African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) has announced the commencement of its African Medical Centre of Excellence (AMCE) project in Abuja, Nigeria. It will provide world-class care to both low and high-income patient groups across the continent. The AMCE in Partnership with King's College Hospital London will be located in Abuja, which is a hub for travel in Nigeria and West Africa, enabling it to attract patients across the region.The African Medical Centre of Excellence will be implemented in four phases over a six-year period, starting with a 170-bed specialist hospital before expanding to a 500-bed facility. The centre will have the potential to provide services to over 200,000 patients in Nigeria and a further 150,000 patients from neighbouring West African countries within its first five years of operation.The clinical areas the centre will specialise in are Cardiology, Haematology and Oncology. A range of businesses providing relevant health support will support this facility and provide commercial services to its patients and staff, thus creating a healthcare ecosystem sustainably designed to deliver long-term value to its community and region.This is an outstanding initiative and creates a unique opportunity to be involved in the opening chapter of this exciting project that is set to make a decisive impact on non-communicable disease care across Nigeria and West Africa. What makes this facility even more special is its very close partnership with King's College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.Job SummaryThe Emergency Medicine Consultant plays a critical role in delivering high-quality care within the Emergency Department (ED). This position involves managing a diverse range of acute illnesses and injuries, providing stabilisation and definitive treatment to patients, and ensuring smooth patient flow through the department. The Consultant will utilise advanced diagnostic and therapeutic skills to make rapid, evidence-based decisions, particularly in life-threatening situations.The role requires leadership in a dynamic, high-pressure environment, guiding a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, and support staff to deliver patient-centered care. This includes participating in clinical governance, quality improvement initiatives, and maintaining compliance with national and international standards. The Consultant General will also play a pivotal role in teaching and mentoring junior medical staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and excellence within the department.As a representative of the hospital, the Consultant is expected to build and maintain strong communication channels with other departments, including critical care, radiology, and surgery. They will contribute to the development and implementation of protocols that enhance the efficiency, safety, and quality of care within the ED. This role is ideal for a highly motivated individual committed to advancing emergency medicine and improving outcomes for patients in Nigeria.Key Responsibilities Clinical Practice:Provide advanced assessment, diagnosis, and management of acute medical and surgical emergencies.Oversee the stabilisation and resuscitation of critically ill patients.Perform emergency procedures, including intubation, central line placement, and chest tube insertion.Ensure timely transfer or admission of patients requiring further specialised care.Leadership and Management:Lead the emergency team during shifts, ensuring efficient patient care and workload distribution.Develop and implement clinical pathways and protocols for emergency care.Manage departmental operations, including resource allocation and staffing.Participate in hospital-wide committees related to emergency services and patient safety.Education and Training:Supervise and mentor junior doctors, medical students, and nursing staff.Organise and deliver training sessions on emergency procedures and protocols.Support staff development through regular appraisals and feedback.Quality Improvement and Governance:Monitor and evaluate clinical outcomes to identify areas for improvement.Participate in audits, incident reviews, and patient safety initiatives.Ensure compliance with regulatory and accreditation standards.Communication and Collaboration:Actively participate in multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings.Maintain effective communication with patients, families, and other healthcare providers.Liaise with external agencies, including ambulance services and referral centers.Research and Development:Promote and participate in research activities related to emergency medicine.Publish findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferencesQualificationsMBBS or equivalent medical degreeFellowship in Emergency Medicine (e.g., FCEM, FRCEM, or equivalent)Valid medical licence to practise in NigeriaAdvanced Life Support (ALS) and Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) certificationsPostgraduate qualifications in critical care or pre-hospital medicineCertification in ultrasound-guided proceduresExperienceMinimum 7 years of post-specialisation experience in emergency medicineProven expertise in managing complex and high-acuity casesExperience working in resource-limited settingsResearch experience with publications in emergency medicine journals
