This role is based at our office in Illovo, Johannesburg.Main purpose of the role:The Analyst: Strategy in the Growth & Strategic Development (G&SD) department is responsible for: 1) Supporting the development and implementation of the Assore Group’s strategy and strategic development by carrying out high-quality strategic research and analysis, and 2) Helping to drive and coordinate the Assore Group’s strategic planning process. Main responsibilities:Strategic AnalysisMining Industry Research & AnalysisMonitor trends in, and develop insights on, key themes in the global mining industry and ensure that these insights are integrated into the Assore Group’s strategy and strategic outlook.Develop insights on mining industry best practice in strategy, structure and operating models, and ensure that these insights are integrated into the Assore Group’s strategy.Carry out comparative analysis of the Assore Group and Assore Group businesses against appropriate peer groups on key strategic business metrics and ensure that these insights are integrated into the Assore Group’s strategy and strategic outlook.Commodity Research & AnalysisMonitor trends in, and develop insights on, key global macroeconomic themes and their impact on global commodities markets and ensure that these insights are integrated into the Assore Group’s strategy and strategic outlook.Maintain an in-house Assore Group view on medium- and long-term supply, demand, costs, and prices (and their drivers) across various commodity industries, supported by detailed, high-quality, research and analysis.Serve as the Assore Group expert and coordinator for medium- to long-term commodity price and exchange rate forecasts, leveraging data-driven models and industry insights.Research Inputs & OutputsInteract with internal and external experts to gather and analyse relevant information.Identify key, trusted, external sources for data, research and analysis to support and inform work carried out internally.Project manage specific, well-scoped, pieces of research and analysis outsourced to appropriate consultants and/or experts.Translate complex research findings into clear, concise recommendations that support strategic business decisions.Present research findings in high-quality written reports and high-quality, well-structured and focused presentations for key internal and external stakeholders and decision-makers.Investment Monitoring & AnalysisWork with the rest of the G&SD team on continuous monitoring and analysis of the performance of the Assore Group’s various strategic investments, including within their respective industries and against industry peer companies.Work with the rest of the G&SD team in analysing specific commodities, industries, companies and peer companies in support of specific investment proposals.Research & Data ManagementMaintain and enhance appropriate databases for macroeconomic, strategic and commodity-related research, ensuring data integrity and easy and flexible access for stakeholders.Strategic PlanningSupport the Strategic Planning process within and across the Assore Group including at Group, Division, Business Unit (BU) and Corporate Office Function (COF) level.Assist internal and external resources in the preparation for, and facilitation of, strategic planning workshops and offsites, including conducting supporting strategic research and analysis.Regularly monitor progress against strategic objectives and strategic targets across the Group using fit-for-purpose strategic dashboards. Support the Business Planning process within and across the Assore Group including at Group, Division, Business Unit (BU) and Corporate Office Function (COF) level to ensure consistency and alignment with the Assore Group strategy and the strategic planning process.Requirements:BSc, BEng, BCom and/or CASome formal education/training in strategy, economics and/or commodities will be advantageous.Professional Experience:Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in a similar role related to the mining and/or commodity industries.An interesting candidate will have a minimum of three (3) years in a role involving equity research, management consulting and/or investment analysis related to the mining industry.
