Position SummaryUnder the direction of the Communications Director, the primary function of the Graphic Designer is to conceptualize, design, and produce high-quality visual materials that support and advance the city’s communication objectives. This role transforms complex data and detailed information into compelling, easy-to-understand graphics that engage, inform, and inspire diverse audiences, including residents, city staff, and community partners.
The Graphic Designer will work collaboratively with multiple departments to develop a wide range of visual content — from reports and presentations to digital media and promotional materials — ensuring that all creative outputs align with the city’s brand identity and strategic goals. By delivering impactful, visually cohesive designs, this position plays a critical role in strengthening the city’s connection with its community and enhancing public understanding of city initiatives and services.
Essential Duties And Responsibilities Translate city briefs and reports into compelling, visually dynamic layouts and presentations that effectively tell the city’s story to internal and external audiences. Conceptualize, design, and produce engaging graphics and layouts for a wide range of materials, including department reports, citywide reports, brochures, magazines, billboards, the city website, maps, posters, banners, flyers, advertisements, logos, social media content, and branded merchandise. Transform technical and data-heavy reports into clear, visually appealing PowerPoint presentations that resonate with various audiences. Develop sophisticated 2D visual designs incorporating vector graphics, website elements, typography, illustrations, infographics, and multimedia assets.
Design eye-catching promotional items, event branding, and seasonal artwork to support city events and campaigns across print and digital platforms. Create captivating motion graphics and animations to elevate the city’s digital storytelling and enhance engagement on social media and other digital channels. Prepare detailed print specifications, oversee quality control, and collaborate with internal and external vendors to ensure exceptional final products. Manage multiple design projects simultaneously, balancing deadlines while maintaining high standards of creativity and accuracy. Maintain and evolve the city’s visual brand identity, ensuring consistency across all communication materials.
Stay current with design trends, technologies, and best practices to continuously enhance the city’s creative output. Provide creative guidance and collaborate with staff across departments to develop visual strategies that support key initiatives and priorities. Demonstrate expert-level proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly After Effects, Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator.
