OverviewBIOWEG is seeking an Application Scientist to lead the development of formulations for our natural biodegradable materials. In this role, you will innovate new products and improve existing formulations while ensuring compliance with safety, regulatory and quality standards.If you have experience in personal care formulation and enjoy working in a fast-paced startup environment, this position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to BIOWEG’s product development and growth.Your RoleDevelop and optimise formulations across personal care, home care, pharma, and agri-related segmentsDesign and execute experiments to achieve target performance and rheologyDefine processing parameters and compatibility matrices for raw materials and activesDevelop cost-in-use models to compare performance and efficiency against incumbent productsTranslate experimental outcomes into application notes, starter formulas, scale-up SOPs, and TDS guidancePerform rheology profiling, particle analysis, surface/colloid characterization, and efficacy testingBuild benchmark datasets and dose-to-performance curves for natural and synthetic alternativesPrepare SOPs, test methods, and concise technical reports suitable for internal QA and customer transferContribute to regulatory documentation including SDS, questionnaires, and evidence packs for compliance with regulationsDefine Critical Quality Attributes per SKU and provide feedback to Process and QC for manufacturability and batch releaseSupport Sales and Business Development in translating technical insights into clear application narrativesYour ProfileMSc or PhD in Formulation, Cosmetic Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Polymer/Colloid Science or similar areaAt least 5 years hands-on formulation in Personal/Home Care, Pharma and/or Agri with demonstrated DOE-driven optimisationStrong command of rheology, surfactant/polymer colloids, electrolyte/pH effects, dispersion stability and scale-up pragmaticsExperience building stability programs and defining practical acceptance criteria; familiarity with CIPAC-style tests for Agri or industry-standard tests for Personal/Home CareExcellent technical communication (reports, TDS, customer presentations)Proficiency with analytical equipment such as Rheometer, Particle Size Analyzer, HPLC and FTIR, etc and ability to interpret dataAbility to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced startupExcellent written and verbal communication skills in English; Fluency in German is a plusAbout UsBIOWEG is a purpose-driven company developing bio-based alternatives to fossil-based ingredients using Biotech and Green Chemistry.We create sustainable products that match or even outperform fossil-based alternatives while remaining price competitive.
