Our mahi (work) is organised around the delivery of our three core services: Environmental Regulation and ProtectionCommunity Preparedness and Response to HazardsPublic TransportKōrero mō te Tūranga | About the Role Our Hydrology Monitoring field team runs a network of rainfall sites and water level monitoring stations in our rivers and lakes across the Canterbury region.
The data our team collects helps support our science and informs decision making about the management of Canterbury’s surface water resources. You’ll enjoy working as part of a highly skilled technical field team, using your initiative and drive to help achieve team outcomes. You’ll maintain and develop strong relationships with other field teams and scientists to align our work and contribute to the objectives of our Science Strategy. You’ll support the monitoring and field data collection with hands-on technical work and commitment to data quality.
The position requires regular fieldwork in remote and sometimes rugged outdoor locations, often working alone. It requires operating in or near rivers, carrying heavy equipment, driving long distances, and working in variable weather. Mōu │ About YouIdeally, you’ll have a tertiary or technical qualification like a trade certificate or relevant experience in Hydrology. You’ll be able to assist the team using a variety of methods and equipment to obtain data relating to the water quantity in our area. This will include measuring of streams and rivers, surveying and gathering rainfall information as per the National Environmental Standards.
You’ll will also be able to assist in our maintenance programmes, and with monitoring site upgrades and installations, and participate in monitoring during high-flow events. While you will be trained and mentored by other team members in all aspects of Hydrology to maintain the national environmental monitoring standards, the role is suited to candidates with developing experience in field-based environmental monitoring and data collection. You’ll need to fully meet the physical and technical duties of this role, including working alone in the field, adhering to health and safety protocols, and following procedures with limited supervision.
The role is not suited to candidates with significant restrictions on availability or field readiness.
