Pay rates are those in NHS Scotland: Consultant salary scale - £111,430 - £148,064 or AfC Band 8d - £103,764 - £108,206, though exceptionality is always an option we can consider. The DPH is happy to have an informal conversation on 01896 825 560.Following a Restructure Of Our Department We Will Be Looking To Recruit a Consultant Permanently To Join Our Existing Senior Team Of 2 Public Health Consultants And 2 Heads Of Service. We Recognise That It Can Take Some Time To Fill a Post Permanently So We Are Looking For Someone Interested In a 6 Month Contract, In The First Instance. We Are Looking For Anyone With An Interest In a Portfolio That Includes health intelligence, immunisation, alcohol and drugs policy/delivery, obesity, children and young people, social prescribing and health checks BBV TB Health ProtectionWe have a department of 50+ who cover the needs of the people in the Scottish Borders. We are co-terminous with our local authority, and Integrated Joint Board which makes partnership work smoother, though still challenging due to fiscal constraints. Health protection is now being delivered by a unified East Regional service which means that there is no on-call commitment but we retain an active interest in the other domains of public health. We oversee a high performing vaccination service and a separate more integrated screening service and host 2 trainees in Public Health. Our focus going forward, will mirror the needs of our population which has an older demographic, with more self-care needs, and a shrinking young person’s population which must meet UNCRC and The Promise from Scottish Government. We intend to develop our Public Health strategy in the next 3-6 months which the applicant will contribute to.This is a rare opportunity to work in a small rural Board where you can make a measurable and substantial impact in a short time period. We are currently developing a Board Clinical Strategy, with the aim of moving resourcing upstream into prevention. Additional strategic capacity will help us deliver some of that shift. The postholder will be responsible for managing 4 individuals including 2 who will be supporting our new health intelligence function. The arrangements in Scotland are such that you will be based within the NHS, acquiring NHS pay & conditions, with the challenge of working into partnerships wearing an NHS perspective.The Scottish Borders covers 116,000 people and includes the commuter belt to Edinburgh in the north. It is roughly the same geographical size as Kent, or Northumberland with beautiful countryside and small historic towns such as Hawick, Galashiels, Peebles, Selkirk and Melrose. These small towns lend themselves to case-control studies from a population perspective. Weare currently collaborating with Oxford University in a project looking at endoscopy screening funded by UK Cancer Research, arrangements we certainly want to encourage!As we are a small Board, our staff tend to have large and broad portfolios which means they find extra satisfaction and can enhance their CV for posts that may only encompass smaller components in other larger organisations.
