OverviewApplications are sought for the part-time position of Chairperson of Wine Australia for a term of up to three years.Australian wine is a unique, high-quality valued added product, enjoyed in over 100 markets around the world. We are looking for a leader with significant board experience to oversee Wine Australia, with the opportunity to build on the reputation of Australian wine as a global leader.Wine Australia is the Australian grape and wine sector’s statutory body for research, innovation and adoption, marketing, and regulation.Wine Australia helps to foster and encourage profitable, resilient and sustainable Australian winegrape and wine businesses by investing in research and innovation (R&I), building markets, disseminating market information and knowledge, encouraging adoption and ensuring compliance through our regulatory functions.Wine Australia also work closely with representative organisations, wine sector bodies and research partners to support the long-term success of the Australian grape and wine community.For further information about Wine Australia, please visit wineaustralia.com.Role of the Chairperson:The Wine Australia Chairperson has primary responsibility for steering Wine Australia toward fulfilling its responsibilities and stimulating positive board dynamics. The role of the Chairperson is to:ensure compliance with statutory obligationsensure that investment in RD&E is undertaken in accordance with government and industry priorities for RD&E and other policy directions as well as ensuring that investments provide value to industryconsult and communicate with government, industry representative organisations and other stakeholdersfoster a strategic and collaborative approach to Wine Australia’s activities that links to broader objectives for the agriculture sectormaintain strong governance practices with high levels of transparency, regular reviews, including periodic review of the board’s functioning and performanceparticipate in the Council of Rural RDCs Chairs meetings and work collaboratively with other RDCs.Wine Australia’s Board consists of a Chair and up to seven non-executive Directors appointed by the Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.The Chairperson is a statutory office holder. It is important to understand the responsibilities and liabilities as a director holding public office. Applicants should review the Public Governance, Performance and Accountability Act 2013, which sets out the accountability for directors of Australian Government statutory offices. Wine Australia’s functions are prescribed by section 7 of the Wine Australia Act 2013 (the Act).Skills and experience:To lead one of Australia’s most prominent agricultural research, marketing and regulatory bodies, applicants should demonstrate highly developed experience and capability in:leadershipsetting strategic business directionbusiness acumencommunication and consultation skillsboard experienceappreciation of governance practicesunderstanding of governmentknowledge and/or experience in Australia’s grape growing and wine making industry.Note: A person who is a member of the executive of Wine Australia’s representative organisation must not be appointed. If nominated, that person must resign from the position at the representative organisation before appointment is possible.RemunerationRemuneration and allowances for the Wine Australia Chairperson are prescribed by the Australian Government Remuneration Tribunal. The current determination sets remuneration at $87,940 per year for the part-time position and provides for Tier 2 travel allowance.LocationWine Australia’s head office is in Adelaide, South Australia.Travel may be required to attend meetings and other activities.
