Job Description

The Associate Director, University Advising Services provides critical leadership in advancing the vision and mission of Rowan University by fostering a student-centered advising culture that promotes academic success, retention, and graduation. The Associate Director, University Advising Services (UAS) provides strategic leadership and operational management for professional academic advisors serving students within specific academic colleges/schools (initially, the Ric Edelman College of Communication, Humanities, and Social Sciences and the College of the Arts). The Associate Director is a managerial role which reports to the leader of University Advising Services and is a member of the leadership team for Rowan’s University Advising Services and University College, contributing to the vision and strategic direction for the organization and the partner college/school.Primary DutiesProvide strategic leadership and operational management for the University Advising Services professional advisors serving students within specific academic unitsProvide excellent supervision of academic advisors including ability to provide direct feedbackProvide comprehensive onboarding training and ongoing professional development for academic advisors in the relevant academic unitsCoordinate advising services for the students in the relevant academic units, including all aspects of the advising processUtilize data analytics to drive decision-making, monitoring advisor caseloads, appointment demand, wait times, and student outcomes to ensure resources are allocated effectively and advising services are both proactive and responsivePlan and implement advising practices which help all students to succeed and to reduce gaps due to demographic and socioeconomic factors Assist in the coordination and implementation of events that involve advising, such as new student orientation, open houses, and college and departmental eventsProvide innovation and collaboration on student success initiatives within the academic unitParticipate in University Advising Services leadership meetings to plan strategy related to advising policies, procedures, professional development, and assessmentAssess advising services within the relevant academic unitsConduct regular advisor meetings to share updates, provide professional development, gather team input, and share advising best practicesServe as a trusted resource and escalation point for advisors, faculty, and administrators when addressing complex student issues, policy interpretations, and sensitive concernsProvide direct advising services to students, in the form of both individual and group sessions, as neededServe as the primary leader and point of contact to the relevant Dean’s offices, Department Chairs/Heads, Program Coordinators, faculty, and other offices to ensure effective communication with students, advisors, and other constituentsCollaborate with the Department of Student Success Analytics & Systems in order to maximize the capabilities of advising‐related software, reports, and toolsStay abreast of institutional information including admissions requirements, academic programs, course changes, deadlines, important dates, costs, expanding facilities, updates in college- and University-wide initiatives, transfer requirements, and state and federal mandatesRepresent University Advising Services and University College in institutional committees and external professional organizations through active memberships and participation (e.g., NACADA)Monitor advisor work schedules, including flexible work arrangements and time off requestsOccasional evening and weekend work is requiredOther responsibilities as assignedRequired QualificationsFive years of professional experience in higher education working with students in an advising, student support or counseling environment including three years of supervisory or leadership experienceMaster’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Counseling in Educational Settings, Student Personnel Services, or other relevant fieldDemonstrated knowledge of NACADA Advising Core CompetenciesDemonstrated understanding of the advising needs of a diverse student population including first generation, returning adults, and underserved populationsExperience providing a range of academic advising and related servicesPreferred QualificationsDemonstrated success in supervising and directing the work of professional staff advisorsDemonstrated ability to develop and implement strategic planning initiatives and conduct evaluations and assessment of advising services programsDemonstrated ability to interact effectively with multiple constituencies (Chairs, Deans, students, parents, etc.) in a fast-paced and evolving environmentDemonstrated ability to adapt to and lead changeDemonstrated commitment to inclusion and belonging for all members of the communityDemonstrated experience using advising-related technology and student-related data to support student success and advising activitiesDemonstrated ability to work autonomously and make sound judgments regarding referral of issues to the leadership of University Advising Services and other appropriate administratorsExcellent written and oral communication skillsExcellent interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skillsExceptional customer service skills and student-centerednessAbility to learn new technologies quicklySalary & BenefitsIn compliance with The State of New Jersey's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $110,000 to $135,000. When extending any salary offer, Rowan University considers many factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, work experience, education, training, key skills, internal equity, as well as market and other organizational considerations.For eligible employees, benefits include: comprehensive NJ State health, dental and retirement benefits, extensive accrued time off/paid holidays, and tuition reimbursement for employee, spouse, and dependents to attend Rowan University, Glassboro.
