Indian shares advance on trade deal hopes

Indian shares rose on Wednesday, supported by progress in trade talks with Washington and expectations that the U.S. government shutdown may soon end. Market sentiment was also boosted as exit polls for elections in the north Indian state of Bihar predicted a victory for India’s ruling alliance, analysts said. The Nifty 50 rose 0.63% to 25,857.50, while the BSE Sensex added 0.67% to 84,443.74 as of 10:05 a.m. IST, after rising about 0.5% in the previous session. Of the 16 major sectors, 15 advanced. The broader small-caps and mid-caps rose about 0.6% each. Information technology companies, which earn a significant share of their revenue from the U.S, advanced 1.5%, after gaining 2.8% over the previous two sessions. “Optimism over a potential India-U.S. trade agreement has boosted market sentiment, which is further supported by expectations of an end to the U.S. government shutdown and a likely US rate cut in December,” said Gaurav Garg, research analyst at Lemonn Markets Desk. Among individual stocks, auto components maker Belrise Industries climbed 3% after posting an 82% rise in quarterly profit. Stock exchange operator BSE jumped 5.5% after reporting a 61% rise in profit in the September quarter, aided by pick-up in index derivative volumes. Broker Groww’s parent Billionbrains Garage Ventures listed at a premium of 12% in its trading debut after its $754 million IPO was subscribed 17.6 times last week. Engineering firm Thermax slid 4% after logging a 39% drop in quarterly profit as an extended monsoon slowed the execution of backlog orders. Meanwhile, investors awaited India’s consumer inflation data later in the day. According to the median forecast in a Reuters poll of economists, retail inflation is estimated to have plunged to at least a 10-year low in October on sustained drop in food prices.

Jack Schlossberg, JFK’s grandson, launches bid for New York House seat

Nov. 11 (UPI) -- Jack Schlossberg, the grandson of President John F. Kennedy, announced Tuesday that he was running for the House seat being vacated by longtime Rep. Jerry Nadler. Schlossberg, a political commentator and social media personality, made the announcement in an email to supporters saying that he was entering the Democratic primary for the Manhattan-based seat, The New York Times reported. He told The Times in an interview that the Democratic Party needed to retake the House to deal more assertively with President Donald Trump's alleged abuses of power. "There is nothing our party can't do to address costs of living, corruption and the constitutional crisis that we're in," he said. "But without the control of Congress, there's almost nothing that we can do." Schlossberg, 32, has never held elected office and announced his candidacy in a crowded primary for the seat held by Nadler for 34 years. Nadler announced his retirement in September saying it was time to make way for someone younger. The son of diplomat Caroline Kennedy, Schlossberg holds law and master's degrees from Harvard University and served as political correspondent for Vogue magazine in 2024. "I'm a fun, wacky guy," he told the magazine. "I'm a silly goose -- a silly goose who's trying, just trying, to get the truth out there." Schlossberg has a large social media following where he has weighed in on Jesus Christ's body type, oil markets and other topics. He also mocked his cousin Robert Kennedy Jr., who serves as Trump's secretary of Health and Human Services, for his controversial views on vaccines and the causes of autism.

Gold prices slipped on Wednesday, pulled down by a rebound in the dollar and profit-booking after bullion rose to a near three-week high in the previous session on expectations of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve next month. Spot gold was down 0.5% at $4,107.41 per ounce, as of 0421 GMT, after hitting its highest since October 23 on Tuesday. US gold futures for December delivery edged 0.1% lower to $4,113.80 per ounce. “The dip in dollar has suited gold and silver, which have both been posting gains this week,” KCM Trade Chief Market Analyst Tim Waterer said. “It appears that ‘normal service has resumed’ for gold, with the precious metal trading back above $4,100 while eyeing off targets further north should U.S. macro data continue to be supportive for additional monetary policy easing.” The dollar index, meanwhile, edged 0.1% higher against its rivals and was set to a snap a five session losing streak, making gold less attractive for other currency holders. The U.S. Senate passed a deal on Monday to restore federal funding after a record-long shutdown that has disrupted food benefits for millions, left hundreds of thousands of federal workers unpaid, snarled air traffic, and delayed the release of government economic data. Traders are pricing in a roughly 68% probability that the U.S. central bank will cut rates by 25 basis points next month, up from 64% in the previous session, according to CME Group’s FedWatch tool. Non-yielding gold tends to do well in a low-interest-rate environment and during economic uncertainties. Fed Governor Stephen Miran said on Monday a 50-bps rate cut would be appropriate for December, noting that inflation is falling while the unemployment rate is drifting higher. SPDR Gold Trust , the world’s largest gold-backed exchange-traded fund, said its holdings rose 0.41% to 1,046.36 metric tons on Tuesday from 1,042.06 tons on Monday. Elsewhere, spot silver fell 0.4% to $51.05 per ounce, platinum slipped 0.4% to $1,578.95 and palladium dropped nearly 1% to $1,431.47.

In the central Iranian city of Saveh, the centuries-old Moqaddaszadeh Historical House turns into a center of quiet devotion each year during Fatimiyya, the days of mourning for Lady Fatimah, daughter of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). In this period of reflection and remembrance, local families gather to prepare samanu (a traditional Persian pudding made from sprouted wheat), keeping alive a practice known as Samanu-Pazan. Women and men, young and old, take part in the cooking process that begins before dawn and continues throughout the day. Large copper pots filled with wheat, flour, and water simmer slowly, producing a thick, naturally sweet dish that is shared freely among participants and visitors. The ritual is accompanied by prayer, reflection, and a shared sense of purpose rooted in cultural and religious continuity. For many of the women who lead the ceremony, Samanu-Pazan is as much about connection as it is about cooking. The revival of this old tradition has been supported in recent years by the Saveh Municipality and the city’s cultural council, ensuring that it continues to thrive as part of the region’s living heritage. Families contribute in various ways, some provide wheat or sugar, others sponsor a pot of tea or donate their time to serve visitors. Acts of generosity are a defining feature of the event, with residents often stepping in spontaneously to help or serve the food. Acts of generosity are common; a passerby might sponsor a pot of soup or distribute warm samanu to the crowd. But the story of Samanu reaches far beyond this courtyard. The dish first entered Iran during the early Islamic era and gradually evolved into its present form. Beyond its cultural and spiritual role, samanu holds a special place in traditional Persian medicine for its nutritional properties. Its deep connection with spring, symbolizing fertility, renewal, and the rebirth of nature, has also made it an essential part of the Haft-Seen, the Persian New Year table that celebrates life’s renewal. In 2016, Iran’s Ministry of Cultural Heritage officially registered Samanu-Pazan and its related rituals as an element of the country’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. The main pot this year contained 170 kilograms of wheat, 500 kilograms of flour, and nearly 2,000 liters of water, producing thousands of servings of samanu. But beyond the scale of the cooking, what stands out is the collective effort and cooperation that bring the community together. As the ceremony concludes and the final portions are distributed, the courtyard of the Moqaddaszadeh House carries the scent of wheat and the sound of quiet conversations. The tradition, simple yet deeply rooted, continues to link generations through faith, memory, and shared heritage. Across Iran, Lady Fatimah holds a deeply revered place in the hearts of many. She is seen as a symbol of purity, compassion, and resilience, qualities that continue to inspire generations of Iranians. LOS ANGELES — Next February's 75th NBA All-Star Game will feature a three-team round robin tournament with two teams of United States players and a World squad of global talent, the league announced on Tuesday.The tournament, consisting of four 12-minute contests, will be hosted on February 15 by the Los Angeles Clippers at Intuit Dome, which opened last year in Inglewood, California.Two teams would play in the first game, with the third team facing the winner of the opener, then the loser of the opener.The championship game will match the top two teams based on records or point differential.Each team will have a minimum of eight players, so the All-Star selection process to determine 24 players — 12 from each conference — will change only so that all players will be chosen regardless of position.'I actually love it,' retired NBA star Carmelo Anthony said. 'The players are used to positionless basketball. You can see five guards on the court. I love the idea of the best players getting chosen in the All-Star Game.'It brings excitement. SUAO: Taiwan evacuated more than 8,300 people ahead of Wednesday’s arrival of a much weakened Typhoon Fung-wong that brought record downpours to the mountainous east coast and unleashed floods that rose neck-high in places. Businesses and schools were shut in most southern areas of the island, with 51 people injured. Television images showed severe floods in parts of the largely rural eastern county of Yilan, with waters neck-deep as soldiers mounted rescue efforts for those stranded. More than 1,000 homes were flooded in the harbour town of Suao which received 648 mm (25 inches) of rain on Tuesday, a record for the month, weather officials said. “The water came in so quickly,” said fisherman Hung Chun-yi, who spent the night clearing mud from his home, after its first floor was engulfed in waters 60-cm (2-ft) deep. “It rained so much, and so fast, the drainage couldn’t take it.” Other residents also worked to clear mud from flooded homes in Suao, though the torrential rains have stopped. The fire department said about 8,300 people were moved from their homes to safer areas, mostly in Yilan and nearby Hualien, where a monsoon from the north swelled the rainfall with the unseasonably late typhoon. “Summer is getting longer and typhoons are arriving later and later,” said Huang En-hong, a forecaster at Taiwan’s Central Weather Administration. Climate change could cause similar more extreme weather events, but more study was needed to establish a trend, he added. Fung-wong is forecast to graze the far southern tip of Taiwan later on Wednesday before heading into the Pacific Ocean. It lost considerable strength, after swirling through the Philippines to kill 27 people. A typhoon in September caused floods that killed 18 people in Hualien. This week’s typhoon will not directly affect the northern city of Hsinchu, home to TSMC, the world’s largest contract chipmaker.

Donald Trump said he has 'an obligation' to sue the BBC, confirming he will do so for $1billion (£760million) over Panorama's use of a doctored speech. The president was asked about the potential lawsuit by Fox News' Laura Ingraham in an interview that ran Tuesday and was filmed just hours after director-general Tim Davie quit the BBC on Sunday. 'I guess I have to, why not? They defrauded the public and they've admitted it, this is within one of our, supposedly, great allies. That's a pretty sad event.' Trump claimed that the public broadcaster changed his 'beautiful, calming' speech on January 6 to 'something radical.' 'What they did was rather incredible, they showed me the results of what they did, how they butchered it up. But it was very dishonest and the head man quit,' he added, referring to Davie. Ingraham then showed the doctored speech to her audience, before asking Trump again to confirm he would sue the BBC. 'I think I have an obligation to do it, because you can't allow people to do it,' Trump said, citing his success in suing CBS News' 60 Minutes, leading to complete changes at the top of the Tiffany Network. Trump said in July that Paramount/CBS/60 Minutes paid $16 million in the settlement and anticipated an additional $20 million from the new owners of CBS in advertising, PSAs or similar programming. Trump previously set a deadline of 5pm EST (10pm in the UK) this Friday to 'comply' with his demands. A letter sent to BBC Chairman Samir Shah at Television Centre by his legal team in Florida said: 'President Trump will be left with no alternative but to enforce his legal and equitable rights, all of which are expressly reserved and are not waived, including by filing legal action for no less than $1,000,000,000 (One Billion Dollars) in damages. 'Due to their salacious nature, the fabricated statements that were aired by the BBC have been widely disseminated throughout various digital mediums, which have reached tens of millions of people worldwide. Consequently, the BBC has caused President Trump to suffer overwhelming financial and reputational harm.' The letter from his lawyer, Alejandro Brito, added: 'The BBC is on notice.' Mr Brito says Mr Trump has three demands. By close of business on Friday the BBC must issue a full and fair retraction, provide an apology and 'appropriately compensate President Trump for the harm caused'. Mr Trump fired off a legal letter after it emerged Panorama had selectively edited his speech before the January 6 Capitol riot to remove a section where he told supporters to demonstrate peacefully. The scandal has brought down the Director General Tim Davie and the CEO of BBC News, Deborah Turness. A BBC spokesman said: 'We will review the letter and respond directly in due course.' It came as the corporation's chairman Samir Shah made a humbling apology to Mr Trump and admitted he was willing to say sorry in person. 'He's a litigious fellow. So we should be prepared for all outcomes', he said when asked if he knew whether the President would sue. Mr Trump said last night that the BBC is a 'corrupt' organisation and called Tim Davie and Deborah Turness, who have resigned over the scandal, 'very dishonest people'. A spokesman for Mr Trump's legal team told NBC: 'The BBC defamed President Trump by intentionally and deceitfully editing its documentary in order to try and interfere in the Presidential Election. President Trump will continue to hold accountable those who traffic in lies, deception, and fake news.' The revelation comes shortly after Mr Shah used his first remarks since the resignations of director-general Tim Davie and head of news Deborah Turness to mount a defence of the corporation. Mr Shah accused Michael Prescott, who wrote a critical memo that ultimately prompted the resignations, of offering a 'personal account' which gives only a 'partial' view of events. In a 1,600-word letter to the culture, media and sport committee (CMS), Mr Shah admitted there were 'occasions when the BBC gets things wrong' but claimed the leaked report did not present the full picture. 'Michael Prescott's memo gives only a partial description of the evidence that editorial guidelines and standards committee received and considered,' he said. He insisted there were no issues the BBC had sought to 'bury', adding: 'That interpretation is simply not true. The issues raised by Mr Prescott are precisely the issues that have been considered by the Editorial Guidelines and Standards Committee [EGSC] and the board.' Mr Shah said Mr Prescott had relied on evidence compiled by the editorial guidelines and standards committee (EGSC) to produce the dossier. 'There is another view that has gained currency in the coverage that the BBC has done nothing to tackle these problems. That is also simply not true,' he said. 'Over the three years Mr Prescott was an adviser to the EGSC, the BBC has: published corrections where we have got things wrong; changed editorial guidance to make the BBC's position on issues clearer; made changes to leadership where the problems point to underlying issues; and carried out formal disciplinary measures.' In a furious social media post last night, Mr Trump condemned the BBC as 'corrupt' and described its staff as 'very dishonest'. Today, Mr Shah said the corporation has received communication from the president, adding: 'We are now considering how to reply to him.' But he failed to apologise personally to Mr Trump. It comes amid an ongoing civil war at the BBC, with insiders saying that some senior BBC News staff are in conflict with the board. Nick Robinson used the Today Programme to deliver a monologue in which he described the governors as being in a state of 'paralysis'. Sir Keir Starmer also backed the BBC. In an interview with the BBC, he added: 'I did not want to lose Tim Davie nor did any member of the board. We were upset by the decision. My job now is to ensure a smooth transition'. Hours earlier, Nick Robinson launched into his extraordinary monologue on the Today programme, which appeared to downplay the impartiality scandal. But one household name at the BBC told the Daily Mail today that they are amazed that Mr Davie and Ms Turness were not fired long ago, given the number of scandals on their watch. 'They have both been asleep at the wheel', the Daily Mail's source, a well-known TV star who asked to remain anonymous, has said. 'Davie and Turness have failed to get a grip', they added. They pointed to the 'woke' direction the BBC has taken in recent years, including claims it has been 'captured by a minority ideology', especially on its 'one-sided' reporting of transgender issues and Gaza. The Daily Mail's source said of Ms Turness's failure to quit until yesterday: 'She was the head of news!' The insider has said that Mr Davie and Ms Turness had consistently 'failed' to deal with the issue of impartiality at the BBC, most notably the Gaza documentary featuring the son of a Hamas official. There was also the Huw Edwards scandal, impartial tweets from Match of the Day presenter Gary Lineker, the broadcast of Bob Vylan's performance at Glastonbury where he chanted 'death to the IDF' and now Panorama's botched editing of a Trump speech. Only last week, there were claims that the corporation had been 'captured by trans ideologists' and bosses were castigated for the 'absolutely mad' treatment of presenter Martine Croxall, who was rebuked when she corrected 'pregnant people' to 'women' in a script live on air. Former Radio 4 boss Mark Damazer has insisted that Davie was an 'outstanding Director General' and believes it is 'absolutely wrong' to say the BBC is 'systemically biased'. But Mr Trump is said to be 'absolutely enraged' by the Panorama scandal and told his friend Nigel Farage: 'I thought this was a state broadcaster.' Mr Farage said of the President: 'To say that he was angry would be an understatement', adding: 'What the BBC did was election interference.' Mr Farage added: 'It's just the latest of a long list of political biases that we see running throughout the BBC. 'I've watched it for decades, whether it was their coverage of the European Union, their coverage of immigration, their coverage of climate change, their swallowing hook, line and sinker of Hamas propaganda coming out of Gaza, and the woke agenda runs through not just news, but every cultural programme as well. 'And so you have to conclude that the BBC has been not just run, but staffed by the wrong people for way, way too long.' Mr Trump last night condemned the BBC as 'corrupt' as he tore into Mr Davie after he resigned in disgrace over a doctored video. When asked about President Trump's comments, an emotional Ms Turness said: 'Of course our journalists aren't corrupt. Our journalists are hardworking people who strive for impartiality and I will stand by their journalism.' Explaining why she had quit, she went on: 'I would like to say it has been the privilege of my career to serve as the CEO of BBC News and to work with our brilliant team of journalists. 'I stepped down over the weekend because the buck stops with me. But I'd like to make one thing very clear, BBC News is not institutionally biased. That's why it's the world's most trusted news provider.' Hours earlier, Mr Robinson said Tim Davie and BBC News CEO Ms Turness had still not explained 'what they had actually got wrong' when they resigned yesterday over the editing of the Trump speech. Mr Robinson said that there were 'no complaints about the editing of Donald Trump's speech' when it was broadcast in 2024. He also said that some listeners were tired of hearing 'the BBC talking about itself', adding that there is 'plenty of other news' in the world. Mr Robinson had launched into his monologue just after the 6.30am news bulletin today, where he said the BBC's board was in a state of 'paralysis'. And in what some listeners suggested was him playing down the impartiality row he said: 'I understand that at the time of the transmission of the Panorama film in 2024, there were no complaints about the editing of Donald Trump's speech.' He added: 'In her resignation statement Deborah Turness said the ongoing controversy has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC. Neither she nor Tim Davie explained what they had actually got wrong.' After a 15 minute section on the scandal, where he discussed what will happen next with two BBC reporters, Mr Robinson finished by saying: 'As we know patience can wear thin about the BBC talking about itself, there is plenty other news. We will be talking about the NHS, about homelessness and let's talk about other news from Belgium, important news.' Mr Trump had also shared a Daily Mail column from Boris Johnson, where the former prime minister vowed to withhold his licence fee unless Mr Davie broke his silence on the incident or resigned, which he later did. The Mail on Sunday further revealed how two of the BBC's leading presenters claimed that airing concerns about its coverage was part of a political campaign to 'destroy' the corporation. Mr Robinson's remarks – endorsed by veteran reporter John Simpson – were swiftly condemned as 'ridiculous' and 'arrogant' by Mr Johnson. And today Mr Robinson spoke out again, this time on the BBC's flagship radio news programme in a monologue lasting several minutes. He said: 'Ever since rumours of the resignation surfaced, I have been piecing together what happened that led to this crisis. 'Those at the top of the BBC have appeared paralysed last week, unable to agree what to say - not just about the editing of that speech, but wider claims of institutional bias. 'One source described the arguments ever since the Telegraph leaked a memo by a former adviser to the BBC Board as 'like armed combat', another alleged 'political interference' after what they described as a 'hostile takeover' of parts of the BBC.' The presenter said a statement, which was being prepared by BBC News executives, last week was set to apologise for the mistake. He said they had agreed a statement saying it had 'been a mistake to edit together two different sections of President Trump's speech on the day of the Capitol Hill riots, without clearly signalling to the audience that edit had been made'. It would have said 'despite this error, there was no intention to mislead the audience' Mr Robinson added. The row began over an edition of the flagship current affairs programme Panorama in which two clips of Trump's speech were spliced together, despite having been said an hour apart. In a section of Trump: A Second Chance? which focused on the Capitol Hill riots on January 6, the president was shown telling his supporters that he was going to walk to the Capitol with them to 'fight like hell' when in fact what he said was that he would walk with them 'to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard'. Concerns about the documentary were raised by Michael Prescott, a former external adviser to the BBC's editorial standards committee. Last night President Trump branded the broadcaster a 'terrible thing for democracy' and said its 'corrupt journalists' had been exposed. In a 19-page document, Mr Prescott accused the corporation of doctoring a speech by Mr Trump and censoring the debate on transgender issues, and said its Gaza coverage had been biased. Mr Robinson added: 'The argument which raged on the BBC board ensured neither defended itself nor admitted its mistakes for day after long day after the leaking of the Prescott dossier alleging institutional bias. 'As criticism mounted from the White House, from former prime minister Boris Johnson and many others, the BBC merely said that it would not comment on leaked documents, whilst promising the chairman Samir Shah would respond in writing to MPs on the culture, media and sport select committee.' Mr Robinson then singled out board member Sir Robbie Gibb over his views that the BBC did have a problem of institutional bias. He added: 'A majority of the BBC board appear to agree with their editorial adviser, that there is a problem of institutional bias reflected in that coverage, not just of Donald Trump but of Gaza and Israel and also trans rights. 'That argument has been led in particular by one board member, Sir Robbie Gibb - a former BBC executive in charge of political programmes, who became Prime Minister Theresa May's Downing Street Director of Communications, is one of those involved in the founding of GB News and a supporter of the Conservative Party. 'Friends of Sir Robbie insist he has repeatedly and consistently supported Tim Davie as director general and wanted him to stay.' In a final thought to listeners, Mr Robinson said 'at the time of the transmission of the Panorama film back in 2024, there were no complaints about the editing of Donald Trump's speech'. Mr Davie's resignation brings an end to a 20-year career at the BBC which saw him rise from director of marketing, communications and audiences. In a post on Truth Social on Sunday night, Trump wrote: 'The TOP people in the BBC, including TIM DAVIE, the BOSS, are all quitting/FIRED, because they were caught 'doctoring' my very good (PERFECT!) speech of January 6th. 'These are very dishonest people who tried to step on the scales of a Presidential Election. On top of everything else, they are from a Foreign Country, one that many consider our Number One Ally. What a terrible thing for Democracy!' Mr Davie said he wanted to hand over to a new director-general ahead of Royal Charter renewal negotiations with the Government, which will decide the broadcaster's future funding model. In a note to staff on Sunday, he said: 'Like all public organisations, the BBC is not perfect, and we must always be open, transparent and accountable. While not being the only reason, the current debate around BBC News has understandably contributed to my decision. 'Overall the BBC is delivering well, but there have been some mistakes made and as director-general I have to take ultimate responsibility.' BBC chairman Mr Shah said: 'This is a sad day for the BBC. Tim has been an outstanding director-general for the last five years. He has had the full support of me and the board throughout. However, I understand the continued pressure on him, personally and professionally, which has led him to take this decision. The whole board respects the decision and the reasons for it.' Ms Turness, who was poached from ITN by Mr Davie three years ago, told staff: 'The ongoing controversy around the Panorama on President Trump has reached a stage where it is causing damage to the BBC – an institution that I love. In public life, leaders need to be fully accountable, and that is why I am stepping down. 'While mistakes have been made, I want to be absolutely clear recent allegations that BBC News is institutionally biased are wrong.' Leading politicians have said the BBC must change to rebuild its reputation. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey said the corporation needs 'to turn a new leaf' while Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch called for 'top-to-bottom' reform. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage said it was the BBC's 'last chance', adding: 'I don't want to abolish the BBC, I make that very clear, but we cannot have the BBC being seen to be our main national news broadcaster if it cannot perform in a straightforward, simple, unbiased way.' Government minister Louise Sandher-Jones rejected suggestions the BBC was institutionally biased. The veterans minister told Sky News: 'When you look at the huge range of domestic issues, local issues, international issues, that it has to cover, I think its output is very trusted. 'When I speak to people who've got very strongly held views on those, they're still using the BBC for a lot of their information, it's forming their views on this. 'I think we can all point to elements of BBC broadcasting of news and say 'well, that reflects my views, and that doesn't' and that's absolutely right, that we should be able to say that.' Asked about Trump's comments on the BBC, she said: 'President Trump will obviously speak for himself. Vietnam eyes tariff deal soon, as US seeks to cut huge trade deficit

HANOI: Vietnam is working to sign a trade agreement with the United States soon, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son said on Wednesday, as a new round of negotiations gets underway in Washington. In October, the two countries agreed to finalise a trade deal within weeks that would maintain U.S. tariffs of 20% on its imports of Vietnamese goods, but exempt some unspecified products from the new duty imposed by US President Donald Trump in August. ASTANA — This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Yevgeny Brusilovsky, the composer behind Kazakhstan’s first operas and orchestral works. His legacy includes nine operas, four ballets, nine symphonies, and around 500 songs and romances. Brusilovsky also co-authored the music of the national anthem of Kazakhstan, used from 1945 to 1992 and again from 1992 to 2006 (together with Mukan Tolebayev and Latif Khamidi). His name stands alongside the greats of Kazakh classical music, such as Yerkegali Rakhmadiyev, Bakhytzhan Baykadamov, and Sydyk Mukhamedzhanov. Brusilovsky was born on Nov. 12, 1905, in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. Between 1922 and 1924, he studied piano and composition at the Moscow Conservatory, then entered the Leningrad Conservatory to study under Maximilian Steinberg, graduating in 1931. Two years later, the Leningrad Union of Composers sent Brusilovsky to Almaty, where he became the musical director of the Kazakh Musical Theater and composed the first Kazakh opera, “Kyz-Zhibek.” From 1949 to 1951, he served as the artistic director of the philharmonic, while also teaching at the Almaty Conservatory starting in 1944. By 1955, he was a professor and head of the composition department there. From 1939 to 1948, he chaired the Organizing Committee of the Union of Composers of the Kazakh SSR, and from 1948 to 1953, he led its board. His operas include “Kyz Zhibek” (1934), “Zhalbyr” (1935), “Er Torgyn” (1936), “Aiman-Sholpan” (1938), “Golden Grain” (1940), “Guard, Forward!” (1942), “Amangeldy” (1945, co-authored with Tolebayev), “Dudarai” (1953), and “The Heirs” (1962). He also composed the music for the ballet “Kozy Korpesh and Bayan Sulu” (1967), among many others. “Kyz Zhibek” According to experts in classical music, the first Kazakh opera draws deeply on national folklore. Its score incorporates melodies of akyns (improvising poets), traditional ritual and labor dances, and folk games. Initially, the opera combined the lyrical poetry of doomed love, crushed by tribal customs, with admiration for the ritualistic beauty of Kazakh life. Later, Brusilovsky and the theater produced a revised edition. The opera, composed in four acts (five scenes), features a libretto by Gabit Musrepov based on the Kazakh folk epic “Kyz-Zhibek” (The Silk Girl), a story of loyal love and tragic fate. It tells of Zhibek and Tulegen, whose love is destroyed by the forces of hatred born of feudal tradition. The premiere took place in Almaty on Nov. 7, 1934, as a “musical drama” directed by Kuzmich. In 1936, the opera was performed in Moscow during the Decade of Kazakh Art, marking a milestone in the history of national music. The galloping Boz-Aygyr Brusilovsky also created the first examples of Kazakh chamber music – brilliant piano and violin cycles. His suite “Boz-Aygyr” (The Gray Horse) became a gem of any violinist’s concert repertoire and a landmark in the history of Kazakh chamber-instrumental music. He composed “Boz-Aygyr” between 1953 and 1954, during the period between his major opera, “Dudarai,” and his work on the film score for “Daughter of the Steppes.” The suite is based on a kui, an instrumental folk tune, by folk composer Rakhmet Amanbayev, first recorded by Alexander Zataevich. In a 2015 interview with Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, Naum Shafer, the creator of Kazakhstan’s only museum of vinyl records, a renowned musicologist and record collector who passed away in 2022, shared that Brusilovsky sought to transform this melody in various forms without losing its folk origins’ magic, while revealing its full color and inner energy. At the same time, Brusilovsky aimed to enrich Kazakh professional chamber music and contribute to the development of a national violin school. Preserving the folk heritage Opera and symphonies were not Brusilovsky’s only legacy. Collecting and recording Kazakh folk songs and küys was his lifelong passion; he preserved more than 250 of them. Shafer recalled Brusilovsky saying he felt lucky to have met Kazakh folk musicians such as Makhambet and Nausha Bukeykhanov, Kali Zhantleuov, Dina Nurpeisova, and many other dombra players who faithfully kept the folk traditions alive in remote villages. “I was fortunate to still hear the kobyz, the instrument of steppe shamans [baksys]. The horsehair strings gave it a muffled, mystical sound. The baksys knew its mysterious power,” Brusilovsky once said. According to Shafer, Brusilovsky revealed the spiritual depth of Kazakh folk music, elevating it to the level of world musical masterpieces. His third symphony, “Sary-Arka,” paved the way for Kazakh symphonism, a genre that did not exist in the country before him. He also arranged countless Kazakh folk songs for voice and piano, turning them into concert pieces worthy of professional performance. Brusilovsky gave many musicians opportunities who would later make their own mark. By founding the composition department at the Almaty Conservatory, he trained an entire generation, all major Kazakh composers were either his students or the students of his students. It was he who “discovered” the then-unknown Mukan Tolebayev and helped him write the opera “Birzhan and Sara,” shaping its melodic material and orchestrating it. One of his most significant contributions was the rehabilitation of the 19th-century legendary Kurmangazy, once dismissed as a “rebellious outlaw” of the Kazakh steppe. The later national recognition of Kurmangazy’s music and the naming of the Almaty Conservatory in his honor are among Brusilovsky’s greatest achievements. He also mentored a generation of Kazakh vocalists, including the legendary Kulyash Baiseitova. A legacy beyond measure Shafer reflected in an interview with Kazakhstanskaya Pravda that he was “privileged” to know Brusilovsky. “For about a year and a half, I would bring him my modest compositions, and he would spend hours with me, selflessly and patiently. Once, I asked him a rather naïve question: ‘Why did you stop writing Russian music?’” he said. “He looked at me sternly and, stammering as he always did when emotional, replied: ‘I have woven my personal destiny into the destiny of Kazakh culture.’” Brusilovsky was utterly devoid of arrogance, a trait often found among professional musicians who look down on talented amateurs. While he constantly urged his students to perfect their technique, he believed that the essence of composition lies in talent, cultural depth, and character. He once wrote in his “Five Notebooks,” published in 1997 in the Prostor magazine, “Does musical education alone make one a professional composer? Can’t a conservatory graduate still be an amateur? And conversely, can’t a folk musician who has devoted his life to music, mastered the dombra, and created brilliant works of true artistry, can’t he be a professional in his own right?” This statement captures the essence of Brusilovsky, an artist who rejected soulless professionalism and believed that true music must come from the heart.
