Business Development Director, Team Lead (West Coast Commercial) Salary: $130k–$190k DOE + sales /team performance incentivesWe are currently seeking a Business Development Director, Team Lead to support the continued growth of our West Coast commercial team. This role is ideal for a strategic, people-focused sales leader who thrives in fast-paced, technical environments and knows how to build a culture of collaboration, accountability, and high performance.In this position, you will guide a team of territory-based sales professionals through the complete sales cycle, provide consistent coaching and mentorship, and ensure that commercial activities align with broader business strategy. The ideal candidate is action-oriented, customer-focused, and brings a strong entrepreneurial mindset.ResponsibilitiesLead, manage, and support a commercial sales team to meet and exceed revenue targets.Coach and mentor direct reports through prospecting, discovery, negotiation, and closing activities.Attend in-person client meetings with your team to provide senior-level support and hands-on coaching.Identify opportunities early in the sales cycle to maximize share of wallet within key accounts.Collaborate closely with Operations and technical teams to ensure seamless delivery of services and solutions.Maintain strong working relationships across commercial, operational, and technical functions.Communicate effectively with all levels of sales and business development personnel within the assigned sector.Serve as a positive representative of the organization through industry involvement, professional associations, project teams, and employee engagement activities.Represent the organization at industry conferences, associations, and customer events to expand visibility and support business development goals.Lead and participate in all stages of the sales process — qualifying, relationship building, needs assessment, solution presentation, and closing.Conduct regular pipeline reviews, ensuring accurate CRM records and identification of critical success factors for key opportunities.Build and maintain a strong working knowledge of service offerings; actively participate in training and coaching opportunities.Ensure adherence to organizational policies including terms and conditions, trade compliance, code of conduct, and all employee guidelines.Requirements3–5 years of experience managing an outside sales team.5–10 years of technical sales experience, preferably within highly regulated sectors such as pharmaceutical, biotech, laboratory testing, or related scientific industries.Strong understanding of the pharmaceutical and biotech markets, including regulatory expectations.Bachelor’s degree required (BS preferred, but other four-year degrees will be considered).Ability to interpret documents including customer contracts, quotes, technical specifications, and marketing materials.Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present effectively to customers and internal groups.Ability to perform calculations related to pricing, discounts, commissions, and basic algebraic concepts.Demonstrated ability to solve practical customer challenges and interpret a variety of written and verbal instructions.Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets company policy.Experience interpreting technical testing requirements and procedures.Proficiency with Microsoft applications (Dynamics AX, CRM, Word, Excel).High level of professionalism, flexibility, and maturity to represent the organization at external and internal events.Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure, especially when managing multiple priorities and deadlines.Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build trust, maintain open communication, and foster a collaborative team culture.Ability to engage clients, win new business, understand customer requirements, and support the development of proposals including cost estimates and terms.Ability to travel up to 75%, including overnight travel as needed.
