Doctoral researcher in mechatronics

Posted: 1 days ago

Job Description

The Laboratory of Sustainable Mechatronics at the LUT School of Energy Systems is seeking a motivated junior (doctoral) researcher to develop and implement advanced model order reduction (MOR) methods for flexible multibody dynamics. The work focuses on the floating frame of reference formulation (FFRF) and parametric MOR extensions enabling real-time simulation. The position offers an excellent opportunity to work at the interface of computational mechanics, mechatronics, and control systems, combining theoretical and applied research. Our laboratory at the Department of Mechanical Engineering advances sustainable technologies through cutting-edge research and practical impact. The project aims for a fundamental methodology that enables efficient parametric ROMs for multibody simulations (e.g., geometry/material/operating-condition variations). Industrially relevant use cases, such as heavy machinery with flexible structures and sliding or telescopic booms, serve as motivating demonstrators, but the core contributions are methodological and broadly applicable.Candidate profileWe Expect Candidates To Have a Strong Background In Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics, Robotics, Computational Mechanics, Control, Or a Closely Related Field. We Value Experience Or Clear Interest In The Following AreasStructural dynamics / finite element method, flexible multibody dynamics (FFRF, component mode synthesis, Craig-Bampton)Model order reduction (POD, reduced basis, parametric ROMs) and hyper-reductionScientific programming (Python, Matlab, C++), numerical methods, and good software practicesReal-time simulation, digital twins, or HIL/SIL environments, which will be considered an assetResearch focusIn this position, you will develop and test novel methods for reducing the computational cost of flexible multibody simulations, enabling real-time performance for complex mechanical systems. You will (i) design and analyse parametric reduction strategies for flexible bodies in FFRF, (ii) integrate appropriate hyper-reduction to ensure real-time performance, and (iii) validate representative flexible mechanisms (e.g., slender booms) under parameter changes (geometry, materials, loads). The work includes theory, numerics, and implementation in a research codebase and/or coupling with existing MBD/FE tools. What We Expect From YouWe are looking for a motivated junior researcher with a master’s degree (M.Sc. (Tech.) or equivalent) in a relevant discipline, such as mechanical engineering, robotics, mechatronics, or a closely related field. You should be able to work independently, be a skilled communicator, and work well with others in our international research community. You should have a strong academic background and a genuine interest in pursuing doctoral studies and be committed to completing your doctoral degree on schedule. You will be expected to apply for the right to complete doctoral studies at the LUT Doctoral School within the first two months of your appointment. What We OfferWe offer a collaborative and supportive academic environment that encourages independence, innovation, and professional growth. The job includes a wide range of staff benefits, such as a holiday bonus, occupational health care, and a research incentive scheme with personal rewards for high-quality publications that meet specific criteria. Hybrid work arrangements are available, with regular presence required at the Lahti campus. The employment relationship will start with a one-year term (including a six-month trial period) and may be extended for up to three additional years, depending on the progress of your studies and research. The work will begin in early 2026. The hours are flexible, supporting work-life balance. In accordance with the collective agreement for Finnish universities, the position follows the system of 1,612 annual working hours for expert and support staff. The starting salary is approximately EUR 2,780 per month, based on the university salary system for teaching and research staff.Interested?
