The internship is a part-time position that continues while you study.Economist Intern Program Overview As the rule maker and adviser for Australia’s energy markets, the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is at the forefront of the energy transition. The program enables you to work with a broad range of stakeholders and industry experts to deliver market design outcomes that benefit consumers. You will gain exposure to a variety of complex energy policy issues, work on multiple projects and contribute to reviews and rule changes by undertaking economic research and analysis, and policy design.Your main responsibilities will include:Contribute to providing high-quality economic advice to Commissioners, executive leadership and policy teams to support and inform conceptually sound and evidence-based decision-making;Contributing to thought leadership on current developments and emerging trends in the energy sector as a critical component of achieving the AEMC’s strategic prioritiesApplying analytical frameworks and models that apply advanced economic concepts and analyses to decision-making process;Communicating complex issues or concepts in a way that is accessible to a wide range of stakeholders.About you:A student going into their 3rd year in 2026 and interested to enrol in economics honours in future years, or students undertaking their honours, research masters or doctorate in economics in 2026A collaborative, proactive, independent, results-driven, thorough, thoughtful disposition;Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain economic concepts to stakeholders and non-technical audiences;The ability to work autonomously with a proactive approach and the interpersonal skills necessary to build effective partnerships;Flexible and innovative approach to problem-solving, which takes into account diverse views and requirements; andDemonstrated analytical skills, including quantitative skills and the proven ability to understand complex subject matters quickly.We recognise the importance of university study to our interns and work with them to ensure that their work commitments do not interfere with their studies.
