crowd in chanting the UFW’s storied slogan, which she created, “Sí, se puede!” In 2008, President Barack Obama adopted an English translation of it as a campaign motto, “Yes, we can,” and enjoyed much success from the borrowed mantra.

Strictly Come Dancing's Harry Aikines-Aryeetey reveals unique trick in 'difficult' admission

Strictly Come Dancing's Harry Aikines-Aryeetey admitted that he has an unusual trick up his sleeve when it comes to looking serious for his performances. On Saturday (October 25), it was Icons Week in the Strictly Come Dancing ballroom, where the remaining celebrities transformed into various stars. As for Gladiator Harry, he transformed into icon Usher as he performed an Argentine Tango with Karen to the R&B star's track, Caught Up. Harry received a mishmash of scores from the judges, with a total of 30 points. Craig Revel Horwood and Shirley Ballas criticising the routine, while Motsi Mabuse and Anton Du Beke both liked what they saw. For next Saturday (November 1), Harry will have to leave Usher in the past as it's Halloween week on the dancefloor. He'll be performing the American Smooth to Mystical Magical by Benson Boone, with hopes that he'll make it through to another week of Strictly fun. Appearing on Friday's (October 31) installment of Strictly: It Takes Two, Harry and Karen Hauer opened up about their routine to Fleur East. Reflecting on having Oti and Motsi Mabuse's support, Harry shared: "Genuinely, they're legends. It's always nice to feel that people are sort of enjoying what you're doing, but most importantly at the end of the day, the room was electric. "The vibe was so right, and the fact that they can vouch for us, I'm glad that someone's actually saying that." Karen responded to the judges feedback, as she said: "I thought we had fun, we had a really beautiful balance, but you know what? Listen, the judges have a really hard job on their hands, so sometimes they're gonna like it. "Sometimes they're not. I just wish they liked it!" The American Smooth will be a change of pace to the last two weeks for Harry, who admitted that it will be nice to smile again before revealing his unique trick to stay serious. He said: "I'm smiling now just because I know I can smile. Life is about smiling for me, and every day's a gift, so if there's a day that I can't smile... "I have to pretend that Karen's forehead is a dessert that I really want to eat and smoulder at it. That's been really difficult to do, for the last two weeks, I've been looking at your forehead like a dessert!" Both Karen and Fleur laughed as the latter added: "Listen, whatever works!"

Port Police Boss Tours Customs Commands To Address Maritime Crimes

The Commissioner of Police, Ports Authority Police (Western) Command, Toyin Agbaminoja, has commenced familiarisation tour of formations and strategic stakeholders within the maritime industry as part of inter-agency cooperation and intelligence sharing in combating smuggling, cargo theft, and other maritime related crimes. The Commissioner also visited the Apapa Area Command, PTML Area Command, and Tincan Island Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Isaac Hundeyin said in a statement on Friday that the Commissioner ‘s visits were aimed at strengthening the existing synergy between the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), while fostering closer collaboration among key stakeholders to enhance security, facilitate trade, and promote effective operational harmony across the Western Ports. She explained that the visit to the Apapa Area Command took place on Tuesday, 29th October 2025, while the visits to the PTML and Tincan Island Port Area Commands were held on Thursday, 30th October 2025. At the respective commands, Agbaminoja was warmly received by Comptroller E.O.A. Oshoba of the Apapa Area Command, Comptroller J.A. Anani of the PTML Area Command, and Comptroller F.O. Onyeka of the Tincan Island Port Area Command, along with their management teams. Agbaminoja commended the Nigeria Customs Service for its unwavering dedication to safeguarding Nigeria’s economic interests and assured them of the continued support of the Ports Authority Police (Western) Command in maintaining a safe and orderly port environment. While addressing officers during the visits,he reaffirmed her readiness to work closely with all port stakeholders to ensure that the ports remain secure, efficient, and conducive for legitimate trade and business operations. In their separate remarks, Comptrollers Oshoba, Anani, and Onyeka commended CP Agbaminoja’s proactive and inclusive leadership style and pledged their continued cooperation with the Police in pursuit of shared security and operational objectives. The visits concluded with interactive sessions focused on addressing security challenges, improving coordination, and exploring new strategies for joint operations within the maritime sector.

Man hurt as buses crash into each other outside Metrolink stop

A man was hurt after two buses crashed into each other outside Eccles tram stop tonight. The drama happened after two Bee Network services - said to have no passengers aboard at the time - crashed into each other on Regent Street in Eccles. Police and fire crews were scrambled to the scene and a section of Regent Street was cordoned off and surrounding roads were closed. One eye-witness told the Manchester Evening News a man 'jumped in front of' one bus causing it to 'veer over and smash into another bus'. Pictures from the scene showed an area of Regent Street cordoned off with officials at the scene. A recovery truck arrived later to tow away one of the buses. Road closures remain in place around Regent Street, added the spokeswoman. A spokesperson at Transport for Greater Manchester, said: "We're aware of a collision at Eccles Interchange at around 17.00 today involving two Bee Network buses. Our staff are fully supporting Greater Manchester Fire Service and North West Ambulance Service who were both in attendance." Corrupt prison counsellor is jailed

A corrupt prison counsellor has been jailed. Carrie Yih, from Bolton, was working at HMP Lancaster Farms when she had an inappropriate relationship with an inmate. Despite receiving counter-corruption training, Yih engaged in sexually explicit communications with the prisoner, both during and after his time in custody, and supplied him with controlled drugs. On March 1st 2023 officers from the North West Regional Organised Crime Unit raided Yih's home address. Yih attempted to discard a carrier bag containing the prisoner's belongings into a neighbour’s garden as officers arrived. Today Yih, mental health counsellor, was sentenced at Bolton Crown Court following an investigation led by the North West Regional Prison Anti-Corruption Unit. Yih, 47, of Rawcliffe Avenue, Bolton was jailed for 10 months after pleading guilty to misconduct in a public office; and being concerned in the supply of Class C controlled drugs – anabolic steroids and pregabalin tablets. GES interdicts Nobisco bursar, storekeeper over alleged theft of food supplies

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has interdicted the Bursar of the Northern School of Business Senior High School (Nobisco), Fedelia Kudaariwo, and the Storekeeper, Rashida Adam, over allegations of theft of food items meant for students. The school’s driver, Alhassan Sulemana, has also been reassigned to the Regional Education Office pending the outcome of investigations. JoyNews sources indicate that a preliminary report has been forwarded to the GES headquarters after the Regional Director, Alhassan Alidu Jnr, led a team to the school to assess the situation. The Regional Education Directorate has constituted a six-member committee to investigate the alleged theft. The committee, which will be inaugurated on November 3, 2025, is expected to assess the procedures for issuing food items at the school, investigate the movement of food items to the bursar’s residence, and establish the reasons for transporting food items out of the school at odd hours. It will also verify whether the food items seen in the viral video belong to the school, determine whether any diversion, misconduct, or breach of policy occurred, and recommend appropriate disciplinary actions and measures to strengthen accountability. This development follows allegations that large quantities of food supplies intended for students were found in the bursar’s residence after a volunteer group intercepted a driver transporting the items. The driver reportedly implicated the bursar in the operation.

Will Mavericks actually miss playoffs? Here’s why it’s not crazy

The Dallas Mavericks are 2-3 to start the NBA season, despite playing all five games at home. When the Mavericks drafted Cooper Flagg, they believed they had a gem who could help them get into playoff contention immediately. While that still might happen, there have been some ups and downs, and the struggles have led many to believe the Mavs might miss the playoffs this season. When you look at the underlying figures, that might not be such an overreaction. According to Team Rankings, Dallas ranks 30th in points per game. They also rank 25th in field-goal shooting percentage and 28th in three-point shooting percentage. While they are ninth in rebounds per game, it has not helped them, as they have only won two of the first five games. The season got off to a really rocky start when the San Antonio Spurs demolished the Mavs 125-92. Then, the Mavs lost 117-107 to the lowly Washington Wizards. Although they recovered with a 139-129 win over the Toronto Raptors, they followed it up with a 101-94 loss to the defending champion, the Oklahoma City Thunder. The Mavs won their most recent game, 107-105 over the Indiana Pacers. The defense has carried them, ranking 12th in opponent points per game and opponent field-goal shooting percentage. Even with that, here are three potential obstacles that could harm them throughout the rest of the season, and why they might miss the NBA Playoffs. Where is Kyrie Irving? When the Mavericks lost Kyrie Irving to a torn ACL, many knew it would be a while before he returned. When the 2025-26 NBA season began, the rough estimate was January. To soften the blow of not having Irving, the Mavs signed D’Angelo Russell with the idea that he would be running the point until Irving returned. It has not worked out that way. Instead, the Mavs have pivoted and put Flagg at the point through the first five games. While he has not been awful, his inexperience has shown in the first few games of the season. Flagg is averaging 13.4 points per game while shooting just 41 percent from the field. Additionally, he has had some wild games already, including five turnovers against the Wizards. Flagg may work out as an elite point guard, but he is not the option to replace Irving right now. Anthony Davis is hurting To the surprise of no one, Anthony Davis is already hurt, something that was a recurring problem when he played for the Los Angeles Lakers and last year with the Mavs. Ultimately, the Mavs putting all their faith in Davis to stay on the floor was never a good idea. While they do have three big men to rotate in with him, they don’t have the playmakers to help them thrive. Davis being out for an extended period of time could be devastating to a Mavericks team that is attempting to find its footing. If he cannot play in the next game or even for a week, it could hurt the Mavs’ chances of making a run. Since they already played five games at home, the schedule will only get challenging as they head out on the road for the first time. Their division is tougher this season While divisions don’t matter in the NBA as much as they once did, it is still very important, especially when you have to play your divisional rivals four times a season. While the Mavs attempt to find their way, they find themselves in a division that is suddenly much tougher. The Houston Rockets signed Kevin Durant in the offseason and look to be one of the NBA’s more challenging teams. Meanwhile, Victor Wembanyama has carried the Spurs to a 5-0 start and looks incredibly formidable. Ja Morant and the Grizzlies continue to win and are right behind the Spurs in the standings. Sure, the New Orleans Pelicans are still winless and clearly rebuilding. But take the Pelicans out, and this is still a division to be reckoned with. The Mavericks’ blowout loss to the Spurs showed just how far apart the teams are in terms of competitiveness. While many expected it to be an interesting game to start the season, the Spurs blew the Mavs out and showed why they are the better team in Texas. The Mavericks will face the Rockets for the first time this week in Houston, and the odds don’t look like they are in Dallas’ favor. Then, they will head to Memphis to face the Grizzlies. The saving grace for the Mavericks is that they don’t have to face the Spurs again until February. By then, Irving and Davis could be back. But will it be enough to make the playoffs? The Mavs’ playoff hopes are certainly in question.

Bears RB D’Andre Swift won’t play vs. Bengals amid injury concern

Following a four-game winning streak, which created a ton of optimism in Chicago, the Bears were soundly beaten by the Baltimore Ravens last week. Starting running back D’Andre Swift picked up a groin injury in the loss. Despite not practicing to start the week, there was not much concern outside of the building that he would not play this week against the Cincinnati Bengals. But after missing practice again on Friday, Bears head coach Ben Johnson officially ruled Swift out for Week 9. Johnson shed some light on the injury situation after practice on Friday, per CHGO Sports’ Adam Jahns. “It’s really been a chronic thing for a while now. I think it probably goes earlier than (Washington) D.C. that he’s been feeling something,” Johnson said. “And so we’re just doing our due diligence to make sure we’re getting the best version of Swift to help this team, for him and his individual success. We just want to make sure we have him in a good spot for the whole season.” Those comments will likely provide some speculation that Swift might miss more than just one week. In his absence, Kyle Monangai will get the start. Monangai has been really impressive this season, albeit in limited work. The rookie seventh-round pick out of Rutgers has 44 carries for 186 yards (4.4 yards per carry) and one rushing touchdown. He has looked the part when on the field, at least running between the tackles. But he does not provide that same level of explosiveness as Swift out of the backfield. That may not matter much this week, though. The Bengals rank at the bottom of the league in nearly every statistical category against the run. Maybe the bigger concern is that of quarterback Caleb Williams. Following a strong start to the season, Williams has not thrown a single touchdown pass the last two games, while turning the ball over a couple of times. Conversely, the Bengals’ secondary is equally atrocious. So, this might be a get right game for all of the above.

A bitter row has broken out between a historic Manchester pub and developers over ‘reprehensible’ plans to build apartments next door. The Marble Arch is the last sloped-floor pub in Manchester, a relic from when barrels were rolled into the premises. Owners of the grade-II listed Rochdale Road boozer, featured in landmark Channel 4 drama It’s A Sin , say they are ‘perplexed’ by developer McGoff’s plans to develop the car park next to them, after understanding the land was earmarked for a public square in a wider regeneration. But in a statement issued this evening (October 31), McGoff has said it is 'unaware' of any plans for a public park. And suggested that that such a use would be "extremely unlikely". McGoff also said it had been honest and open during meetings with the pub's owners about its plans would "have a positive regeneration impact" on the area. A spokesperson said: “We recognize Manchester's need to meet increasing demand for high-quality city centre homes and have previously raised no objections to considerable development in our vicinity. “We supported Mulbury Homes' previous application to develop 87 Rochdale Road, despite its scale and prominence, and have endured substantial disruption to our business operations as a result. “Our objection to these plans is not a blanket opposition to development. Rather, we believe the proposal represents a substantial detriment to the area's cultural capital, diminishing the prominence of a nationally significant heritage asset and causing irrevocable damage to the area's character.” Local councillors also appear to be backing the pub, with a joint statement from Coun Sam Wheeler and Coun Jon-Connor Lyons, himself chair of Manchester council’s planning committee, slamming the plans for a 15-storey tower as ‘reprehensible’. The Labour duo said: "The Marble Arch is a Manchester institution known around the world. The proposed development would clearly cause harm to this treasured community pub. “It is reprehensible that a developer thinks they can turn up in our city, impact a hundred year old business, ignore the democratically agreed regeneration framework and further burden the local infrastructure we all pay for, all to profit on building another tower with no social homes. "The developer needs to do a full and proper rethink in collaboration with the local community and elected members to deliver something that makes Manchester better, not worse.” Sean O'Mahoney, chair of CAMRA’s central Manchester branch, added: "High‑rise development directly alongside a listed Victorian pub would fundamentally alter its character and threaten what makes it special.” A spokesperson from the McGoff Group said: “We have no knowledge of the ‘public square’ referenced by the Marble Arch pub and feel that such a use would be extremely unlikely given that commercial businesses were operating from this location, comprising of a car park and retail shop. We wouldn’t like to speculate where such a rumour could have come from. “We have had several separate meetings with the pub management and planning consultant, at which we have been very honest and open about our proposed plans which will have a positive regeneration impact on this key gateway, representing the start of the Council’s ambitions plans for the Victoria North corridor. “We will transform this under-utilised land by providing circa 145 much needed new homes, a commercial unit and new public realm, which will include tree lined pathways, lawns and seating areas. The restoration of a historic Manchester building, currently housing a derelict shop, is incorporated in the plans, allowing this iconic building to return to its former glory with character-filled architecture and style. “Our proposed plans, which have been designed with green credentials at the forefront, will only serve to enhance the historic character of the Marble Arch pub and increase footfall. In fact, Manchester is renowned for its long-established pubs, many of which are surrounded by contemporary new developments and continue to thrive, including The Deansgate , The Black Friar and Picadilly Central to name a few.
