Job DescriptionPOSITION TITLE: School Police OfficerCLASSIFICATION: Support StaffREPORTS TO: Administrative DirectorCERTIFICATIONS: PA State Police Academy Graduation/Employment with PA State Police OR Successful completion of Act 120 training and five (5) years’ experience as a municipal police officer. QUALIFICATIONS: Current mandated PA Criminal History, PA Child Abuse, and Federal FBI Fingerprinting clearances. Previous school experience is preferred. Must be able to establish and maintain positive relationships with school-age children. Must be able to work a flexible schedule, including after school and nighttime school activities based on need.
Must be free of physical, mental, emotional conditions that may adversely affect the exercise of a police officer's powers. Must complete/update mandated training in First Aid, CPR, AED, Leal Updates, threat assessment, violent critical incident training, and firearms qualifications. Must possess a high degree of integrity, responsibility, diplomacy, and reliability, and must maintain confidentiality. POSITION GOAL: Enhance CMAVTS student safety and well-being by fostering positive relationships, proactively addressing potential issues, and maintaining a secure learning environment. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES: Participates in school activities. Supports administration in educating and informing teachers and staff of current incidents and safety issues.
Trains teachers and staff on safety procedures. Serves on School Safety Committee and attends monthly school and Safety and Security meetings Serves as a consultant to the administration in creating and revising school policies related to safety, security, and emergency management. Patrols school buildings and campuses. Prevents and identifies issues, maintaining high visibility within the school to prevent disturbance and criminal behavior. Answers and responds to alarms, radio calls, reports of incidents, and requests for assistance Works with school administration and facilities management to ensure a safe environment for all students, staff, and visitors.
Reports hazardous and/or unusual conditions. Supports truancy prevention and intervention efforts. Enforces Pennsylvania statutes in dealing with criminal matters arising on school property. Makes arrests if needed and submits process through local courts for prosecution. Guides students, faculty, and staff on proper campus behavior as dictated by statute and school board policies. Assists local and state police in investigations involving school students or school employees, as well as management of incidents near the school. Creates written reports related to all investigations and provides them to administration and local law enforcement agencies upon request.
Escorts and removes unauthorized persons from school premises. Challenges suspicious or unidentified persons on school grounds to identify them and determine the cause. Administers first aid and CPR as a first responder when able and appropriate. Appears in court as needed, serving as affiant, witness, or representative of the school district. May transport students with official cause as determined by school administration. Performs other related duties as assigned. TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Commensurate with experience and qualifications and aligned with district policies. SELECTION: The appointment shall be made by the Joint Operating Committee following the recommendation of the Administrative Director.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated annually by the Administrative Director or designee.
