Vietnam eyes tariff deal soon, as US seeks to cut huge trade deficit

HANOI: Vietnam is working to sign a trade agreement with the United States soon, Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son said on Wednesday, as a new round of negotiations gets underway in Washington. In October, the two countries agreed to finalise a trade deal within weeks that would maintain U.S. tariffs of 20% on its imports of Vietnamese goods, but exempt some unspecified products from the new duty imposed by US President Donald Trump in August. Son urged U.S. businesses at a conference in Hanoi to help in bilateral negotiations so that the two parties could “soon sign a fair and balanced trade agreement.” Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, Michael DeSombre, told the conference in a recorded statement that the trade deal should rebalance commercial flows between the two countries, reducing the U.S. deficit with Hanoi, which is the largest after China and Mexico. For the first 10 months of the year, Vietnam has recorded a $111 billion trade surplus with the U.S. - pointing to another potential annual record - according to Vietnamese data, which is usually more conservative than U.S. trade figures, currently unavailable because of an ongoing federal government shutdown. Talks on exemption list A Vietnamese delegation led by Trade Minister Nguyen Hong Dien is in Washington this week for a new round of talks with U.S. officials to work on finalising the trade agreement, the Vietnamese trade ministry said on its web portal. A person briefed about the talks said negotiations would focus on identifying Vietnamese items that could be exempted from U.S. tariffs, such as coffee, and on the scope of the preferential access to the Vietnamese market that Hanoi has pledged for U.S. products, such as cars and farm goods. The Vietnamese side aimed to finalise the deal ideally after the U.S. Supreme Court decides on the legality of U.S. tariffs imposed by Trump, and possibly by December, the person said, declining to be named because the information was not public. The court ruling is expected anytime before the end of this year and mid-2026. Vietnamese negotiators are keen to mark the signing of a trade deal with a meeting between Trump and Vietnam’s top leader To Lam, multiple officials have said. Son urged U.S. businesses at Wednesday’s conference to support Vietnam’s efforts to set up the high-level meeting. Past attempts have not been successful, according to multiple officials. He also called on U.S. businesses to encourage Washington to recognise Vietnam as a market economy and lift its restrictions on the export of high-tech products, such as advanced semiconductors. DeSombre said Vietnam could play a role in global supply chains for critical minerals. Vietnam has large resources of rare earths and gallium but has been slow in exploiting them.

'Mellon Blue' diamond sells for $25.6 million at Swiss auction

GENEVA — A blue diamond weighing nearly 10 carats has sold at auction in Switzerland for 20.5 million Swiss francs ($25.6 million) including fees. The pear-shaped 9.51-carat “Mellon Blue” — named for the late American arts patron Rachel “Bunny” Mellon — had been expected to fetch $20-$30 million at the Christie's auction on Tuesday. The house said the stone came in on the estimated range. The final price includes the “buyer's premium” and other fees.“Not the dazzling moment I expected,' said Tobias Kormind, managing director of online jeweler 77 Diamonds. He said the gem was “tipped as the season’s headline act” but was weighed down by a broader market mood.“Geopolitical tensions — from the war in Ukraine to Trump’s tariffs — and a weakened Chinese economy that kept many usual buyers away, left the room distinctly cautious,' he said in a statement.Auctioneer Rahul Kadakia, chairman of the global luxury group at Christie’s, hailed a “notable moment” for his team, “evidencing the elite appetite among collectors for extraordinary and storied gems.”It was a far cry from the peak sale for a blue diamond: Christie’s says its highest price for a vivid blue diamond was set in Geneva in 2016 when the 14.62-carat Oppenheimer Blue sold for more than $57 million. The Mellon Blue was previously sold in 2014, the year that Mellon died, for $32.6 million, which was one of the highest prices ever paid for a colored diamond at auction, Christie's says. For decades, the stone was part of Mellon's private collection.Max Fawcett, Christie’s global head of jewelry, said the Mellon Blue was unlike the vast majority of other modern gems that have had facets added and been modified to enhance the color.“When you have great shape and great color, you’re looking at the gem of gems,” he said Friday, noting the stone's grade of Fancy Vivid Blue and Internally Flawless by the Gemological Institute of America. “That's what this is.”The auction was the first installment of two days of jewelry auctions in Geneva. On Wednesday, rival Sotheby's is putting up the “Glowing Rose” pink diamond that's expected to draw bids of around $20 million.

Yevgeny Brusilovsky: Composer Who Gave Kazakhstan First Opera

ASTANA — This year marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Yevgeny Brusilovsky, the composer behind Kazakhstan’s first operas and orchestral works. His legacy includes nine operas, four ballets, nine symphonies, and around 500 songs and romances. Brusilovsky also co-authored the music of the national anthem of Kazakhstan, used from 1945 to 1992 and again from 1992 to 2006 (together with Mukan Tolebayev and Latif Khamidi). His name stands alongside the greats of Kazakh classical music, such as Yerkegali Rakhmadiyev, Bakhytzhan Baykadamov, and Sydyk Mukhamedzhanov. Brusilovsky was born on Nov. 12, 1905, in Rostov-on-Don, Russia. Between 1922 and 1924, he studied piano and composition at the Moscow Conservatory, then entered the Leningrad Conservatory to study under Maximilian Steinberg, graduating in 1931. Two years later, the Leningrad Union of Composers sent Brusilovsky to Almaty, where he became the musical director of the Kazakh Musical Theater and composed the first Kazakh opera, “Kyz-Zhibek.” From 1949 to 1951, he served as the artistic director of the philharmonic, while also teaching at the Almaty Conservatory starting in 1944. By 1955, he was a professor and head of the composition department there. From 1939 to 1948, he chaired the Organizing Committee of the Union of Composers of the Kazakh SSR, and from 1948 to 1953, he led its board. His operas include “Kyz Zhibek” (1934), “Zhalbyr” (1935), “Er Torgyn” (1936), “Aiman-Sholpan” (1938), “Golden Grain” (1940), “Guard, Forward!” (1942), “Amangeldy” (1945, co-authored with Tolebayev), “Dudarai” (1953), and “The Heirs” (1962). He also composed the music for the ballet “Kozy Korpesh and Bayan Sulu” (1967), among many others. “Kyz Zhibek” According to experts in classical music, the first Kazakh opera draws deeply on national folklore. Its score incorporates melodies of akyns (improvising poets), traditional ritual and labor dances, and folk games. Initially, the opera combined the lyrical poetry of doomed love, crushed by tribal customs, with admiration for the ritualistic beauty of Kazakh life. Later, Brusilovsky and the theater produced a revised edition. The opera, composed in four acts (five scenes), features a libretto by Gabit Musrepov based on the Kazakh folk epic “Kyz-Zhibek” (The Silk Girl), a story of loyal love and tragic fate. It tells of Zhibek and Tulegen, whose love is destroyed by the forces of hatred born of feudal tradition. The premiere took place in Almaty on Nov. 7, 1934, as a “musical drama” directed by Kuzmich. In 1936, the opera was performed in Moscow during the Decade of Kazakh Art, marking a milestone in the history of national music. The galloping Boz-Aygyr Brusilovsky also created the first examples of Kazakh chamber music – brilliant piano and violin cycles. His suite “Boz-Aygyr” (The Gray Horse) became a gem of any violinist’s concert repertoire and a landmark in the history of Kazakh chamber-instrumental music. He composed “Boz-Aygyr” between 1953 and 1954, during the period between his major opera, “Dudarai,” and his work on the film score for “Daughter of the Steppes.” The suite is based on a kui, an instrumental folk tune, by folk composer Rakhmet Amanbayev, first recorded by Alexander Zataevich. In a 2015 interview with Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, Naum Shafer, the creator of Kazakhstan’s only museum of vinyl records, a renowned musicologist and record collector who passed away in 2022, shared that Brusilovsky sought to transform this melody in various forms without losing its folk origins’ magic, while revealing its full color and inner energy. At the same time, Brusilovsky aimed to enrich Kazakh professional chamber music and contribute to the development of a national violin school. Preserving the folk heritage Opera and symphonies were not Brusilovsky’s only legacy. Collecting and recording Kazakh folk songs and küys was his lifelong passion; he preserved more than 250 of them. Shafer recalled Brusilovsky saying he felt lucky to have met Kazakh folk musicians such as Makhambet and Nausha Bukeykhanov, Kali Zhantleuov, Dina Nurpeisova, and many other dombra players who faithfully kept the folk traditions alive in remote villages. “I was fortunate to still hear the kobyz, the instrument of steppe shamans [baksys]. The horsehair strings gave it a muffled, mystical sound. The baksys knew its mysterious power,” Brusilovsky once said. According to Shafer, Brusilovsky revealed the spiritual depth of Kazakh folk music, elevating it to the level of world musical masterpieces. His third symphony, “Sary-Arka,” paved the way for Kazakh symphonism, a genre that did not exist in the country before him. He also arranged countless Kazakh folk songs for voice and piano, turning them into concert pieces worthy of professional performance. Brusilovsky gave many musicians opportunities who would later make their own mark. By founding the composition department at the Almaty Conservatory, he trained an entire generation, all major Kazakh composers were either his students or the students of his students. It was he who “discovered” the then-unknown Mukan Tolebayev and helped him write the opera “Birzhan and Sara,” shaping its melodic material and orchestrating it. One of his most significant contributions was the rehabilitation of the 19th-century legendary Kurmangazy, once dismissed as a “rebellious outlaw” of the Kazakh steppe. The later national recognition of Kurmangazy’s music and the naming of the Almaty Conservatory in his honor are among Brusilovsky’s greatest achievements. He also mentored a generation of Kazakh vocalists, including the legendary Kulyash Baiseitova. A legacy beyond measure Shafer reflected in an interview with Kazakhstanskaya Pravda that he was “privileged” to know Brusilovsky. “For about a year and a half, I would bring him my modest compositions, and he would spend hours with me, selflessly and patiently. Once, I asked him a rather naïve question: ‘Why did you stop writing Russian music?’” he said. “He looked at me sternly and, stammering as he always did when emotional, replied: ‘I have woven my personal destiny into the destiny of Kazakh culture.’” Brusilovsky was utterly devoid of arrogance, a trait often found among professional musicians who look down on talented amateurs. While he constantly urged his students to perfect their technique, he believed that the essence of composition lies in talent, cultural depth, and character. He once wrote in his “Five Notebooks,” published in 1997 in the Prostor magazine, “Does musical education alone make one a professional composer? Can’t a conservatory graduate still be an amateur? And conversely, can’t a folk musician who has devoted his life to music, mastered the dombra, and created brilliant works of true artistry, can’t he be a professional in his own right?” This statement captures the essence of Brusilovsky, an artist who rejected soulless professionalism and believed that true music must come from the heart.

Mavericks Executives Were Irked By Luka Doncic Not Taking Finals Loss As Seriously As LeBron James And Kobe Bryant, Says Reporter

Nico Harrison is once again the most talked-about man in Dallas, but unlike in February, when it was for tragic reasons, this time, D-Town is euphoric. He’s on his way out, much to Mavs fans’ elation. Trading Luka Doncic away is still believed to be one of the most catastrophic decisions in NBA history and the Mavs are paying for it. But, reporter Jorge Sedano recently revealed information that showed how it wasn’t just Harrison questioning Doncic. It’s easy to forget, but the Mavericks made it to the NBA Finals just over a year ago with Doncic as their cornerstone. Life was beautiful, and the fans were expecting to build on that as they chased their first NBA championship since 2011. But behind the scenes, Sedano revealed that the organization was not happy with Doncic. It wasn’t about his playing style or his numbers in-game. It was more about his mindset. The NBA insider revealed how he spoke to an executive who insisted that Doncic was not taking the loss to the Celtics all that seriously. “This person said to me, ‘You know, I was around Kobe when he lost to the Celtics, and I remember that when they were playing the song when the Celtics won the championship… Kobe would literally use that song in his workouts every day'”, Sedano stated. This fueled Bryant and made him thirsty for revenge, and sure enough, the next two years (2009 and 2010), he led the Lakers to victory. Doncic? Wasn’t showing the same level of interest as Bryant did. And it caused concern behind the scenes. “This person also said to me,” Sedano continued. “‘I was also around LeBron when he lost to Dallas [in 2011], and he went into a deep funk of reflection….” James did not even leave his house for two weeks, and when he did, it was to get right back to the drawing board, meet with legends like Hakeem Olajuwon, who helped him improve his post game. Once again, Doncic seemingly did not show a similar level of dedication. “‘We were hoping that would be the impetus to take Luka to the next level, and then he came back in the same shape, arguably in worse shape than he did in the prior season and that’s kind of when we knew that, hey, maybe this isn’t gonna work, and that’s when the conversations began…'” Doncic’s fitness was a topic of discussion for months leading up to his departure from Texas, which no one saw coming. But Sedano’s revelation shows that there were discussions in the backroom about trading Doncic away. In hindsight, however, everyone recognizes that Harrison (and whoever the other executives were) was wrong. The trade was a mistake, and owner Patrick Dumont has admitted as such. Doncic is loving life in Los Angeles, has gotten fitter over the summer, and is putting up MVP-esque numbers. The Lakers are 8-3 and look like real contenders. Dallas meanwhile, are 3-8 and are second-last in the Conference standings.

Sci-fi Kiwi comedy finds gold in a cosmic portal in the backyard

His life is upturned when Lucy (Louise Jiang, Sweet Tooth), disappears during her 18th birthday backyard barbecue, and his paternal instincts kick in. What ensues in the alternative realms into which they are transported, where Lower Hutt has been taken over by horrors such as smart fridges, a Big Brother-meets-Squid Game reality show, a stratospheric property boom and a cultured utopia devoid of rugby, is wildly entertaining and laugh-out-loud funny, with props reminiscent of early Doctor Who. Encircling the father-daughter bonding narrative is an eccentric ensemble of ordinary archetypes. Their mock reality-show descriptions in the second episode pinpoint their personalities – the classic poser (Millen Baird); the conspiracy theorist (Milo Cawthorne); the hedonistic recent divorcee (Sophie Hambleton); her drippy ex-husband (Cohen Holloway); and a mediocre real estate agent (Mayen Mehta). Comedian Ginette McDonald (aka Lyn of Tawa for New Zealanders in the know), is the nosy, mauve-rinsed neighbour. Warren’s wife, Hinemoa (Kali Kopae, who also appeared in Wellington Paranormal), becomes much more than the slightly fierce mum figure in the kitchen, as other incarnations of her personality are explored. Maori language, with subtitles, is threaded through the dialogue, the blending of two cultures presenting opportunities for amusing misunderstandings when intentions are lost in translation, and insults go undetected. The sight gags and pop-cultural references, even a friendly dig at fellow Kiwi Temuera Morrison’s Star Wars credits, run seamlessly together, meaning there’s barely time to stop giggling at the genius of one joke before another lobs.

Asian markets make tepid gains as US shutdown set to end

SINGAPORE: Stocks tiptoed forward at the start of Asian trading on Wednesday as the U.S. Congress looked set to end the federal shutdown and traders looked for direction in the absence of clues from government data services. MSCI’s broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan was up 0.1% in early trading as members of the House of Representatives prepared to vote on a measure that could restore funding to government agencies and end a shutdown that started on October 1 and is now the longest in U.S. history. Australian stocks led gains, advancing 0.2% as lithium miners drove commodity stocks higher, while Japan’s Topix jumped 0.6%. “Sentiment improved after the U.S. Senate passed a bill to end the longest U.S. government shutdown on record,” analysts from Westpac wrote in a research report. “The House is expected to approve the bill in the coming days.” S&P 500 e-mini futures were trading flat after a mixed session for U.S. stocks on Tuesday that saw the Dow Jones Industrial Average rise 1.2% to reach a record close while the Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.3%. In the absence of data from federal government agencies, traders focused on weekly jobs data from ADP, on Tuesday which showed private employers shed an average of 11,250 jobs a week in the four weeks ending on October 25. Traders are increasing bets on further easing from the Federal Reserve. Fed funds futures are pricing an implied 68% probability of a 25-basis-point cut at the U.S. central bank’s next meeting on December 10, compared to a 62% chance a day earlier, according to the CME Group’s FedWatch tool. The U.S. dollar index , which measures the greenback’s strength against a basket of six currencies, was last down 0.2% at 99.451, trading near the lowest levels this month. The U.S. dollar was little changed against the yen at 154.13 and the euro at $1.1583. Brent crude rose 1.6% to $65.09 per barrel, the highest since October 31, on the impact of the latest U.S. sanctions on Russian oil and optimism over a potential end to the government shutdown, although oversupply concerns limited gains. Gold was trading 0.4% higher at $4,141.35 per ounce. Bitcoin was last up 0.4% at $103,074.41.

Woman stabbed at Chicago train station just months after Ukrainian refugee died in eerily similar attack

Chicago police are searching for a man suspected of stabbing a woman at a train station just months after a Ukrainian refugee was killed in a similar attack. The unidentified suspect approached a woman sitting on a bench at the UIC-Halstead CTA Blue Line stop in the city's Near West Side at around 11.14pm on Saturday. He then took a knife out of his backpack and stabbed the woman in the chest. The man then fled the scene northbound on South Morgan Street - but not before being caught on surveillance footage with the apparently bloody knife still in his right hand. Police described the suspect as an African American male who stands approximately six feet tall and weighs between 160 to 180 pounds. He was seen wearing a bright pink beanie, a gray hooded jacket, an orange sweatshirt, light blue jeans and white sneakers. The man was also carrying a gray backpack at the time. Meanwhile, the 27-year-old victim suffered a minor injury and was transported to a local hospital in good condition, according to Fox News. The attack comes just months after Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska, 23, was killed on another commuter train in North Carolina. She had boarded the light-rail train in Charlotte just before 10pm on August 22 after finishing her shift at a local pizzeria and was heading home to her boyfriend when Decarlos Brown Jr, 34, stabbed her in the neck multiple times with a pocket knife. Disturbing surveillance footage from the attack showed the suspect watching Zarutska for some time after she sat in the row in front of him, before taking what appeared to be a blade from his pocket. Brown then stood up and loomed over the Ukrainian refugee, swinging the knife at her as she sat on her phone. As Brown then exited the train, he left behind a trail of blood - though other passengers did not seem to realize the murder that occurred in front of them. Video then showed Zarutska curled up with her knees against her chest and her hands over her mouth while she looks up at her attacker. About 15 seconds later, she fell to the floor. Other clips obtained by the Daily Mail showed Brown stroll down the carriage and remove his hoodie, which had likely been sprayed with blood during the attack. In another camera angle, police could be seen tackling Brown to the ground and placing him in handcuffs just five minutes after the grisly murder. Brown was also caught on surveillance footage arriving at the train station. He appeared to be in an agitated, zombie-like state as he staggered back and forth on the station platform. At one point, Brown sat on a bench and slumped over with his head hung low. He also began rocking from side to side, prompting one commuter to turn their head and observe his strange behavior. Following his arrest, Brown - who is schizophrenic - told his sister in a phone call from jail that he had been hearing voices in his head before he launched the deadly attack. His sister, Tracey Brown, has since blamed the 'broken' US mental health system for repeatedly releasing her brother back onto the streets over several years when he tried to admit himself to the hospital for treatment. He also has a lengthy criminal record and has been through the court system multiple times, with a personal gallery of mugshots to show for it. 'He was a high risk. He was not in his right mind. He was not safe for society,' Tracey Brown told the Daily Mail. 'We know what he has been dealing with the last three years,' she added. 'And now an innocent woman is dead.' Brown now faces state murder charges as well as federal charges of violence against a railroad carrier and mass transportation system resulting in death. He is eligible for the death penalty, based off a prior conviction in 2015 for robbery with a dangerous weapon. Meanwhile, Zarutska's boyfriend Stas Nikulytsia, who she had just moved in with, shared a heartbreaking video showing her embracing her new life in America before her dream was cut cruelly short. In a poignant compilation posted to Instagram, Nikulytsia showed his girlfriend reveling in her new life - sipping cocktails, eating barbecue and dancing with friends. The video also captured tender moments, including the couple embracing in an elevator, kissing the camera and enjoying time together. Zarutska emigrated from Ukraine with her mother, sister, and brother to escape the war, and she 'quickly embraced her new life in the United States,' her family wrote in her obituary. They also said she had managed to become fluent in English 'within a very short time', and was 'hoping for a new beginning' when she came to Charlotte. Zarutska posted a photograph of the high rises which punctuate the North Carolina city's skyline on Facebook just nine days before she died. The image appears to have been taken through the window of a train like the one she boarded on her final day. Her family said that before starting her new life in the US, Zarutska graduated from Synergy College in Kyiv with a degree in Art and Restoration. 'She shared her creativity generously, gifting family and friends with her artwork,' they said. 'She loved sculpting and designing unique, eclectic clothing that reflected her vibrant spirit.' 'Though she enjoyed adventures, sightseeing, and exploring new places with her close friends, Zarutska was also a homebody at heart, happiest when surrounded by family and loved ones,' her traumatized family added. 'Her mother lovingly recalls her ability to sleep for wonderfully long stretches—something she affectionately called an 'artist's gift.'' Zarutska's family added that she had 'a deep love for animals' and dreamed of becoming a veterinary assistant. 'She often cared for her neighbors' pets, and many fondly remember seeing her walking them through the neighborhood, always with her radiant smile,' they said.

Educator touts benefits of bringing more community services to schools as connection program looms

Funding for a trial to bring wraparound services into schools has been welcomed by educators who say programs improving a sense of community are already making a difference to attendance rates. The Connected Community School trial is set to kick off next year for four schools, bringing community health and social services into schools for easier access. The $21 million, four-year trial was first announced in August and will take place in Ashburton Drive Primary School, Clarkson Primary School, Girrawheen Senior High School, and Roebourne District High School. Part of the funding will also go towards strengthening ties between schools and local sporting or community groups. Girrawheen Senior High School teacher Adam Clarke said his school were already running a high performance program which had seen flow on effects in the classroom. “We’re trying to get the best out of the students, they are committed to being at school on time, being prepared, and they have to meet a certain criteria, with that our attendance rates have improved,” he said. Mr Clarke said he was excited to see a similar idea roll out in the rest of the school. “We are just really excited about the prospect of where can we go from here, not just from a sport perspective, but from a mental health and wellbeing perspective,” he said. “Most learning areas being involved in some initiatives, connecting with local groups and organisations that want to be a part of what we’re doing here.” The programs have been funded by the Better and Fairer Schools Agreement between the State and Federal Government’s which will see around and extra $2.4 billion go towards public schools over the next decade. Federal Education Minister Jason Clare joined his State counterpart Sabine Winton at the school in Perth’s north and touted the link between health and education. “These sort of supports at our schools can help to make sure that young people who need a bit of support get the support they need,” he said. “When their health’s okay, their education thrives, more young people finish school, more young people go on to TAFE, and more young people go on to those university degrees.”

Dollar eases as traders eye December Fed cut on weakening US jobs market

SINGAPORE: The dollar eased on Wednesday after private-sector U.S. jobs data stoked worries about the health of the labour market, with investors also bracing for an imminent U.S. government reopening that is expected to unleash a backlog of economic releases. Overnight, payroll processor ADP said that U.S. firms were shedding more than 11,000 jobs a week through late October, underscoring how hiring trends are evolving on a week-to-week basis and pointing to further weakening in a labour market being closely monitored by Federal Reserve policymakers. The dollar fell in the aftermath of the data release and struggled to recover its losses in early Asia trade on Wednesday, as traders once again ramped up bets of a Fed cut in December. The euro was steady at $1.1586 and sterling distanced itself further from a seven-month trough to last trade $1.3149. Against a basket of currencies, the dollar languished near its lowest in more than a week and was last at 99.46. “The alternative data, I think, overall points to a softer labour market picture… but whether we’re seeing a worsening deterioration in the U.S. labour market, I think that remains an open question,” said Sim Moh Siong, a currency strategist at Bank of Singapore. “I think the broad set of data suggests that the labour market is cooling, but only gradually so, and I think we should see some confirmation of that from the return of official data likely by next week, with the reopening of the U.S. government.” Traders are now pricing in close to a 68% chance that the Fed would ease rates by 25 basis points next month, up from around 62% a day ago, according to the CME FedWatch tool. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury yield was down 3 bps at 4.0791% early in Asia, after trading was closed in the U.S. on Tuesday owing to the Veterans Day holiday. The two-year yield also fell roughly 3 bps to 3.5596%. “We remain of the view that the balance of risks to the labour market, inflation and consumption favour a 25-bp rate cut next month,” said Brian Martin, ANZ’s head of G3 economics, in a note. Fed policymakers have in recent times struck a more measured tone on further easing, citing the absence of key economic data due to the U.S. government shutdown as one reason for caution. But a reopening could be imminent, as members of the House of Representatives headed back to Washington on Tuesday for a vote that could bring the longest shutdown in history to a close. The Republican-controlled House is due to vote on Wednesday afternoon on a compromise that would restore funding to government agencies and end a shutdown that started on October 1. The breakthrough has also lifted risk currencies like the Australian and New Zealand dollars, which were last up 0.02% each at $0.6529 and $0.5656, respectively. The safe-haven yen has meanwhile been bruised from the overall risk-on market sentiment, last standing at 154.08 per dollar after sliding to a nine-month low of 154.495 in the previous session. It has fallen nearly 0.5% for the week so far. The yen also faced further headwinds from expectations of greater fiscal largesse in Japan, after Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said she would work on setting a new fiscal target extending through several years to allow more flexible spending, essentially watering down the country’s commitment to fiscal consolidation. She renewed calls for the Bank of Japan to go slow on interest rate hikes, in sharp contrast to the hawkish tilt from Fed policymakers.

“Is India really that dirty?” Australian vlogger’s viral video praising Patna challenges foreign portrayals of Indian cities

Fozzie Bhai Australian vlogger's video on Patna An Australian travel vlogger, known as Fozzie Bhai on Instagram, is receiving praise for a recent video that challenges common stereotypes about Bihar’s capital, Patna. In his latest reel, he highlights the city’s cleanliness, warmth, and civic pride, describing it as a “friendly” and “surprisingly clean” city.“Patna, Bihar isn’t what desis made it out to be. It is actually a very friendly city,” he says in the video, greeting locals in Hindi while walking through the city’s streets. He points out that while infrastructure work is ongoing, Patna remains notably clean. “There’s clearly an emphasis on cleanliness here,” he adds.Calling out foreign creatorsFozzie, who has lived in India for almost two years, often posts candid insights into Indian cities. In this video, he focused on Patna’s evolving image and civic discipline. In the caption, he appeared to criticise foreign vloggers who portray India negatively. “Is India really as dirty as the ragebait travel vloggers would have you believe?” he wrote. “After living here for nearly two years, I can tell you it’s not as black and white as it’s often shown.” View this post on Instagram Positive reactions from viewersThe reel quickly gained traction, resonating with Indians who are often frustrated by negative portrayals of their cities. Many users expressed pride and amusement in the comments. “Tier 2 cities in India are cleaner than tier 1 cities,” wrote one user. Another commented, “I’ve seen foreigners appreciate Bihar more than our own people. Ironic, isn’t it?”Locals welcomed the vlogger’s gesture. “Welcome, bro. Spend some time here—you’ll meet the nicest people,” one user wrote. Another remarked humorously, “You won’t get views showing this side—Bihar only gets negative PR!”Live EventsThe video has since sparked a broader conversation about how smaller Indian cities like Patna are evolving — not only in infrastructure but also in attitude. As one viewer summed up, “Sometimes it takes a foreigner to remind us how far we’ve come.”Add as a Reliable and Trusted News Source Add Now! After Anne Burrell, TV chef Mynie Steffens dies at 43 as helicopter crashes into power lines in tragic accident

In a devastating turn of events, South African celebrity chef and television host Mynie Steffens died on Monday, November 10, after a helicopter crash at a citrus farm near Patensie in the Eastern Cape. The 43-year-old, best known for co-hosting the lifestyle cooking show Speel met Vuur, was reportedly flying her helicopter while spraying orange fields with pesticides when tragedy struck.According to the Accidents and Incidents Investigations Division (AIID), the aircraft collided with power lines shortly before crashing to the ground around 8 a.m. local time. The division confirmed that the helicopter sustained “substantial damage due to impact force.” Images from the scene showed the wrecked helicopter lying amid the fields, its body torn apart from the collision.Steffens was not just a chef, she was a daring spirit. A trained helicopter pilot, cookbook author, and TV personality, she embodied adventure both in and out of the kitchen. Her VIA TV series Speel met Vuur, translated as Play With Fire, perfectly captured her personality: fearless, curious, and full of creative spark. Her close friend and co-host Aldi van der Walt, who created the show alongside Steffens after the two reconnected years after high school, described the loss as “a massive shock” and a “tragic blow” to everyone who knew her. Van der Walt said Steffens lived life “to the full,” constantly brimming with ideas that she transformed into success stories. Those who knew Mynie Steffens remember her as more than a TV face, she was the person who made time for everyone, no matter who they were. Van der Walt described her late friend as having “a big heart, gentle soul, and humour that made her irresistible.”South African network VIA TV also paid tribute, sharing a heartfelt post that read, “You were adventurous until the end. With Play With Fire, you showed us all how to live with curiosity and bravery. Sleep softly.”Steffens’ passing has left a deep void in South Africa’s entertainment and culinary world, a life lived with fire, ended far too soon.

King leads Remembrance ceremony for war dead

Australian actress Nicole Kidman has signed up to star in US filmmaker Osgood Perkins’ upcoming horror movie The Young People. The Oscar-winning actress will join a cast which includes Lola Tung, Nico Parker, Tatiana Maslany, Lily Collins, Cush Jumbo, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville and Lexi Minetree. Production is underway in Vancouver, and while plot details are being kept under wraps, it has been reported the film centres on a couple of school friends, one of whom begins to develop worrying behaviours. The Young People is the first project under the first-look deal Perkins and his production company Phobos have with Neon. The film marks their latest collaboration following the success of horror-thriller Longlegs, which was the highest-grossing independent film of the year, and The Monkey. Kidman – who recently filed for divorce from country music star husband Keith Urban – is currently in post-production on crime series Scarpetta. It was recently announced she will also star alongside Elle Fanning in a new eight-part legal thriller titled Discretion. Meanwhile, the Australian actress has been kept busy with Practical Magic 2, on which she was delighted to work with Sandra Bullock again. She told People magazine: “(Our dynamic is) insane. I can tease her, and she teases me. “We’re both living in London, very close to each other… I adore her and she is so funny and so lovable. And we’re just having the best time together.” Kidman certainly hasn’t been hiding away since her split from Urban. Last month she opened a special Vogue tribute show at Paramount Studios wearing a stunning black Chanel gown that many considered her “revenge dress”.
