Job Description

Regional EHS Consultant – (Client Side)Location:Chiba Region, Tokyo, JapanRole Purpose:To provide expert Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) oversight and strategic guidance during the construction and commissioning of hyperscale data centers, ensuring compliance with Japanese regulations, international standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001), and client-specific safety policies.Key Responsibilities:1. EHS Strategy & ComplianceDevelop and implement project-specific EHS plans aligned with Japanese law, local permitting, and global standards.Ensure compliance with Japanese Occupational Safety and Health Act, fire safety codes, and environmental regulations.Liaise with local authorities and regulatory bodies for permits, inspections, and audits.2. Risk ManagementConduct risk assessments for high-voltage electrical works, heavy lifting, confined spaces, and hazardous materials.Implement control measures for critical risks (arc flash, fire suppression systems, refrigerants, diesel fuel storage).3. Contractor OversightMonitor EPC and subcontractor compliance with EHS requirements.Review and approve method statements, JSA (Job Safety Analysis), and lifting plans.Lead weekly safety walks and enforce corrective actions for non-conformance.4. Incident ManagementEstablish incident reporting and investigation protocols.Drive root cause analysis and implement corrective/preventive actions.5. Sustainability & ESGSupport environmental impact assessments and waste management plans.Ensure alignment with client sustainability goals and Japanese green building standards.6. Training & CultureDeliver EHS induction programs for contractors and client teams.Promote a zero-harm culture and continuous improvement mindset.7. ReportingMaintain accurate EHS metrics (LTIFR, near misses, audits).Provide weekly and monthly reports to client leadership and global EHS teams.Qualifications & Experience:Degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Engineering, or related field.Certifications: NEBOSH IGC, ISO 45001 Lead Auditor, or equivalent.Experience:8+ years in EHS roles, with at least 3 years in data center or mission-critical construction.Familiarity with Japanese safety regulations and permitting processes.Skills:Strong stakeholder management and cultural adaptability.Fluent in English; Japanese language skills highly desirable.Key Competencies:Leadership in high-risk environments.Analytical and problem-solving skills.Ability to influence contractors and drive compliance.
