The Pretty Reckless Repeats No. 1 Streak on Mainstream Rock Airplay Chart With ‘For I Am Death’

Skip to main content The Pretty Reckless Lewis Cater Trending on Billboard To open its career on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart, The Pretty Reckless rattled off four No. 1s in a row. Nearly a decade later, the Taylor Momsen-led band has done it again. The Pretty Reckless See latest videos, charts and news “For I Am Death,” The Pretty Reckless’ first new music since its 2021 album Death by Rock and Roll, climbs to No. 1 on the ranking dated Nov. 8. It’s the band’s eighth leader and fourth straight, a streak that dates to 2020, when “Death by Rock and Roll” led for three weeks, followed by reigns for “And So It Went” and “Only Love Can Save Me Now” in 2021. Riley Green & Ella Langley Notch Second Top 10 Together on Country Airplay Chart Zohran Mamdani Describes His NYC Mayoral Campaign in 3 Songs: 'Shout-Out to Taylor Swift' Common Recalls Fat Joe Saving His Life During Feud With Mack 10 & Ice Cube: 'You Settled That' In 2013, The Pretty Reckless made its maiden appearance on the tally with “Heaven Knows,” a song that ended up reigning for four weeks beginning in March 2014. That kicked off a streak of four consecutive No. 1s, with “Heaven Knows” followed by “Messed Up World” (2014), “Follow Me Down” (2015) and “Take Me Down” (2016). In fact, 80% of the band’s charted titles have reached No. 1, while 90% have been in the top two. Easy math there, as The Pretty Reckless has charted 10 entries on Mainstream Rock Airplay; its non-No. 1s are the No. 2-peaking “Oh My God” and the band’s only song to peak outside the top two, “Back to the River,” a No. 12 hit, both in 2017. With eight No. 1s, The Pretty Reckless solely boasts the most by a woman-fronted group (or, for that matter, women soloists) in the Mainstream Rock Airplay chart’s 44-year history. Previously, the band was tied with Halestorm, which notched its seventh in 2024. (Of note: Linkin Park, currently co-led by Emily Armstrong, has 13 No. 1s, but only three since she joined.) Concurrently, “For I Am Death” ranks at No. 7 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock & Alternative Airplay chart with 3.2 million in audience in the week ending Oct. 30, up 12%, according to Luminate. That’s a new weekly high in impressions for the song, although its chart-position best so far remains No. 5, achieved on the Nov. 1 tally. It’s The Pretty Reckless’ top-performing song on the survey, surpassing a pair of No. 6 peaks via “Death by Rock and Roll” and “Only Love Can Save Me Now.” On the most recently published, multimetric Hot Hard Rock Songs chart (dated Nov. 1, reflecting data Oct. 17-23), “For I Am Death” debuted at No. 23. In addition to its radio airplay, the tune drew 240,000 official U.S. streams. Although The Pretty Reckless hasn’t yet announced a proper follow-up to 2021’s Death by Rock and Roll, Oct. 31 brings the release of a new holiday EP, Taylor Momsen’s Pretty Reckless Christmas, with Momsen reprising her vocal on “Where Are You Christmas?” from the 2000 film How the Grinch Stole Christmas, in which she portrayed Cindy Lou Who. The Mariah Carey co-write has become a perennial holiday hit for Faith Hill since 2000. All Billboard charts dated Nov. 8 will update Tuesday, Nov. 4, on Billboard.com. JAMB Conducts CBT Exams For 450 HoS Staff

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has conducted promotional examination for about 450 junior workers under the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation. JAMB Director in charge of Abuja zone, Zainab Hamzat, who spoke to newsmen after the Computer Based Test (CBT) promotional examination on Friday in Kubwa, Abuja, noted that 476 staff under the HoS were expected to participate in the promotion exercise but only 450 workers showed up for the exam. She said: “Everything went well as usual. We call it third party exam. It is a promotion exam for HoS. All their officers sat for the exam for the purpose of promotion. “We had two sessions – morning and afternoon. In the morning we expected 250 but 232 were present. In the afternoon we expected 226 and eight were absent. The exam was smooth. Everything went well. “The examination was for all the junior staff of HoS. We had immigration officers, fire fighters, civil defence and other paramilitary organisations under HoS for the examination.” Also speaking, the Director of Ade-Ola International School, Kubwa, Mercy Olaosegbe lauded JAMB for setting high standards in professional examination. “The examination went well. We have all the facilities to conduct this examination. JAMB will not allow you to participate in these exams if your facilities are not up to standard. Because our centre is doing well, we have been participating in third party examination organised by JAMB.”

Emmerdale fans 'rumble' truth behind 'murder' in devastating April scenes

Emmerdale fans 'rumble' the truth that Ray and Celia are hiding from April after her "murder" twist. On Friday (October 31), Halloween may have arrived in the Dales, but April Dingle was living a real nightmare after she found herself in a devastating situation. Over the last few months, April and Dylan have found themselves firmly under the thumb of Ray and Celia as they groomed them into being part of their drug empire. Having to pay off their debt they owe drug boss Celia, April was tasked with sleeping with a man named Callum during Thursday's (October 30) installment. Pressurised into the situation, April was visibly uncomfortable as Callum commented on how young she looked, and later tried to force her into having sex. Although she said no, he told her that wasn't an option and that he'd locked the door so she'd have to stay all night long. The episode ended on a cliffhanger as April whacked him over the head with a bottle, to which he fell onto the bed unconscious. On Friday, viewers tuned into see if Callum was actually dead and as April confided in Ray and Celia she begged for their help. Ray went to check on Callum and could be heard calling an unknown number, asking for a van to be brought to the address. However, some viewers are convinced that Callum isn't actually dead and that they'll use it against April to drag her further into their dark world. On X (formerly known as Twitter ), @jamieprestigio1 wrote: "Anyone else not believe April killed that man and it’s a trick by Celia/Ray to keep her under their control?" @fake_tv_chef agreed: "Was I not paying enough attention? They really didn't confirm he was dead did they? I think Celia and Ray will make April believe she killed him to hold it over her and own her." Underneath the YouTube upload of the episode, @TeamBabylon-dp2xf echoed: "I bet he's not even dead. They both made her think that so they can make her carry on working for them." Emmerdale airs on weekdays at 7:30pm on ITV1 and is available to stream on ITVX.

The £23 cream that 'smooths out neck wrinkles' so well one sells every 30 seconds

When it comes to skincare, most of us will heap serums, creams and masks onto our faces in a bid to turn back the clock on ageing skin. But there’s one area hiding in plain sight that often gives away our age first - the neck. Thankfully, one cult-favourite cream has been dubbed the ultimate fix , and now, it’s on sale for less than £23. PRAI Beauty have been dubbed the ‘neckxperts’ of the industry, claiming to have ‘transformed over one million necks’. Having become staples at M&S and Boots, now they’re available for a fraction of the price directly from the brand’s website - but only for a few days. The brand has dropped its biggest sale of the year, and it’s even better than Black Friday. To celebrate founder Cathy Kangas’ birthday, the brand is offering a massive 31% off sitewide from October 31 to November 2, giving shoppers just three days to stock up on their favourites. Among the standout deals is the bestselling Ageless Throat & Décolletage Crème, now £22.77, down from £33 for a 50ml pot. The cream is so popular, it’s said to sell one every 30 seconds. PRAI’s original neck cream has achieved something of legendary status, selling over 10 million jars globally and earning over a thousand five star reviews. Its clinically proven formula works to firm, lift, and tone the delicate skin on the neck and décolletage, with visible results in as little as 7 days, the brand reports. The formula uses something called Sepilift DPHP technology, which helps restore elasticity and support collagen, combined with Hyaluronic Acid for deep hydration. It also features Shea Butter and Squalane to lock in moisture, Mulberry, Saxifrage, and Grapeseed Extracts to fade age spots, and Vitamins A, E, and F to rejuvenate and protect. Elsewhere, Trinny London’s The Elevator is another popular choice . As well as working to smooth, firm and restructure for a visibly lifted, defined neck and décolleté, the £69 formula also contains encapsulated alpha arbutin to help prevent and visibly fade dark spots. For those who prefer a serum, the No7 Laboratories Firming Booster Serum is usually £34.95 but is regularly reduced to a tenner £10 as part of the health and beauty retailer’s £10 Tuesday sale. The standout anti-ageing ingredient in this product is Matrixyl 3000+, and contains four times more firming complex than the brand’s other serums, specifically designed to target areas prone to sagging. The PRAI cream has earned an impressive rating of 4.6 out of five . One 67-year-old fan said they’d tried countless alternatives but always came back to PRAI. They said: “Love this cream it really works for me. I have tried others but I always come back to this one and at 67 I am now sticking with it. It smooths out your neck lines and wrinkles like magic.” Another wrote: “I have tried lots & lots of different neck creams even really expensive ones but this has been my 'go to' for the last 5 years - I would not use anything else as it does the job better than any other - I would and have recommended this product and will use 'forever'.” “I’ve used Clarins super restorative neck and décolletage cream but got a small size of this to try due to the reviews,” said another. “Game changer. I'm swapping to this for my neck. Brilliant.” Not everyone has been quite as impressed with their results, though. “I like this product as a moisturiser it sinks into my skin and leaves it looking healthier but I haven’t noticed any difference in the texture or firmness of my throat or décolletage as yet I will continue using with my fingers crossed.” Another review read: “Started using this product having noticed my neck losing elasticity and becoming crepey. Within a week I noticed a difference and now after 2 months I’m delighted with the improvement . I was even considering a cosmetic procedure but will hold off now with such great results.” PRAI’s current promotion sees 31% knocked off the price of all products on their site. The discount is automatically applied at the checkout, with no code needed.

Saints’ Alvin Kamara Week 9 status updated as trade deadline nears

The New Orleans Saints are set to take on the Los Angeles Rams in Week 9 as the team aims to earn just its second win of the season. With the NFL trade deadline right around the corner, running back Alvin Kamara gets an injury update for Sunday’s contest. Reports indicate that Kamara, who is dealing with an ankle injury, is deemed questionable for the game against the Rams, according to Jeff Nowak of Audacy Sports and WWL Radio. However, it sounds like the 30-year-old running back is trending in the right direction. Nowak also shares injury updates for wide receiver Rashid Shaheed and cornerback Alontae Taylor. “Alvin Kamara (ankle), Rashid Shaheed (hip), and Alontae Taylor (shoulder) will all be listed as questionable, but Kellen Moore said all three are trending positively.” The nine-year pro has not missed a single contest yet this season despite dealing with an ankle injury for several weeks now. It’s been a rough go for Kamara and the Saints, as the offense has largely struggled throughout the 2025-26 campaign. Through eight games played, Alvin Kamara has recorded 363 rushing yards, 147 receiving yards, and just one touchdown. His rushing yards per game (45.4) and receiving yards per game (18.4) are both the lowest of his career. New Orleans will likely continue monitoring the five-time Pro Bowler in the coming days before making a final decision on his playing status in Week 9. With Alvin Kamara’s name floating around the rumor mill as a potential trade candidate before the Nov. 4 deadline, the Saints may want him to be as healthy as possible to remain valuable in the trade market. But that’s assuming teams are calling for Kamara’s availability.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: The Trump administration has been offering up Alaska and its energy resources in recent trade negotiations with allies in Asia, with many of the discussions hinging on a long-awaited liquefied natural gas pipeline to be built. At least one LNG analyst is doubtful it ever will be. “The idea of the Alaska LNG project being built still remains…unlikely, because there’s so many other LNG projects in the world that make so much more sense, commercially,” Ira Joseph, a senior research associate at the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University, told Daily on Energy. “As I’ve always said, if this project made sense, it would have been built 40 years ago.” BESSENT SETS BOLD TIMELINE TO END U.S. RELIANCE ON CHINESE RARE EARTHS: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the United States could end its reliance on Chinese rare earths within two years. Bessent’s comments occur just one day after President Donald Trump met with Chinese President Xi Jinping, where the two agreed to a truce that involved China pausing its recent export restrictions on five rare earth elements and related technologies. The secretary told the Financial Times that the two leaders reached an “equilibrium,” but noted that soon China would no longer be able to use critical minerals as a tool for leverage. “I don’t think they’re able to do it now because we have offsetting measures,” Bessent told the publication, adding that the U.S. would be able to find alternative supplies of rare earths in no more than 12 to 24 months. It has often been suggested that producing rare earth elements domestically could take a decade or longer, due to the lengthy permitting process. “China has alerted everyone to the danger. They’ve made a real mistake,” Bessent added. “It’s one thing to put the gun on the table. It’s another thing to fire shots in the air.” As a reminder: China agreed to pause its recent export restrictions for one year. The restriction required companies to gain permission from the Chinese Ministry to export rare earths or related technologies. But, the truce between Trump and Xi did not address previous restrictions, where China suspended the exports of seven other types of rare earth metal and magnets. Bessent said he expects the deal to be signed in the next couple of weeks. Read more on what Bessent had to say about Trump’s trip to Asia here. EXXON AND CHEVRON BOOST PRODUCTION OUTPUT: Exxon Mobil and Chevron have increased their output in the third quarter despite forecasts of oil prices set to decline. Exxon said in its third-quarter report that it achieved another production record of nearly 1.7 million oil-equivalent barrels per day in the Permian Basin. The company reported exceeding 700,000 barrels per day at its operations in Guyana. Chevron said it had record production of 4.1 million barrels of oil per day in the third quarter, 21% higher than in the same quarter last year. Both oil companies also reported declines in earnings. Exxon said it earned $7.55 billion, or $1.76 per share, compared to this time last year, when it earned $8.61 billion, or $1.92 per share. Chevron’s earnings in the third quarter were $3.6 billion, or $1.85 per share, which is down 21% from last year. The Energy Information Administration anticipates that the price of Brent crude oil will average $62 per barrel in the fourth quarter of 2025 and drop to $52 per barrel in 2026. Read more by Maydeen here. ‘DRILL, BABY, DRILL’ UPDATE: After a couple of weeks of relief, domestic oil and gas drillers saw the number of active rigs in the U.S. drop again this week. The details: Baker Hughes reported this afternoon that there are four fewer active rigs in the U.S. than last week – and 39 fewer than this time last year. Broken down further, the weekly loss was made up of two land-based rigs and two offshore rigs. While the natural gas sector actually added four new rigs, the overall industry lost six oil rigs and two additional miscellaneous rigs, creating the four lost. In total, there are roughly 546 active rigs in the U.S. as of today. Where prices stand: While the price of oil was up this afternoon from yesterday, both international and domestic benchmarks were headed for weekly losses and third consecutive monthly declines. Right around 2 p.m. EST, Brent Crude was up by just 0.06% and selling at $65.06 per barrel. West Texas Intermediate also increased by 0.34% and was priced at $60.91 per barrel. ILLINOIS LAWMAKERS PASS BILL LIFTING LARGE-NUCLEAR BAN: The Illinois legislature has passed a bill that would lift the state’s longstanding ban on new large-scale nuclear power plants. The details: Yesterday evening, state lawmakers approved Senate Bill 25, also known as the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act. The sweeping piece of energy legislation has been debated and negotiated for more than a year and will offer new subsidies for energy storage projects including battery installations, according to Capital News Illinois. These subsidies mirror current state incentives for renewable energy projects, and are supported by a new charge for ratepayers to offset the costs. While critics say this will be a guaranteed rate increase for consumers, proponents argue that the installation of new energy storage systems will ultimately result in lower electricity bills. One measure included in the bill that reportedly received substantial bipartisan support was to lift the state’s moratorium on constructing new nuclear power plants. This comes just two years after Illinois partially lifted its ban to allow for the construction of small modular reactors. Gov. J.B. Pritzker has pledged to sign the bill. EU ON COURSE TO PHASE OUT RUSSIAN GAS: Turkish state-run media is now reporting that the European Union is on track to phase out Russian gas imports by the 2028 target. Tatiana Mindekova, a policy advisor on European energy with energy think tank Ember, confirmed with Anadolu Agency this week that the bloc has made substantial progress toward completely ending Russian energy imports. Mindekova said that, in 2021, Russia made up around 40-45% of Europe’s supply of gas. By the end of last year, the bloc had successfully slashed that below 20%. The EU is aiming to phase out Russian oil fully by 2028, a plan that faces opposition from EU members Hungary and Slovakia, the primary European countries still importing large amounts of fossil fuels from Moscow. Potential delays: Mindekova pointed to this divergence within the EU as one reason the phase-out could be delayed. She also warned that liquefied natural gas imports from Russia continue to rise, with volumes up by 29% in September. Another potential cause for delay stems from Russia’s shadow fleet of tankers that continue to allow Russian gas to enter EU markets. Additionally, Mindekova warned of new LNG terminals or pipelines that would increase reliance on Russian imports, as well as market volatility. The U.S. view: The Trump administration is eager for the EU to accelerate this phase-out of Russian gas, to further open the door for U.S. producers to increase exports to Europe. Last month, Energy Secretary Chris Wright urged European allies to further cut off Russian imports as a way to reduce Moscow’s energy revenues that have gone on to fund the war in Ukraine. “If the Europeans drew a line and said: ‘We’re not going to buy more Russian gas, we’re not going to buy Russian oil.’ Would that have a positive influence on the U.S. leaning in more aggressively [on sanctions] as well? Absolutely,” Wright said at the time. MORE EU DIVISION…BUT ON CLIMATE GOALS: The European Union is reportedly still split over new emissions reductions targets for 2040 that it had hoped to bring to the U.N.’s Climate Change Conference (COP30) in Brazil next month. The details: A new Reuters report reveals that the EU may fail to come to an agreement ahead of COP30, where the bloc has hoped to lead in tackling climate change. One diplomat told the outlet that the EU was “walking a knife’s edge” when it came to forming an agreement. The biggest point of contention in the ongoing debates is reportedly revolving around the use of foreign carbon credits from developing countries to help EU member states hit the 2040 targets. Some nations, like Germany and France, have called for these credits to cover 3-5% of emissions cuts. Others, such as Poland, would like a larger percentage, while some states like Denmark have expressed interest in not allowing the use of foreign credits at all. The most recent draft proposal obtained by Reuters reportedly showed there was no agreement on the foreign credit offset percentage. ICYMI – SHELL PULLS OUT OF OFFSHORE WIND PROJECT: Oil and gas major Shell has officially ended its involvement in an offshore wind project that had been set to be built off the coast of New Jersey but was canceled over the summer. The Atlantic Shores offshore wind project was first launched as a joint venture between EDF Renewables and Shell. The project faced hurdle after hurdle this year, with Shell initially announcing in February that it would be pausing its involvement. The New Jersey Board of Public Utilities then decided it would cancel the state’s fourth offshore wind solicitation, which would have allowed offshore wind developers to offer up proposals to deliver offshore wind energy to the state in exchange for financial backing. By June of this year, top executives with the project said they would terminate its renewable energy credits and release it from all associated obligations. Atlantic Shores Offshore Wind Chief Executive Officer Joris Veldhoven described the move as the “closing of a chapter,” but insisted it was not the end for Atlantic Shores. At the time, the project blamed the president’s crackdown on the offshore wind industry as the reason behind its cancellation. Shell formally withdrew from the project this week, assigning its 50% membership interests to EDF Renewables. “This decision was taken in line with Shell’s power strategy, where we continue to maximize the value of our platforms and high-grade our portfolio, shifting away from capital-intensive generation projects to assets that support our trading and retail strengths,” Shell said in a press release. Usha not Christian, has no plans to convert: U.S. V-P Vance amid row over comments on interfaith marriage

Amid criticism over comments about his interfaith marriage, Vice President J.D. Vance said on Friday (October 31, 2025) that his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, has no plans to convert to Christianity but added that he hoped “she may one day see things as I do.” Mr. Vance is facing flak over his comments regarding his interfaith marriage after saying he eventually hopes that Usha, who grew up in a Hindu household, “is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church.” A post on social media said, "It’s weird to throw your wife’s religion under the bus, in public, for a moment’s acceptance by groypers.” Responding to this, Mr. Vance hit back, saying, “What a disgusting comment, and it's hardly been the only one along these lines. “First off, the question was from a person seemingly to my left, about my interfaith marriage. I'm a public figure, and people are curious, and I wasn't going to avoid the question,” he said in the response posted on X. “Second, my Christian faith tells me the Gospel is true and is good for human beings. My wife--as I said at the TPUSA--is the most amazing blessing I have in my life. She herself encouraged me to reengage with my faith many years ago. "She is not a Christian and has no plans to convert, but like many people in an interfaith marriage--or any interfaith relationship--I hope she may one day see things as I do. Regardless, I'll continue to love and support her and talk to her about faith and life and everything else, because she's my wife,” he said. Mr. Vance made the initial comments on Wednesday at a Turning Point USA event at the University of Mississippi. He was confronted by a young South Asian woman over his faith and his inter-religion marriage to Usha as well as over the Trump administration’s policies on immigration. Responding to her, Mr. Vance said that on most Sundays, Usha goes to church with him. "... I've told her, and I've said publicly, and I'll say now in front of 10,000 of my closest friends, do I hope eventually that she is somehow moved by the same thing that I was moved in by church? Yeah, I honestly do wish that, because I believe in the Christian gospel, and I hope eventually my wife comes to see it the same way," he said. "But if she doesn't, then God says everybody has free will, and so that doesn't cause a problem for me. That's something you work out with your friends, with your family, with the person that you love.” In his response to the social media post, Mr. Vance further said that posts like this reek of "anti-Christian bigotry". "Yes, Christians have beliefs. And yes, those beliefs have many consequences, one of which is that we want to share them with other people. That is a completely normal thing, and anyone who's telling you otherwise has an agenda,” he said.

Pakistan and Afghanistan agree to maintain a ceasefire -- for now. Here's what to know

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — After five days of on-and-off talks in Istanbul to resolve hostilities that flared in the first half of October, Pakistan and Afghanistan agreed to continue a ceasefire they arrived at earlier this month, Turkey's Foreign Ministry announced Thursday. In a statement, the ministry said the next round of talks would take place on Nov. 6: "All parties have agreed to put in place a monitoring and verification mechanism that will ensure maintenance of peace and imposing penalty on the violating party." The ceasefire came after more than a week of cross-border gunfire and targeted strikes inside Afghanistan killed dozens on both sides, including civilians. The agreement put a pause on the most intense fighting between the two countries in years. Trade between Pakistan and Afghanistan has ground to a halt as major border crossings remain closed. Analysts warn that the conflict, which has deep roots, could reignite and destabilize the region. Here's what to know. What's at stake? The main issue between the neighboring countries is rising militancy in Pakistan's mountainous borderlands, where the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, also known as the Pakistani Taliban, has ramped up attacks in the years since the Taliban took over Afghanistan in 2021, following the withdrawal of U.S. forces. The TTP is closely aligned with the Afghan Taliban, and Pakistan accuses Afghanistan's Taliban rulers of providing them a base and failing to rein them in when they orchestrate deadly attacks in Pakistan — all of which Afghanistan's Taliban denies. Each country blamed the other for a breakdown in talks earlier this week. In a post on X, Pakistan's Information Minister Ataullah Tarar said Afghanistan's Taliban "have always remained indifferent to Pakistan's losses. ... Pakistan's patience has run its course." Afghan state broadcaster RTA accused Pakistan of "irrational demands." Pakistan's increasingly bold military actions inside Afghanistan reflect its hardening stance toward cross-border militant groups, says Muhammad Amir Rana, director of Islamabad's Pak Institute for Peace Studies, an independent think tank. "This is signaling to the [Afghan] Taliban that if you haven't changed your attitudes or policies supporting the TTP and other terrorist organizations inside Pakistan, Pakistan can retaliate," he says. What sparked this month's fighting? The conflict began after TTP militants ambushed a Pakistani army convoy on Oct. 8, killing 11 soldiers near the Afghan border. The TTP aims to overthrow the Pakistani government and impose hardline Islamic rule, as the Taliban did in Afghanistan. Afghanistan then blamed Pakistan for multiple strikes inside its territory on Oct. 9, including in its capital, Kabul. Pakistan has neither officially confirmed nor denied carrying out the strikes. Two nights later, Afghan forces fired at Pakistan's border posts in retaliation, leading to back-and-forth gunfire along the border. Cross-border fighting flared up again days later, before both sides agreed to an initial truce, which was later extended in Doha, Qatar, on Oct. 19. Before ceasefire talks began in Doha, Pakistan also launched what security officials called targeted strikes against militants in Afghanistan's eastern province of Paktika. Up to now, talks with the Taliban about the TTP have yielded little for Pakistan, analysts say. "Pakistani attempts to talk to the Taliban to convince them to do something against the TTP have failed," says Abdul Basit, senior associate fellow at the S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies in Singapore. Islamabad has also tried to pressure the Taliban by deporting Afghan refugees. Who are the Pakistani Taliban? The TTP emerged in 2007 in response to Pakistan's military support of the U.S. fight against the Taliban in Afghanistan. It has primarily targeted Pakistani security personnel in recent years, but also has claimed responsibility for horrific attacks on civilians, including one in 2014 that killed more than 100 Pakistani schoolchildren. Its fighters share close ideological ties and battlefield experience with Afghanistan's Taliban. The group has seen a revival in the past four years, after counterterrorism campaigns significantly weakened it around a decade ago. An independent conflict monitor found the TTP was behind 600 attacks against Pakistani security forces in the past year alone. That's compared to an estimated 67 attacks the year before the Taliban took power in Afghanistan, according to the Pak Institute for Peace Studies. Pakistan has been closely connected to the Taliban since it cultivated the Afghan group in the 1990s. It was accused of covertly supporting the Taliban through the U.S. war in Afghanistan, something Islamabad denies. How might this play out? President Trump said earlier this week on the sidelines of a regional summit in Malaysia that the conflict would be an easy fix. "I heard that Pakistan and Afghanistan have started up, but I'll get that solved very quickly," he said. In a post on X, Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid said Thursday that Afghanistan, "like other neighboring countries, also desires positive relations with Pakistan and it adheres to the principles of mutual respect, non-interference in internal affairs, and not posing a threat to anyone." Earlier this year, Pakistan and Afghanistan held a trilateral meeting with China to discuss issues including counterterrorism and trade, raising hopes of better relations. But ties are meanwhile growing between Afghanistan and India, Pakistan's eastern neighbor and rival. Asif, Pakistan's defense minister, said this week that "Kabul is a tool for Delhi." This month's Pakistan-Afghanistan fighting coincided with the Taliban foreign minister's first official visit to India. "It's not for a lack of diplomacy or dialogue that we are where we are right now," says Asfandyar Mir, senior fellow for South Asia at the Stimson Center in Washington, D.C. The current ceasefire, he says, suggests that for now, Pakistan has been able to corner the Taliban with its military escalation. But he expects the Taliban to continue tacitly supporting the TTP by stalling on Pakistani requests to act against the group in Afghanistan. He says the Afghan Taliban's support for the TTP is a continued source of regional instability that could lead to more attacks by the group in Pakistan and more intense military action by Pakistan inside Afghanistan. Basit, from Singapore's S. Rajaratnam School of International Studies, puts it starkly: "Border tensions will play out at a new level," he warns. "If they were simmering, now they will be boiling."

NBPA releases statement in support of WNBA players amid CBA uncertainty

Friday marked an important date for the WNBA and the players union in that it was the deadline for both sides to agree upon a new CBA. That failed to happen with both sides still far apart in CBA negotiations, and both the WNBA and the players agreed to extend the deadline another 30 days to avoid a lockout. As the deadline approached, several other players unions released statements in solidarity with the WNBPA, including the NBPA. In a brief statement released to social media, the NBPA joined the NFLPA, MLBPA and MLSPA this week in standing in solitary with the WNBA’s players union amid the ongoing CBA negotiations. “We stand with the women of the WNBPA as they work toward a collective bargaining agreement that reflects their value and impact both on and off the court,” the NBPA statement said. The NBPA also posted an image affirming their solitary with WNBA players. The WNBA has hit a period of record popularity, with Game 1 of the WNBA Finals breaking viewership records. Even the WNBA Semifinal series between the Las Vegas Aces and Indiana Fever, despite Caitlin Clark out due to injury, was the most-watched semifinal series in WNBA playoff history. But during the playoffs, tensions between the league and its players boiled over with Minnesota Lynx star and WNBPA vice president Napheesa Collier lambasting the league and Commissioner Cathy Engelbert over multiple grievances. Collier’s statement drew support from players across the league. At the forefront of the CBA negotiations is the issue of revenue sharing. There are plenty of misconceptions and misinformation circulating the social media world, but WNBA players have always been clear about what it is they expect in terms of potential revenue sharing and salary. Should the players and the league fail to come to an agreement on a new CBA, the next step would be a lockout.

Giants legend Eli Manning unveils son’s Jaxson Dart Halloween costume

As promised, legendary New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning‘s son has dressed up as rookie signal-caller Jaxson Dart for Halloween. Manning took to X, formerly Twitter, to share a picture of his son Charlie’s costume. Charlie had a Dart jersey on and his iconic white sleeves. The costume was complete with Dart’s signature necklace that he wears on gamedays, and his headband. Charlie said he wanted to dress up as his favorite @Giants quarterback ever for Halloween… guess he got his wish. pic.twitter.com/oQXmuIMncv — Eli Manning (@EliManning) October 31, 2025 “Charlie said he wanted to dress up as his favorite [Giants] quarterback ever for Halloween… guess he got his wish,” Manning joked. What does Giants QB Jaxson Dart think of Eli Manning’s son being him for Halloween? Mandatory Credit: Ron Chenoy-Imagn Images Reporters asked Dart about Manning’s son dressing up as him for Halloween. The rookie quarterback seemed flattered, calling it awesome. “I think it’s awesome,” Dart said. “I’ve met Charlie a few times, obviously, [I’ve] been around Eli a lot, and I think that maybe, like he said, he’s a little disappointed it wasn’t him, but it’s just a cool relationship, and I think it’s awesome.” Dart seemed excited for his first Halloween in the New York area. He said, “I love Halloween,” while talking about having candy ready to hand out to trick-or-treaters. The Giants are gearing up for a game against the San Francisco 49ers. They are coming off back-to-back losses to the Denver Broncos and Philadelphia Eagles. They blew the Broncos game after being up 19-0 going into the fourth quarter. The following week, they were blown out by the Eagles, two weeks after they did the same to them. Now, the 2-6 Giants are hoping to stop the bleeding against the 49ers. They will then face the Chicago Bears, Green Bay Packers, and Detroit Lions in the following weeks. So far, Dart has thrown 984 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions. He has also rushed for 195 yards and four touchdowns.

Breast Cancer Awareness: Dr K.B. Tandoh Outreach offers free screening to 200 residents of Asunafo North

The Dr K.B. Tandoh Outreach has offered free breast cancer screening and general wellness checks to over 200 men and women in the Asunafo North Municipality of the Ahafo region in Goaso. The outreach team, led by Dr Kwabena Bempah Tandoh, a former Deputy Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES ), provided comprehensive services including breast examinations, HIV testing and counselling, as well as checks on height, weight and body temperature. Dr Tandoh, also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO)of Orpington Group, explained that the outreach was created to strengthen education, health, youth development, agriculture and general community welfare, with this health initiative specifically designed to raise awareness of breast cancer, promote early detection and encourage timely treatment. He pledged to replicate the screening exercise in other communities, including Mim, Asumura, Ayomso, and their adjoining villages. “Good health among residents of a country improves productivity,” he said, urging citizens to take ownership of their health through regular exercise, healthy lifestyles, and early medical consultation. The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies breast cancer as the most common cancer globally, accounting for 2.3 million new cases and around 670,000 deaths in 2022. One in twenty women worldwide will be diagnosed with the disease during her lifetime. If unchecked, new annual cases could reach 3.2 million and deaths 1.1 million by 2050 - a 68 percent surge. Survival rates exceed 90 percent in high-income countries but fall to around 40 percent in sub-Saharan Africa, due to late diagnosis and inadequate access to treatment. Across the WHO African Region, about 146,000 new cases and 71,000 deaths were recorded in 2022. In Ghana, approximately 16,000 new cases occur each year, with nearly half of patients dying - a grim reflection of delayed reporting, limited infrastructure and public misconception. At the Goaso event, Hannah Gyekyewaah, Midwife at the Breast and Cervical Cancer Unit of the Goaso Government Hospital, dispelled myths linking breast cancer to bra wearing, deodorant use, breast size or spiritual causes. “These are false and not scientifically proven,” she said. “Women should instead perform monthly self-breast checks and promptly report any unusual lumps or changes to healthcare professionals.” One participant, Sophia Omare, lauded the exercise, noting: “A healthy people live in a wealthy nation. Dr Tandoh’s initiative has given us confidence to take our health seriously.” The WHO’s Global Breast Cancer Initiative stresses that community-based screenings like the Dr K.B. Tandoh Outreach bridge healthcare gaps, especially in rural and semi-urban Ghana, where late-stage diagnosis remains common. Early detection not only improves survival chances but also reduces treatment costs and psychological distress. By combining education, screening and counselling, such programmes become a lifeline for underserved populations.

Food Systems Are the Missing Link in Social Development

Food Systems Are the Missing Link in Social Development

Opinion by George Conway (mogadishu / rome)Friday, October 31, 2025Inter Press Service MOGADISHU / ROME, October 31 (IPS) - Food has always been political. It decides whether families thrive or fall into poverty, whether young people see a future of opportunity or despair, whether communities feel included or pushed aside. Food is also a basic human right – one recognized in international law but too often unrealized in practice. Guaranteeing that right requires viewing food not as a form of emergency relief, but as the cornerstone of sustainable social development. Despite this, food systems rarely feature in discussions of social policy, even though they underpin the same goals world leaders will take up at the World Social Summit in Doha this November: eradicating poverty, securing decent work, and advancing inclusion. Food as social infrastructure Food is often treated as a humanitarian issue, a matter for relief in times of drought or war. But look closer, and it is the ultimate social policy. Food systems sustain half the world’s population – around 3.8 billion people – through farming, processing, transport, and retail, most of it informal and rural. They determine how families spend their income, who can afford a healthy diet, who learns and thrives in school, and who is left behind. Food systems mirror our societies – where women bear the greatest burden of unpaid work, where child labour denies children education, and where Indigenous and marginalized communities are excluded. Seen through this lens, food is social infrastructure: the invisible system that underpins poverty reduction, livelihoods, and inclusion. When it functions, societies grow more equal and resilient. When it falters, inequality and exclusion deepen. Pathways out of poverty Across low-income countries, agriculture and food processing remain the single largest source of livelihoods. National food systems transformations are showing that targeted investments here can have outsized effects on poverty reduction. In Rwanda, investment in farmer cooperatives and value chains has enabled smallholders to capture more of the value of their crops, lifting entire communities. In Brazil, school feeding programs that source from family farmers have created stable markets for the rural poor while improving child nutrition. And in Somalia, the work of the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub with the Resident Coordinator’s Office and national partners is helping to strengthen pastoralist value chains and improve access to markets. By connecting local producers with regional buyers and embedding resilience into social protection systems, Somalia is charting a path out of chronic vulnerability toward sustainable livelihoods. This approach combines food systems transformation with climate-smart social protection – linking producers and markets with safety nets that improve nutrition, boost inclusion, and attract investment. It is a model built on social and economic partnerships between government, civil society, and the UN, and is designed for lasting impact. These examples highlight a simple truth: inclusive, resilient, and sustainable food systems can be among the most powerful anti-poverty tools available. Work that is productive – and dignified Food systems already employ one in three workers worldwide. But too many of these jobs are precarious, low-paid, and unsafe. The transformation now underway is beginning to change that. Digital and market innovations are linking small producers to buyers directly, bypassing exploitative middlemen. Climate-resilient practices are reducing the boom-and-bust cycles that devastate rural incomes. In Somalia, where livelihoods are often informal and climate shocks are frequent, strengthening food systems can expand opportunity and stability. By linking pastoralist value chains to markets and building skills for youth in food production and trade, food systems can turn subsistence into sustainable, resilient futures. This shift matters: food systems can and must become a primary engine of decent, dignified employment in the global economy – particularly for women and youth. Food as inclusion Food is also identity and belonging. Policies that make nutritious diets affordable, protect Indigenous knowledge, and integrate marginalized producers into value chains are acts of social inclusion. In many countries, universal school meal programs have emerged as one of the most powerful equalizers. They reduce child hunger, keep girls in school, and support local farmers. A single meal can nourish, educate, and empower all at once. Another powerful tool for inclusion, resilience, and sustainability are the social safety nets designed to enable smallholder producers to shift towards more nutrition-sensitive and climate-smart production. Thanks to support from the UN system – directed through the Food Systems Window of the Joint SDG Fund, jointly coordinated by the UN Food Systems Coordination Hub and the Fund Secretariat – Somalia is strengthening its delivery of basic social services by linking Early Warning Systems to the Unified Social Registry, and accompanying its cash transfers with livelihood graduation pathways involving microinsurance companies. This effectively transforms producers from beneficiaries into agents of change. However, to be impactful, at scale, and long-lasting, food system interventions must be guided by strong political vision and coordinated through inclusive governance – bringing women, youth, and marginalized groups into decision-making. When communities most affected by policies help shape them, the results are more effective and more enduring. In Somalia, the Council on Food, Climate Change, and Nutrition is taking shape thanks to the Joint SDG Fund Programme and the leadership of the Office of the Resident Coordinator, FAO, and WFP. Hosted under the Office of the Prime Minister and steered jointly by the OPM and the Ministry of Agriculture, the Council will bring together 11 ministries and oversee the implementation of the Somali National Pathway. The case for Doha Why does this matter for the World Social Summit? Because food systems provide a bridge across its three pillars. They are a direct lever for eradicating poverty, creating decent work, and advancing inclusion – in practice, not just in principle. Yet food often remains on the margins of social policy. Ministries of labor and finance overlook it. Social protection debates focus on cash transfers and safety nets, rarely on food systems, markets, or rural cooperatives. The Doha Summit is the moment to change this. Leaders should recognize food systems as core social infrastructure – as important as schools, hospitals, and roads. This means embedding food in national social policies, scaling financing for inclusive programs, and protecting food from the cycle of neglect that follows each crisis. A new way of thinking What if we reimagined the role of food in social policy? Instead of responding to food crises as humanitarian emergencies, we could invest in food systems as the foundation of long-term social development. Progress should be measured not only by GDP or employment rates, but by whether every child eats a healthy meal each day, whether rural youth see farming as a path to prosperity, and whether no mother has to choose between buying medicine or buying bread – feeding her family today or tomorrow. That is the lens the World Social Summit needs. Because poverty, unemployment, and exclusion are experienced daily through empty plates, insecure jobs, and the quiet despair of being shut out of opportunity. The way forward Food systems are already delivering – in farmers’ cooperatives, women- and youth-led businesses, and in national efforts like Somalia’s to link food transformation with social protection and employment. But they remain under-recognized in the social development agenda. Doha offers the chance to correct that. If leaders are serious about eradicating poverty, creating decent work, and advancing inclusion, they should start with food. It is the system that connects households to hope, work to dignity, and communities to resilience. VJ Edgecombe is just 1 reason Cooper Flagg’s Rookie of the Year campaign is already doomed

The 2025 NBA Draft gave us Cooper Flagg as the consensus No. 1 pick headed to the Dallas Mavericks, but just one week into the season, it’s VJ Edgecombe who’s rewriting the Rookie of the Year script. While Flagg battles inconsistency on a struggling Mavericks squad, the No. 3 pick has the Philadelphia 76ers undefeated and himself at the top of the rookie ladder. The former Baylor star is averaging 22.3 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.5 assists while shooting 47.1% from the field and a scorching 42.9% from three-point range through four games. ClutchPoints’ NBA Insider Brett Siegel made the case in his overreaction piece analyzing all 30 NBA teams’ first week, declaring Edgecombe the clear Rookie of the Year favorite over Flagg. Beyond being Philadelphia’s second-best performer behind Tyrese Maxey, Edgecombe has emerged as the runaway candidate for the award. At this rate, it’s tough to see anyone else walking away with the trophy. VJ Edgecombe’s historic debut sets the tone The gap between Edgecombe and Flagg became clear on opening night. Both rookies debuted on October 22, but their performances couldn’t have been more different. Edgecombe exploded for 34 points in Philadelphia’s 117-116 road win at the Boston Celtics, notching the third-most points in NBA debut history. He shot 13-of-26 from the field and logged 42 minutes in the comeback victory. Meanwhile, Flagg managed just 10 points on 4-of-13 shooting in Dallas’s 92-125 home loss to the San Antonio Spurs, though he did grab 10 rebounds. Edgecombe’s debut broke Allen Iverson’s franchise record for most points by a 76ers rookie in their first game. He also set the NBA record for most points in the first quarter of a debut with 14, surpassing LeBron James’s mark from 2003. The performance wasn’t a fluke either. Edgecombe has sustained his production through four games, proving he belongs in the conversation as one of the league’s most impactful rookies regardless of draft position. While Edgecombe’s dominance grabs the headlines, it’s only the beginning of Flagg’s problems. The real issues run much deeper than one rookie outplaying another. The challenges stacking up against Cooper Flagg Jerome Miron-Imagn Images The narrative surrounding Flagg’s slow start overlooks a crucial point. His struggles have less to do with his talent and more to do with the circumstances he’s walked into. From day one, the conditions for success simply haven’t been there. Being the No. 1 overall pick puts pressure on any rookie to perform immediately. Flagg has that pressure multiplied because Dallas traded away Luka Doncic to get Anthony Davis. Many fans see that trade as the front office tanking to get a shot at Flagg in the draft. So now every time Flagg struggles, people question whether giving up Luka was worth it. The team isn’t giving him much room to grow either. Dallas brought in Klay Thompson to play alongside Davis with championship expectations. They’re not in development mode. Making matters worse is the role Dallas has been forced to give him. With Kyrie Irving out following ACL surgery, the Mavericks have been deploying Flagg as a point guard for stretches of games. They’re asking a 6-9 forward who spent his college career playing off the ball to suddenly run an NBA offense and orchestrate plays. That’s not what he did at Duke, and the results show it every time he’s put in a guard position. The contrast with Edgecombe’s situation couldn’t be starker. The 76ers are giving him 40 minutes a game to showcase his strengths without forcing him into uncomfortable situations. He plays his natural wing position alongside Tyrese Maxey, similar to what he did at Baylor. When you’re allowed to play your game, production follows naturally. The situation explains why Flagg is struggling, but the production gap between him and Edgecombe makes the race look even more lopsided. Does the Rookie of the Year race seem already over? Looking at the numbers through five games, it’s hard to argue otherwise. Flagg is averaging 13.4 points, 6.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists while shooting 41.0% from the field and 26.7% from three. Those aren’t bad numbers for a rookie, but they’re not ROY numbers either. His worst performance came on October 27 against the Oklahoma City Thunder when he scored just 2 points on 1-of-9 shooting. While he bounced back with 22 points against the Toronto Raptors, the inconsistency is alarming for a player expected to dominate from day one. The shooting splits tell the real story. Edgecombe is knocking down 42.9% from three-point range on high volume, making him a legitimate threat at all three levels. Flagg’s 26.7% from deep suggests he’s forcing shots and hasn’t yet adjusted to NBA spacing. Beyond the raw stats, Edgecombe plays with a confidence and poise that Flagg hasn’t shown. He looks like a veteran in a rookie’s body, making the right reads and closing games in crunch time. That maturity matters when voters fill out their ballots. Dallas fans can point to the tough situation and growing pains all they want. But the award is about rookies’ on-court performance that season, not potential or circumstances. Right now, Edgecombe is producing at an elite level while Flagg searches for consistency in an environment that isn’t set up for his success. It’s only been the start of the season, and nothing is set in stone yet. But if both rookies continue on their current paths, Edgecombe’s performance is leaning heavily toward him taking home the prize. Flagg has time to turn things around, but for now, Philadelphia’s rookie is controlling the narrative.
