Job Description

Position OverviewThis part time position is responsible for coordinating, and/or teaching NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I and II, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I and II, volunteer fire officer, and National Fire Academy direct delivery courses and programs; This position coordinates and collaborates with other program coordinators and managers and reports to the Fire & Rescue Program ManagerKansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute is a unit of KU Lifelong and Professional Education (LPE) housed on the Lawrence campus. The Institute was created in 1949 by Kansas legislature with the mission to train and credential Kansas firefighters in local jurisdictions.

The Institute serves fire departments and firefighters through a “traveling instruction service,” providing hundreds of training and certification events each year in counties across the State of Kansas. The mission of Kansas Fire & Rescue Training Institute is to provide accessible, comprehensive training and credentialing for fire and emergency response personnel to promote health and safety in Kansas communities.

The successful candidate must be eligible to work in the U. S. by the effective date of the appointmentJob Description55% - Coordinate training requests, instructor assignments, and course deliveries. Serve as primary point of contact for receiving and processing training requests for NFPA 1021 Fire Officer I & II, NFPA 1031 Fire Inspector I & II, Volunteer Fire Officer, and NFA “hand off” courses- including online and hybrid deliveries. Serve as lead instructor for assigned courses within program area. Coordinate assigned training programs. Approve training requests as defined by the Director. Coordinate and cooperate with other Program Managers within KFRTI.

Schedule instructional material and support for classes with support staff assistance. Review course documentation for approved courses for completeness, accuracy and that instructor wages/expense are within the previously approved parameters. Identify and assign qualified KFRTI contract instructors to teach courses within assigned program areas. 35% Coordinate National Fire Academy direct delivery programsSchedule, host, and prepare NFA“direct delivery” courses, approximately 20 per year. Coordinate NFA direct delivery program. Duties include accepting training requests, maintaining list of authorized instructors, and assignment of instructors for courses. Serve as the primary contact for National Fire Academy direct delivery program.

Assign instructors and schedule contract instructors for NFA courses. Reviewing course documentation and approve contract instructor pay. 5% - Represent the Institute with fire service organizations: Represent the Institute with fire service and related organizations. This includes assisting fire service organizations in accessing KFRTI training systems and educating fire service organizations. 5% - Other duties as assigned: Position RequirementsFrequent in-state travel will be required for this role. A valid drivers license is required at time of hire and for the duration of appointment.

Required QualificationsHigh school diploma and seven years progressive experience conducting/providing fire service training OR a bachelor’s degree and three years’ experience conducting/providing fire service training. IFSAC and/or Pro Board National Certification as a Fire Officer I & II or Executive Fire Officer (EFO) from the National Fire Academy (NFA).

IFSAC and/or Pro Board National Certification as a Fire Instructor IIFSAC and/or Pro Board National Certification as a Fire Inspector I or the ability to obtain certification within one year of employmentPreferred QualificationsIFSAC and/or Pro Board NFPA 1041 Fire Instructor II certificationIFSAC and/or Pro Board (or) FDSO Certification or National Fire Academy course completion for NFPA 1521 Fire Department Safety Officer CertificationNational Fire Academy course completion of Fire and Emergency Services Training Program Manager (R04445);IFSAC and/or Pro Board NFPA 1403 Live Fire Instructor certification (or) International Society of Fire Service Instructors Live Fire Training Instructor credential.

Capacity and willingness to mentor Contract Instructors and to be mentored by KFRTI staff;Demonstrated willingness to stay apprised of current, relevant research data and evolving best practices in the fire service.
