Educational Video HostAbout PalomaThe achievement gap has remained unchanged over the past half century, despite trillions invested in classroom intervention. Research shows that families—not schools—are the biggest determinant of student success. Parents’ love for their children is the single greatest—and most underutilized—natural resource in education.Paloma is a venture-backed edtech startup that harnesses AI to unleash parents' untapped teaching potential. Our mobile web app helps marginalized families build and sustain a habit of tutoring their kids for 15 minutes a day. Imagine parents sitting with their kids and engaging in rigorous, curriculum-aligned, and joyful instruction daily. By the time students enter middle school, Paloma users will have given their kids the equivalent of an entire extra year of school!In our partner networks— including Houston ISD, KIPP, & Rocketship—75% of all families in participating grades are tutoring their kids using Paloma! 70% of participating families are tutoring their kids at least 3x per week, meeting the standard for high-dosage tutoring. As one district leader put it, “Paloma awakens the sleeping giant of parents as tutors.”About the opportunityTeam up with Paloma to help build out Paloma’s curricula for phonics such that we are able to support even more schools, teachers, and families to work together to support their kids to become excellent readers and learners.By supporting this vital work you will:Enable teachers to create personalized, skill-relevant homework for students;Support parents to connect with teachers to get guidance on their child's needs;Help students to be engaged with personalized content.What this role entailsYou will be creating approximately 400 short parent-facing videos (45-90 seconds each) that cover a range of early literacy skills. These videos offer context about skills to parents, as well as set them up to do activities in the app.Think of the videos like Tiktok or Instagram Reels–short and sweet, bite-sized learning nuggets.We will be offering specific talking points for you to hit in each video, but we would like to avoid actual scripting to keep the tone conversational. For this reason, it is preferable if you have been an elementary teacher/have knowledge about early literacy.Important logisticsWe anticipate this to be 40-50 hours of work, starting on 12/1 and ending by 12/19.The project rate is $75/hr.You will be shooting these videos yourself on your phone and sending them to us to upload.You can do this gig from anywhere, but it is preferable that you record videos with a real background -- think your kitchen, living room, or office.To applyWatch this sample Paloma video explaining to families how to practice the “ch” sound with their child.Review the teaching points:Lesson: How to read the /ch/ sound in wordsThe new sound is /ch/;This is a new skill for your child because /ch/ is two letters that make one sound;When you practice with your child, start by showing them what to do firstModel how to read the word “such” – /s/ /u/ /ch/;Model how to read the word “chop” – /ch/ /o/ /p/;If time permits, demonstrate the mistake a child could make saying /k/ and /h/ and remind the parent that if their child makes a mistake, to show them again how to say the sounds, and then have the child practice.Create a video (no longer than 90 seconds) of yourself as the host, teaching a parent this skill in your own style!Please review this document for tips on how to create the best video possible. Please send the video and your resume to: jobs@palomalearning.com by 11/7 with the subject line Educational Video Host.
