Over 1,000 US Starbucks workers walk out, shutting stores nationwide

More than 1,000 unionised baristas walked off the job on Thursday, staging a strike at 65 stores across the US to protest what they describe as stalled labour talks and a lack of progress on a long-delayed contract. The walkout was timed for maximum impact. Red Cup Day — when Starbucks hands out free reusable holiday cups — usually draws heavy crowds. Starbucks Workers United, the union organising baristas, said the strike had already forced some stores to close and warned more could follow if negotiations continue to drag, according to the Associated Press.Stores in at least 45 cities were expected to be affected, including New York, Philadelphia, Minneapolis, San Diego, Dallas, St. Louis, Columbus and Seattle, Starbucks’ hometown. The strike is open-ended, organisers said, with additional stores ready to join if the company doesn’t return to the bargaining table.Starbucks downplayed the disruption. With roughly 10,000 company-owned stores and another 7,000 licenced locations, the coffee chain said most outlets were operating normally. As of midday Thursday, the company said it was on track to meet or exceed its sales forecasts. “The day is off to an incredible start,” Starbucks said in a statement, the AP reported..preferred-source-banner{ margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom:10px;}Around 550 stores are unionised nationwide. Some others voted to unionise but have since closed, including 59 shut by Starbucks in September as part of what it called a broader reorganisation.STALLED TALKS AT THE CENTER OF THE STANDOFFWorkers say the strike stems from Starbucks’ failure to reach a contract agreement after three years of union activity. The first store unionized in Buffalo in 2021, and Starbucks later pledged to finalize a deal by the end of 2024. But after CEO Laxman Narasimhan, who made that promise, was pushed out last year, workers say talks froze under new CEO Brian Niccol. The two sides have not negotiated since April.WORKERS WANT BETTER HOURS AND HIGHER PAYWorkers say they're seeking better hours and improved staffing in stores, where they say long customer wait times are routine. They also want higher pay, pointing out that executives like Niccol are making millions and the company spent $81 million in June on a conference in Las Vegas for 14,000 store managers and regional leaders. The union also wants Starbucks to address hundreds of unfair labor practice complaints, including allegations of retaliatory firings and policy changes that workers say were imposed without bargaining- EndsWith inputs from Associated PressPublished By: Aashish VashisthaPublished On: Nov 14, 2025

US signals "positive developments" in trade talks with India

By Reena Bhardwaj Washington, DC [US], November 14 (ANI): The US has indicated that trade negotiations with India are advancing, with a senior administration official describing 'a lot of positive developments' in recent discussions between the two countries. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, the official confirmed that Washington is pursuing a reciprocal trade agreement with New Delhi while simultaneously addressing concerns over India's purchases of Russian oil. 'I think we've had a lot of positive developments with them recently,' the official said, adding that talks could yield results 'before the end of the year.' 'I think we've had a lot of positive developments with them recently. We have two things going on with them. Of course, we have a reciprocal trade negotiation, but we also have a Russian oil issue, where we've seen market improvement on that end. So I think that we, I'd like to say we can relax and take a break, but there's still a lot to do, but a lot of positive progress going on already, and we may have more to come before the end of the year,' the official told ANI. The US administration is managing two parallel issues with India. The first involves reciprocal trade negotiations, which typically aim to balance tariffs and market access between countries. The second concerns what the official termed the 'Russian oil issue,' though they noted 'market improvement on that end.' The White House announced Thursday that it has finalised preliminary trade agreements with four Latin American nations - Argentina, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Guatemala. According to administration officials, these deals will offer tariff reductions on goods that cannot be grown naturally within US borders. The comments came as the official outlined America's expanding trade engagement across multiple regions. Washington has been pursuing 'quite constructive conversations' with Central and South American nations and has issued joint statements with Vietnam and Indonesia. The official also mentioned recent progress with Switzerland, suggesting a pattern in which the Trump administration seeks bilateral deals rather than multilateral agreements. As US President Donald Trump's close associate Sergio Gor begins his role as ambassador to India, Trump faces another diplomatic test. Speaking at Gor's swearing-in on Monday, US President Donald Trump indicated that tariff reductions on Indian imports could be forthcoming, pointing to potential progress on a trade deal. A reciprocal trade deal could address long-standing issues between the world's largest and fifth-largest economies, including: US concerns over Indian tariffs on American goods, particularly motorcycles and agricultural products, India's desire for restored preferential trade status and greater access to US markets, Technology transfer and intellectual property protections, and Services sector access, particularly for Indian IT professionals. The acknowledgement of progress comes after years of stop-start negotiations between Washington and New Delhi. Previous attempts at comprehensive trade agreements have stalled over disagreements on tariffs, data localisation, and e-commerce rules. Neither the Indian Ministry of Commerce nor the Ministry of External Affairs had issued statements on the American official's comments at the time of publication. Trade between the US and India reached approximately USD 190 billion in 2024, with both nations expressing ambitions to significantly increase bilateral commerce. (ANI)
