Job Description

The Division of Sidewalk & Inspection Management (SIM) is responsible for maintaining 12,750 miles of sidewalk and more than 185,000 corners throughout the City. The Pedestrian Ramp Program (PRP), a unit within SIM, is committed to providing pedestrian (curb) ramps citywide that meet applicable accessibility laws and guidelines. Pedestrian ramps are a critical component in providing safe and accessible means of travel throughout New York City. Pedestrian ramps provide access on and off our streets and sidewalks and are an essential tool for all pedestrians, especially aging New Yorkers and persons with disabilities.

SIM seeks to hire a highly motivated and creative professional to assist with research, analysis and reporting efforts associated with the Pedestrian Ramp Program. The selected candidate will be part of a fast-paced, collaborative team.

Under the direction of senior staff the selected candidate will assist in organizing existing and new data collection and analysis programs; conducting geospatial analysis; analysis of field data and maintenance of our pedestrian ramp inventory; assessing survey data for the efficient assignment of future work and preparing documents for future contracts; contributing to ongoing data analysis efforts for tracking, prioritizing, and evaluating unit initiatives; and executing the Pedestrian Ramp Program’s goals by developing, evaluating, prioritizing and monitoring citywide accessibility in coordination with agency stakeholders.

The data analyst will also conduct research and analysis to inform current and future policy, planning and programs; manage research projects with internal and external stakeholders; and use data to identify patterns, perform analyses, and analyze funding and investment needs. They will use databases, GIS and other tools to identify and help resolve potential conflicts. Duties will also include preparing research and other periodic reports and presentations and public facing materials, as well as clearly communicating findings to both technical and non-technical audiences.

CITY RESEARCH SCIENTIST - 21744Minimum Qualifications For Assignment Level I (only physical, biological and environmental sciences and public health) A master's degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological or environmental science or in public health. To be appointed to Assignment Level II and above, candidates must have:

A doctorate degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and one year of full-time experience in a responsible supervisory, administrative or research capacity in the appropriate field of specialization; or A master's degree from an accredited college or university with specialization in an appropriate field of physical, biological, environmental or social science and three years of responsible full-time research experience in the appropriate field of specialization; or Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above.

However, all candidates must have at least a master's degree in an appropriate field of specialization and at least two years of experience described in "2" above. Two years as a City Research Scientist Level I can be substituted for the experience required in "1" and "2" above. NoteProbationary PeriodAppointments to this position are subject to a minimum probationary period of one year. Preferred SkillsThe preferred candidate must be detail-oriented, accurate, and thorough, and must be a capable team player possessing excellent communication skills and a positive attitude.

Candidates should have experience developing analytical and visualization products conducting quantitative and or geospatial research and working with large, diverse datasets. Ideal candidate must be able to demonstrate strong creative and analytical problem-solving skills. Experience in transportation, transportation policy or accessibility, and experience working with the public, community groups, and NYC agencies, is also desired. The ideal candidate will be motivated problem-solvers who are familiar with transportation's best practices and able to work both independently and as part of a team. Preference will be given to candidates who possess strong analytical and communication (written and verbal) skills.

Experience or interest in AutoCAD, ArcGIS, Excel, PPT, and/or Adobe Creative Cloud is desirable.
