The PHAMA Plus Program in Samoa supports development activities in the root crops, ornamental, and kava sectors, including biosecurity functions. It focuses on improving farmers' processing capabilities to enhance the quality and quantity of kava products. As part of this effort, five tunnel design solar dryers have been introduced in Savaii, transforming the drying processes for agricultural products. This eco-friendly technology will benefit more farmers, and the Program plans to create a business case to help farmers and processors understand the investment needed and the potential advantages of using solar dryers.
The consultant will be responsible for leading the design of the methodology and conducting all in-country stakeholder consultations and research to develop a business case. The work will draw on the outcomes from PHAMA Plus’s investments with five kava farmers in Savaii and stakeholders in Apia. The business case will need to be used by farmers, MSMEs and other interested stakeholders to inform business decisions, business planning and potentially support applications to access finance for investing in solar dryers.
