Design & Project Engineer – Engine Packaging / Power Systems Location: Ephrata, Pennsylvania Reports to: Engineering Manager Classification: Full-Time, Exempt Experience Level: Senior (10–20 years preferred)  Position Summary Stauffer Diesel, Inc. is seeking a highly experienced Design & Project Engineer to lead the mechanical design, integration, and project execution of custom industrial diesel and generator power systems. This position is ideal for a senior-level engineer with a broad mechanical background who is comfortable owning complex projects from concept through production, while also helping mature the processes and standards of the engineering department. The Design & Project Engineer will work closely with the Engineering Manager and other departments to develop robust, manufacturable designs for diesel engine power units, generator sets, and custom-engineered solutions. The role also carries departmental influence—providing technical leadership, mentoring, and the development of standardized engineering procedures, documentation, and workflows.  Key Responsibilities:Design & Engineering Engineer complete industrial diesel and generator packages including base frames, fuel systems, cooling systems, intake and exhaust routing, enclosures, and accessory drives. Develop detailed 3D models, bills of material, and oversee fabrication/assembly drawings using SolidWorks. Apply sound principles of vibration isolation, structural design, and thermal management under extreme loads and harsh environmental conditions. Design and specify fuel, hydraulic, and coolant circuits, air intake and exhaust systems, and power take-off assemblies such as clutches, couplings, belt drives, air compressors, and related accessories. Select and integrate key components such as radiators, charge air coolers, silencers, air/oil/fuel filters, hydraulic pumps, and possibly generator ends. Ensure all designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and serviceable. Project & IntegrationManage assigned projects from concept through release, coordinating with manufacturing, purchasing, parts, and service departments. Conduct application reviews for new engine integrations including cooling capacity, exhaust layout, controls integration, and packaging constraints. Creating and submitting reports for application reviews to engine suppliers Create and maintain clear supporting technical and sales documentation for released products Interface directly with customers and suppliers on engineering requirements, options, and design validation. Maintain compliance documentation for EPA-certified off-road and stationary genset packages.Process & Department Development Establish and maintain SOPs, templates, and design standards. Improve internal workflows for revision control, design release, and documentation. Integrate best practices gained from previous engineering environments to strengthen the department’s overall efficiency and consistency. Provide mentorship and technical guidance to engineers and designers. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline. 10–20 years of progressive engineering experience in engine packaging, mechanical power systems, or industrial/machinery design. Proven ability to manage complex mechanical design projects from concept through release. Strong proficiency with SolidWorks, including sheet metal, weldments, and large assemblies (PDM experience preferred). In-depth understanding of:  -Structural and vibration design (skid bases, bracketry, enclosures)  -Fluid systems (fuel, air, exhaust, coolant, hydraulic)  -Thermal management and environmental durability  -Power take-off systems (clutches, drives, couplings, hydraulic pumps)  -Sheet-metal and light tubing fabrication  -Generator end selection and AC power fundamentals (preferred) Working knowledge of electrical and control system integration sufficient to coordinate with controls engineers and perform application reviews Excellent organizational, communication, and documentation skills. Demonstrated ability to work independently while contributing to cross-functional teams. Must be able to pass a drug test, background check and MVR check.Preferred Experience Prior experience with diesel engine OEMs (Deutz, FPT, Cummins, John Deere, Perkins, etc.). Exposure to low-volume or custom fabrication/manufacturing environments. Knowledge of NVH and thermal/acoustic insulation design and testing. Experience supporting production, field testing, or service of power units or gensets. Familiarity with ISO, ASME, or similar quality management systems. Familiarity with EPA emissions categories for nonroad industrial and stationary genset engines. Work Environment This position is based on-site at our Ephrata, Pennsylvania facility. Hybrid work flexibility available. Occasional travel to customers or supplier sites may be required. What we Offer:Competitive WagesCompany Paid Training ProgramsHealth/Dental/Vision Insurance available401k with Company MatchCompany paid Life & Disability Insurance. Supplemental Life & Accident Insurance availablePaid HolidaysPaid Time OffEstablished Safety ProgramOpportunities for Career Advancement
