President Donald Trump did tout the end of the Schumer shutdown on Veterans Day, and why not? This shutdown inflicted unnecessary pain on the American people for nothing. Senate Democrats virtually took the exact deal offered by Republicans in mid-October: a short-term continuing resolution to get dozens of appropriations bills finalized. This CR funds government through January 30. SNAP benefits are funded through September 2026, with a vote on Obamacare subsides set for December. The irony is if the Democrats didn’t shutdown the government, the Obamacare subsidies could’ve been resolved by now. Patience Fueled Ryan Dunn’s Unexpected Journey To The NBA

After his senior year at LuHi, he chose to do a postgraduate year at the Perkiomen School, having received no college offers. By then, he had grown another couple of inches, but did not come across like a future impactful Division I player yet. Even after his postgraduate year at the Perkiomen School, he only “ranked No. 95 on the 247Sports.com 2022 Prospect Ranking list.” Patience was key throughout Dunn’s journey, and he would need more of it, but it got his foot in the door. He got an offer from Virginia, which he initially lost as he bided his time with his college decision. He was willing to walk on and pay out of pocket before a transfer opened a spot for him to receive a scholarship. The College Rise And NBA Draft In his freshman season at Virginia, Ryan Dunn averaged only 2.6 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game. His sophomore season was when he made his large impact. Dunn averaged an ACC-leading 2.3 blocks per game along with 8.1 points and 6.9 rebounds. He earned a spot on the ACC All-Defensive Team and caught scouts’ eyes with his defensive upside and athleticism. At the Draft Combine, Dunn was measured at 6-foot-6.25 inches flatfoot with a whopping 7-foot-1.5 wingspan and a 38.5-inch max vertical. Despite concerns about his weight and offensive ability, he was far from the average kid I once knew. The Denver Nuggets drafted him with the 28th pick in the 2024 NBA Draft before quickly shipping him off to Phoenix. Early NBA Years Dunn would rise to the starter role in his rookie year, which meant starting next to legendary scorer Kevin Durant. While the presence of such a player meant Dunn didn’t have to carry as many scoring duties, KD gave Dunn a firsthand look at his workouts and encouraged Dunn to shoot the ball, giving Dunn confidence and a blueprint for success. While Dunn, at 30.6% for his career, is still largely inefficient from three, he is progressing as a player, averaging 8.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.0 steals and 0.9 blocks per game on 48.8% shooting this year, all of which are improvements from last season. He has also put on muscle, now weighing 216 pounds. Ryan Dunn may not be a star yet, but his career is a testimony to anyone with big dreams. Keep at it, because even if you have zero offers out of high school, it doesn’t mean your career is over.

A month after the Australian Signals Directorate warned Beijing’s cyber soldiers were “routinely” hunting “Australian government networks for cyber espionage purposes”, Australian Security Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) Director-General Mike Burgess drove the point home in a keynote speech on Wednesday. “I have previously said we’re getting closer to the threshold for high-impact sabotage,” Mr Burgess told an Australian Securities and Investments Commission forum. “Well, I regret to inform you: we’re there now.” In a barely veiled reference to China, he told the room hostile actors were constantly testing security. “ASIO is aware of one nation state – no prizes for guessing which one – conducting multiple attempts to scan and penetrate critical infrastructure in Australia and other Five Eyes countries, targeting water, transport, telecommunications, and energy networks,” Mr Burgess said. “The reconnaissance is highly sophisticated, using top-notch tradecraft to find your networks, test for vulnerabilities, knock on digital doors and check the digital locks. “And when they have penetrated your networks, they actively and aggressively map your systems, and seek to maintain persistent undetected access that enables them to conduct sabotage at a time and moment of their choosing.” More to come.

The alleged offences include violent disorder, affray and unlawful assault. Sewell has been remanded in custody since the attack, and is applying for bail. Beforehand, he could be seen entering the court in a white shirt in cuffs, and raised his right hand. At an earlier hearing, Sewell told the court he grew up in Melbourne where his family was based but did not have good relations with his brother. He said he spent two-and-a-half years in the Australian army after leaving high school and completed part of an engineering degree before changing to “focus on politics”. In 2015, he said he was unjustly fired from his job as a youth councillor for high-risk children due to his beliefs and had since had half a dozen jobs in the construction industry. Sewell argued any prison time would “negatively affect” his young family. He told the court he takes a small living allowance from the National Socialist Network, which he described as a political movement with community events and a home-schooling network.

Just Eat has announced it is closing down Menulog in Australia, after 20 years of operation in the country. The closure will impact approximately 120 Australian workers, with customers no longer able to use the service from midnight Wednesday November 26. “This strategic decision reflects our ​focus on accelerating growth and investments in other markets and to deliver the best experience for customers, partners and couriers,” a statement from Just Eat said. The Transport Workers Union national secretary Michael Kaine called it a shock for thousands of food delivery riders while calling out previous governments for their lack of laws to protect gig economy workers. “In the gig economy, workers are still languishing with below-minimum wage rates, no sick leave or superannuation, and deadly pressure to rush to make a living and avoid being deactivated,” Mr Kaine said. “We are paying the price for Coalition governments’ inaction now, not just with jobs that are exploitative and dangerous, but with less options for customers in an unsustainable industry engaged in a race to the bottom.” Mr Kaine thanked Menulog for trying to do the right thing for years. Menulog managing director Morten Belling said it was a tough day for the business and the decision was not taken lightly. “Our priority now is to support our customers, couriers and partners, Mr Belling said. “This is why we are providing everyone a two-week transition period, in which customers can redeem unused vouchers and credits. Russia loses embassy court bid

A 99-year lease was granted to Russia in 2008, but was withdrawn after laws were passed following advice from ASIO that it could pose a national security threat. Lawyers for the Russian Federation subsequently took the Commonwealth to the High Court, arguing the law was not supported by the constitution. In its judgment, the High Court unanimously agreed the Act was a “valid exercise of legislative power” under the constitution, which empowered lawmakers to enact legislation to acquire property on just terms. The Commonwealth was, though, ordered to pay half the cost of Russia’s legal fees, which Moscow had sought as a “fallback case”. Lawyers for Russia argued that, in ending the lease, Australia was not implementing any international sanctions as it might have been obliged to do. The Commonwealth argued the purpose of the Act was to remove “the national security threat” presented by Russia’s occupation of land so close to Parliament House. It had also argued it would be “incongruous” to pay compensation to a foreign state “because it terminated a lease held by that state in order to prevent a risk to the security of Parliament House that would otherwise be caused by that very state”. “It is neither fair nor just for Australia to compensate a foreign state in those circumstances,” they argued. Embassy site lay derelict Russia was granted a 99-year lease to the Griffith site in 2008, the same year it had a brief war with neighbouring Georgia. The embassy was intended to replace an ageing building nearby which it had occupied for decades, but has instead sat largely incomplete following disputes with a builder and the Covid pandemic. In 2023, the National Capital Authority failed in its bid to have the lease torn up in the Federal Court. Instead, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese introduced new laws to revoke the lease. In a press conference at the time, Mr Albanese said the government had “received very clear security advice as to the risk presented by a new Russian presence so close to Parliament House”.

More than 60 members of the Nationalist Socialist Network (NSN) rallied outside Macquarie St on Saturday, chanting the Hitler youth slogan “blood and honour” and carrying a banner stating “Abolish the Jewish Lobby”. It came amid reports the group were quietly attempting to form a new political party, White Australia, under which NSN NSW leader Jack Eltis, 28, submitted a Form 1 application to police for a public assembly prior to the rally. On Wednesday, Mr Minns cautioned members against forming a party, stating there was a “high bar” they would have to meet, with only about 60 political parties registered to run in federal elections and about 20 in NSW. “In order to register a political party, you need 750 people who are prepared to sign the register,” he said. “That’s 750 people who would effectively out themselves as associated with neo-Nazis. “Anyone who’s thinking about signing the paperwork to register this political party has to think long and hard about whether they want their name and their reputation publicly associated with Nazis in NSW.” Asked if he would support changes to electoral laws to stop groups like NSW becoming political, Mr Minns said he was “not going into rush into that”. “What I would say is that there’s a public interest test available to the electoral commissioner for she makes a decision about the registration of the political party,” he said. “I don’t want to impact an independent decision that I assume that a nakedly racist organisation would be a very strong risk of breaching that public interest test.” On Tuesday, Labor MLC Stephen Lawrence suggested rally organisers may have submitted a Form 1 to police for the purpose of it being knocked back and being taken to the Supreme Court as a “test case”. Asked about the claim, Mr Minns said: “I couldn’t profess to know what was going through the minds of that group.” Mr Minns and NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon have said they were not informed about the rally in advance on Saturday. The event has sparked widespread condemnation from both sides of the political aisle.

Former CFMEU boss John Setka arrested

The former leader of the union’s powerful Victorian division was hit with the charges on Wednesday, The Age reports. The masthead reports Mr Setka has been charged with seven counts of using a carriage service to menace. A carriage service conveys communication and examples include mobile phones, social media and email. If convicted, the maximum penalty for the offence is three years in jail. Mr Setka stepped down from his position as CFMEU Victorian state secretary in July last year, following allegations of widespread misconduct in the union. Later that year, the federal government forced the construction division of the controversial union into administration. More to come.
